The best part it when you forget what a roll has on it, and after developing it you revisit that moment in your head and it even brings many feelings attached to it. It is awesome.

Travis, I am currently a digital photographer; however, I am a self-taught and initially got into photography using me father's Argus C3 rangefinder cameras and to be honest, I must say it was the very best thing I could have done from a learning standpoint. After watching your older video on the Leica M3, I think it would be an excellent idea if you included videos talking about the older film cameras, on how to buy one i.e. what to look for from a condition standpoint when you buy an older film camera, what the correct value of the camera is, based on condition, etc. I know I would greatly appreciate these kinds of videos and information. Nice to see you back!

You have inspired me. Pulled my old AE-1 out of a drawer and purchased a 50mm lens from eBay. Just loaded a roll of Fujicolor 400 to test it out. I want to shoot B &W only. Purchased two rolls of ILFORD Delta 400 B & W. Want to develop my own negatives at some point. Great videos.

Hi Travis... Guess what.... I shot my first roll after 10yrs of shooting digital with my Fujifilm and Canon 550D. I had it developed in a lab. Took a week before I get to see what I shot and the amazing thing is this, throughout the week of waiting I amazingly could recall every shot I took and couldn't wait to get them on my hands. Finally I got my negative back, unfortunately out of 31 shots I only got 5 good nice ones hahaha and as you said u truly appreciate those 5 photos way more than the digitals. The other point I wanna say is I find myself loving the rest as well... The imperfection has its beauty too. With a DSLR, we will just delete on the spot, tweak some setting and retake that shot cos technology allows us to but that also takes away the feeling that film gives us that connects the scene with our imagination and the feeling is absolutely different. I will still shoot my digital but yup film is beautiful in its own unique way. Thank you for keeping this channel going. I am going to shoot 2 rolls next week with my F70 hahaha.

Benjamin Lee dude hell yes! 5 keepers still ain’t a bad harvest! And now you have something to strive for! Try to see how many frames on a roll you can make that are worth while. I always tell people. If it’s worth taking one frame. It’s worth taking two! Next time you want to photograph something. Shoot it once. And then change your technique. Your composition. Change something. And shoot a second. Often times that second frame will be the better frame but you’d never know if you are trying to preserve film and just shooting one image of each subject! Let me know how this works for you..

I bought my first ever 35mm slr today with 90 bucks from my local flea market (best find ever!). Perfectly functioning Canon FTbn QL with the 50mm f1.8 and 135mm f3.5 lenses. As also with two old school analog flashes. Best part of this is that i am a complete beginner again, and i have to be down to earth, study and plan carefully what i do when i take the shot. The three things that i, when i shoot with my Nikon d700, sometimes completely forget. And somehow i am more pumped up compared back when i started with digital. It's so much more intimate and physical type of photography. And as far i can say about it after my first 5 shots taken is, that i love it.
This is what my photography needs, this what i need.

At around 5:50 you started talking about the kids in the camp not being able to finish the 10 frames. When i was shooting on digital, i shot anything. Even nonsense. Now on film, I'm more particular about what and when i capture. When I go out with a roll i might end up with only 6 photos. And i only take 1 photo of whatever. No bracketing. No second guessing. Just compose, shoot, and enjoy later.
Also, the look on people's faces when they see me with my Canonet is priceless.

Really nice way of encouraging people; enjoyed your video. I'm at what you called "apprehension" mode, and today experienced my first time developing and my rolls came out completely blank. Granted I'm only at roll 20 (ever), but ironically enough - just before this happened someone offered me the latest/greatest version of my camera, but the digital one. Was so bummed out and took tonight to seek out videos and perspective. This one helped cheer me up. When I thought today, "Maybe I'm in over my head with this shit" then you quoted that photographer "GO IN OVER YOUR HEAD!" hah. Ironic. Cheers from an American in Sweden and thanks again.

I've watched a whole host of your videos. Never considered you elitist, just passionate. I'm a digital shooter who's just getting into film and I haven't been put off at all. I'm finding that film gives me a different kind of buzz than digital- and I really love digital. But then I'm a vintage lens junkie so I guess I was always going to go toward film eventually. My point is that despite loving photography with my Sony, I do GET why you're more passionate about film and I don't think it's at all elitist, film is just more involving and so much more rewarding.

Thanks for another great video. You nailed it! I started out in photography with film back in high school with Fred Flintstone. Later I switched to digital and over time found myself getting caught up in the gear like most people these days and forgetting the skills it takes to be a good photographer by letting the camera figure exposure for me. It may sound crazy, but watching the movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty rekindled my love for film. I still shoot digital sometimes, but I traded in all my big dslr gear for a much smaller digital camera and was fortunate to find a mint condition FM camera. Looks like it was made yesterday. Shooting film does change your perspective on photography. It's not something you can really explain as much as something you need to experience. 99 percent of the uploaded snapshots on the internet are mind numbingly pointless. Saved for the moment, but soon forgotten until the next selfie. I'm sure many will disagree with me, that's ok. Try it before you trash it. God bless you man. Keep 'em coming!

This video is one of your best Travis you've come along way, so called leaders,, let me share something for everyone.... I've shot little film in the past as i didn't know thing about it. I think mostly, Polaroid as it was easy but it always been expensive means i could do much of be young kid.
So when digital camera and mobile came around it made it practical for me to learn photography..
now that i started to use film, with a lot of help you and your channel and all the you tube camera Society/world.
    I've come to this conclusion
the connection that you have the digital camera is different to a film camera
just like your quote on this video, don't shoot what you see shoot what you feel.
that quote has connected all the dots for me.
I'm still quite new to film and learning the ropes.
    But after hearing that quote..
I've worked out something digital cameras are all about shooting what you see, as it can react quite quickly to what you reacting to and what you're seeing, also not hesitating.
but this the opposite when it comes to the film cameras it's all about timing taking your time. Which equals in feeling the shoot. as you do see what you getting after pulling the shutter. I find that the scene gels with you, do you think more about it you give more time in the scene and things happen in front of you because you're holding a film camera strange is happening about three or four times now and I find it quite remarkable.
    keep on adding vids bud

I can’t help feeling that when I take a photo on digital, it doesn’t count, because all you are getting is a file. Yes you can print a digital file but you’re not going to print all of them. With film, you get a negative, which is so important. By doing away with negatives, your photos are no longer safe. Even if I was careful enough to keep digital photos for all of my lifetime, there is little chance they would survive beyond that. Because no one is going to manage my files when I’m gone. You hear of people finding 60 year old negatives in a loft that have just been sitting there. Imagine in 60 years someone finding a hard drive in a loft, chances are it’s not going to work. Film is a way to show future generations how we lived.

    • @ForesthillFilmLab
      @ForesthillFilmLab  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Fonejacker yesssss this exactly realization is what made me switch to film primarily. I have lost thousands of digital files and no negatives. It just began feeling so stupid buying more new cameras that still gave me nothing but a file. I would say it was somewhat of a curse but im glad my thought process changed because now I don’t even feel like I’m doing “more work” I feel like I’m doing what I have to do in order for my photos to be enjoyed by my children later.

    • @teleaddict23
      @teleaddict23 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

ForesthillFilmLab Yes it’s so important you do. The negative is key to film photography, even more so than the print I think, it’s so important to keep them. I found with digital having to keep printing photos so I don’t lose them and then you end up with too many. With film, you can relax a bit, I have my negatives so it’s cool. I just print my favourites. It seems kinda crazy not to have that physical source when digital media is so vulnerable. Computers and hard drives were never designed to keep stuff forever. No one has a word document from windows 95. If it can be deleted, it’s not safe. I feel digital photography is geared towards taking photos for now, film is about taking photos to look at in years to come. Anyway, it’s good to see you back. Great video, hope to see more 👍

Thanks for the video. I think digital spoiled us a bit. I still remember buying my first digital camera, it was a Casio, super tiny and no view finder. The change just felt awesome, then it grew into DSLR etc. etc. I used to have a basic Canon EOS 88 (if I rem correctly) and somehow I made many great pictures with that camera then I ever did with digital. I can only agree with you on this, it is not against digital photography, but it is about appreciating the process and connection. The focus is more on the process and not only the outcome. Its a bit like going for a gym class Vs going for a yoga session. For me it is time to get back to film :)

Actually it is strange, cause a phone can do more damage\harm, than any camera when it comes to privacy. Anyhow...
Most gratifying to me, is to shoot all manual cameras, and use manual lenses.
To me it's is like riding a bike, once you lose the training wheels, it becomes second nature; it feels awesome to create things on your own, cause then it's your thing; anyone else even handling the same camera will take the picture differently ( cause everybody applies their eyes and skills differently).
Even with too much automation, film always looks different as not everyone uses the same film/camera, and or exposure settings; you could say that film has more variation or their own finger print, i like that.
Yes, in principal you can go all manual with any modern camera, but be honest who does that.
I use automation when i need to be quick.

This 'film vs. digital photography' thing is silly..photography is photography whether the images are derived via film vs digital..great images are still basically derived from the photographer taking the image..the 'eye of the photographer' as it were. I love film photography that's what I grew up with, but digital has it's place too when I can take a shot and instantly view it on the LCD screen on my digital camera or download the images to my computer. There's no 'better than the other' to me..each has their place. Really enjoy your equipment reviews and commentary..you're the kind of guy I wouldn't mind as a next door neighbor..could get into a lot of discussions about photography.

Servanov: Its the same in the UK.....they can't legally take your camera / memory card without a warrant (unless you give them permission).

Thanks Travis. Good luck with your new job guy. Your videos were bad for me. You got me to purchase a few film cameras and get back into film...lol.

Street Photography using film is like pissing yourself. Everyone can see you doing it, but only you get the warm feeling it brings.

2:37 "online you come off as an elitist"... Yea sure, the guy in his shed (nice shed!) who shares his knowledge and makes YT videos with a smile... Guessing you can take that away from the videos; However: Taking that away from them shows a little more insight into someone who holds that as an opinion. Sorry, I've seen that type of response much tooooo much not to comment like this.

The police may have taken your camera if you was shooting film.

Yes film photography is great. Recently I do it hobby wise from time to time.
But please don't fantasise that the police can't take a film photography away from you; not once some official at some not so welcoming country wiped my films clean. Exposed to light that is...

Random Acts of Video but. They aren’t printed yet. Your digital photos only exist as a future thought. Your film images exist the moment you develop them.
