- Cremona’s traditional crafts for violinmaking hasn't changed much since 16th century. In the modern time, the locals continue to make great efforts to preserve the culture heritage. International Violinmaking School, University of Pavia, and more than 150 violin workshops and 250 violinmakers safeguard the centuries-old craftsmanship to the future.

While at one time cremona was the epicenter of viola manufacture those artisans did not pass down their secrets so any place in the world is just as good.
The informa and constant information interchange between cremonese violinmakers ( 165 declared ) is a unique feature, that feature makes the city and it's instruments unique.
They didn't say that everyone stopped, only that there were few. Some families have made them for centuries and still do.
