Thank you for giving advice. I agree with your ideas on signing and I am glad I am not alone in this thought process. I started to incorporate my simple signature as part of the painting a few years back and I love that descision every time I look at one of my paintings.
Ahhhh, that makes perfect sense. Which I knew from other marketing campaigns and experience, but what I will need to decide upon, is how I want my signature to LOOK. And then I know it's important to keep it consistent. So put the signature where it won't get covered up by the frame, make it legible, and keep it consistent. Got it. Thanks so much and God bless! But your name was not on the list. 27 other artists are. Will we be able to see you online at the plein air convention and watch your presentation? I sure hope so I’ll be very disappointed to miss you. For some reason I have all the artist names except for you and Kyle Buckman. And I really was looking forward to seeing both of you.
I love signing my name (usually in white) and since my last name ends with the letter Z, I let the bottom part of the letter linger on in a slightly longer horizontal way.
I've been told that signing your paintings with first name , middle name and last name is poor practice . Anything to that ? Thanks for discussing all aspects of painting . And , thanks for referencing Norman Rockwell !
Hard disagree on this one. Respectful hard disagree. This is certainly one way to approach it, but I don't think I'll be convinced that anyone has ever bought a painting or paid more for that painting based on a visible signature. There's likely to be a tag with the artists name, price, name of painting, etc right next to it. And 99.999% of artists will never have enough name recognition to have their signature recognized. If you want to sign your painting this way, go for it. It's yours and your right to make any creative decision you feel is correct. For me, I find the signature will at best do nothing, and at worst detract from the composition that I've worked hard to create. So I sign mine on the back.
I just wanted to let you know, there have been many times I see a painting (not in a gallery with information tags) I like and look for a name so I can check them out the on the internet. If there is no signature on front, I am NOT going to turn the painting over to look - lost chance at recognition.
Every artist believes that somehow they will make it. Your name is your brand just like in music and writing. We buy books based on the person that writes them, we buy records based on the name. I'm sorry that you feel that you need to hide your name on the backside of the painting, Maybe its time you come out of the closet and put your name where artists have done so for hundreds of years, Smack Dab on the front of the painting for the whole world to see. Putting your name on Your painting is telling the world that, This Work of Art, was created by YOU! Even if it ends up in your local thrift shop.
If you don't believe in your own success, what's the point of worrying about composition! That being said, I do agree that sometimes a signature can stand out on a painting. My solution copies from graffiti artists and the golden age illustrators which is to use a custom monogram on front. Occasionally I'll put my full signature the back as well, especially if the painting is a gift. Monograms take up minimal space and are your personal logo. Problem solved!

But you act like your opinions are fact, and that's dangerous for other people who then believe this to be some sort of unassailable truth. I never met John Singer Sargent, I don’t know what he looked like or what kind of person he was but I do know his signature, his brand and love his art. I also know in a museum or gallery I would have great difficulty looking at the back of a painting for a signature.
Interesting. Lately the info I hear is to sign, but not too obvious. Certainly not red! And don't put a date, at least not on the front. Though as you noted, the masters seem to have a date on their work. I suspect, in part, the daye thing is tricky if you're entering shows that indicate work must be within X years. But if a piece is more suited but older then it gets rejected.
My problem with this is when do you think a painting is good enough? Every painting you do will either fail or be better than the last, in your mind. How do you know when this one is good enough to sign? Nope, sign anything your going to into the public for sale. Who knows maybe one day you do become great and those pieces of crap become worth real money.
I understand that after Warhols death, many of his best works were found at his home, unsigned. This created a huge problem. It was also noted that he'd had his employees sign his work as well. 🤦🏻♀️

I am not very good with this technology..so please keep this in mind. I am almost 75. In no way can I afford the art materials, when it comes to the art panels. I am serious. On a very fixed income. I met ROBERT BATEMAN years ago in Canada, by accident in my early 20's, and had not Idea who he was. He happened to catch me sketching in the park that he ended up donating from becoming a parking lot for a housing development. We talked a bit. I mentioned Owen Gromme, whom he knew, or heard of him.. Owen Gromme was also an out wild life Wisconsin Artist, a state I live in. In my very early teens I often would skip school, and it was Owen Gromme who happened to catch me sketching the birds and animals at the Wisconsin Museum. Several times he would catch me after, and not in school. He gave me some art supplies, and taught me some things, which kept me to continue to draw, sketch and paint. But I was very poor, and my mother was not happy ever with what I drew, and found the art supplies, and thought I stole them from somewhere , or from her. After meeting Robert Bateman, and how he told me how people seem to be able to know more about Icons of places and things, majority can not Name more than 5-10 birds, animals, trees, wild flowers. This stood with me... I returned back to USA,, planning to work my way to become a Physical Therapist. However,, ignorant about date rape drugs, I ended up pregnant. Never thinking I would be able to have children after being told due to a kidney disorder , it would be unlikely . Therefore I kept my son..In mean time to make end meet I would sketch peoples pets...However, in no way was I lucky like one on your Talks, Virginia Lago. Many did not want to pay the rest, or they wanted me to give the painting for free. Technology is not like today, and later, majority of ALL my art supplies, painting I did of animals, and birds, and other wild life was gone.. Not sure if my sons father had anything to do with it, angry that I decided to keep our son. With no extra money to recoup my loss, And all the notes on the birds, and animals, I just gave up. Everyone always told me my talent was Gods gift to the wrong person, or that Wildlife Realism was NOT ART, But just being a good Copy. Illustration work. And I heard this before when OWEN GROMME tried to enter his art in the Famous Art Gallery in Milwaukee, and was not accepted, and this is how as a child I seen his display at the Milwaukee Museum. Technology again, so much time art has gone to Modern Art, and then computers came out and people are less and less buying any real art, calendars, Cards as they once did, and companies that still print calendars, have theirs all ready for the next 3-5 years... Therefore I almost gave up...75 still just scrapping by. can not afford a phone, I use to have one, but phone company no longer had the special deal with the land line phones. Cell, no one calls me to pay monthly for. Friends I once had , since passed, or moved on. Guess got tired of inviting, and I had to make some excuse, lie, because I could not afford to spend money, and today everything costs so much. I can not even afford to go to an art gallery, not museum, even the zoo.. But am TRYING,,TRYING to paint all 344 birds that are seen in Wisconsin. Many just Migrate, some are accidental. I live near lake Michigan, and there are a few parks, Sometimes my son and I go to a park his father helped save up in Manitowac, Wi. Even though our son rarely seen his father, my son gave his dad a Robert Bateman book, and I think this is where his dad got the idea to help, being a journalist to save a park near the lake , that was about to be destroyed, almost the same way. My work is on those, now even far more flimsy flat boards. In the past I did use Gesso, but much of my art was done in Egg Tempera. I still have a few that are 45 years old..( wow time flies), and unlike Virginia Lago, when I paint, there has to be a reason, and glad I did not toss. Style, not sure, except there is somewhat a Story,. and it is in the eyes of the animals , and birds I do sketch and paint.........................,,,,I do not really know how to use this Gmail....Janaiart@gmile.com..I am not much of a taker and rarely look at it. Visit a public library, especially Milwaukee library if you can. The librarians there can help you find resources to live more comfortably too.

Several people told me I am wasting my paint on doing realism, it is just illustration work , and with the "AI" advancing, realism art will not be needed, because they can do it far faster, than I can get one painting finished. Right , now Acrylic abstract, spreading over canvas paint colors, to create design is real big right now. Soon it will be like a new TIE DYE on clothing, Bird art is for "GRANNIES" I am not at all cute, with my art. Finishing up today a Wood cock with young, I added some wild plants seen in Fisher Creek, Manitowoc, Wi. and a little frog that pop out in spring . I did not speak with the Librarians. Just some that known to go there. Artist, some are into sewing. The downtown Library that use to be the Museum where I met artist Owen Gromme when very young. I live fine. Use to all my life how to adapt, make do with what I have. At my age not much is needed. I eat healthy, instead of Multi Vitamin, I take B12, D3, E, and a few others not religiously, use Turmeric in some meals. Cinnamon on toast. To take classes at the library , cost money , money I use to feed my cat. Phone use to be cheep, on a budget line. Do not have a phone. I can use my sons phone if needed. But most phone calls he gets in a month are tel marketers. I am not into a lot of chat. Most friends I have had since passed on. Stephen Baumann trying to reach out to artists, much I have learned, but his words of Wisdom, and some touch up tips have been the best of help. Light , changes fast, when doing realism. Few seconds, minute, it is different. Sometimes better than before. One has to be Fast, but can get lost in direction as it appeared. SO , You too must like Stephan Baumann. He has Horses , the breed I fell in love with while visiting Caldonia , Wi , Hose Stable next to Yogie Bear Camp ground with my friend , who had her horse there. I still have my kitten I got from there, about 14 years ago. Many, I can not afford resources. Even to get prints made are costly. I do have Gmail, but rarely go there. I am dyslexic, and hard for me to read printed words. and much that is added in Gmail I do not understand, still new to using the internet. . Trying to complete 100 painting , on 11x14 flat board, WI. Has 344 different birds seen, and to help add strength, I did sand down, and used rust-Oleum flat white Primer, and sand that down again , and use acrylic multi surface. i use egg yolk , additive, Andrew Wyeth used it ,tedious Process. Acrylic changed their formula, and many artist are noticing that their older paintings are starting to chip. Now, I can clear coat my paintings once dried , and go over some areas with oil. My space is Small, so I do not have room for large canvas. And did the 11x14 flat board because told it cost less to make printed copies of. WELL NOW I REALLY MUST GO, Thanks Again. Hope your Art is coming along. Stephan Baumann, has really spent a lot of time to help, and "AI" , really hate to see, people buying up more semi mass produced art. Instead of REAL Human ART. Sounds like you caught alot of flack on this one. Coke and Pepsi sign every can and bottle you know the flavor your after when you buy. The same is true of furniture. Some just grab something and others prefer high-end solid wood and look for the name brand. Sargeant, Monet, and Piccaso are name brands. People go to great lengths to make sure they are getting originals. If signing their finished work was important to them, that's good enough for me!

I never sign at painting until I have received the official Baumann homologation (I had to look that word up) I love the idea of the vignette.

Acrylic changed their formula, and many artist are noticing that their older paintings are starting to chip. Now, I can clear coat my paintings once dried , and go over some areas with oil. My space is Small, so I do not have room for large canvas. And did the 11x14 flat board because told it cost less to make printed copies of. WELL NOW I REALLY MUST GO, Thanks Again. Sounds like you caught alot of flack on this one. Coke and Pepsi sign every can and bottle you know the flavor your after when you buy. The same is true of furniture. Some just grab something and others prefer high-end solid wood and look for the name brand. Sargeant, Monet, and Piccaso are name brands. People go to great lengths to make sure they are getting originals. If signing their finished work was important to them, that's good enough for me!
