As a Romanian, I must say that you can't even begin to imagine what this kid means to us. He's truly a ray of hope, and not JUST because of his amazing achievements (he's the first male swimmer in our country ever to medal at the World Championships), but more so because of his mindset and discourse. He really is our pride and joy!

Calm your tits! It's just swimming chief. Romania is just the way it was. We need economic rays of light. This kid just swims. You've heard too many Nadia, Hagi, Ivan stories. Plus he's a champ at one of the least entertaining sports ever. Kudos to him for the hard work, but champ or not, my life is just the same.

Stop the bullshit, please. As a romanian, i can tell you if David Popovici stops winning, the romanians will start insulting him just like they insult Halep, the football legend Hagi, etc. Ray of hope and mindset my ass lol, our country is full of idiots and we lie ourselves when surprises outta nowhere like Popovic win something. He is a pride to his parents and coaches, no one even cared about Popovic before he won the titles. Stop the bullshit.

@@lolahaur3611 wow dude that's bit harsh...but I can understand what you're saying as I've seen that happening to many heroes who stopped winning (i.e. that butterfly prodigy in Singapore). But hey man as a Chinese I'm moved by Popovic's performance. Beautiful technique, so much potential. True sportsmen are a ray of hope for all humans beyond nationality =D

This is insane! At 17 years old, he is speaking a better English than all Romanian politicians and majority of my entire "Millennials" generation. This young guy should be on the Romanian History Books, as well in the all Mentality Studying books, for such a great mentality and powerful speech at his age. Only when our so called "leaders" are going to understand how important actually Sport is for our health and will start investing within Sport (Strategy, Infrastructure, Projects etc), only by then Romania is going to start doing better. Every single day via Social Media, Internet and TV we are receiving a "World" full of wrong role models like Influencers and Politicians and nothing about Great Doctors or Great Sport Ambassadors like David. This is actually the meaning of a "Role Model" and this is what young generations should take as a role model. Kudos for his Family, Coach and Teachers which were supporting you through your journey. God bless you and keep you healthy, David!

    • @psihopedia
      @psihopedia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

I understand that he underwent a form of bilingual education where English is the 2nd language so it shouldn't be a surprise. Also, young people in Romania tend to use English in general bc Romania is an extremely Western oriented country, with heavy US culture influence. Other than that, I feel he has some skills himself and enjoyed studying English. Maybe he also has friends abroad that gave him the opportunity to encounter native speaking expressions and to assimilate them easily.

We are following the British English Syllabus as it is an official language, considering the fact that US English, as well as Canadian/Australian English are just dialects. Please, don't pretend you know us Romanians, usually you aren't even able to put the finger on the map and show our country, not to say knowing our true history and implicitly our overall mentality. BRETT. Fantastic interview. I wish your podcast had more recognition. You having been an extremely successful swimmer and knowing the world of swimming just takes these interviews to another level. You know how to talk to these athletes and ask them the right questions always resulting in a fantastic interaction. Thank you for your work, it doesn’t go unnoticed. I am a former swimmer and just sports fan in general and I always find myself coming to your podcast and leave feeling inspired by these hardworking athletes. Btw the way this young man Carry’s himself and articulates his words is equally wonderful as his swimming.

It's great to see David in an interview with someone who knows swimming. Back in Romania we got a bunch of segments talking about David but no one knew anything about the sport itself. I would've liked to drill him more about the 100m final, what that fist to the water meant right after, before he knew the result, if it was disappointment or relief that despite the fatigue he managed to stay in it. I'd just love to know more about what happpens in the mind of an athlete in a moment like that.
He're hoping he achieves something amazing in Otopeni in a couple of weeks and he is "forced" to make the media tour again, haha!
    Thanks a lot Brett!

The 100 WR is definitely going to go down sooner than the 200 because there are 4 guys who have gone 47.1 or better now and all of them are young and capable of breaking 47, and Caeleb is already there and just a millimeter away from that WR mark. Nobody has even been in the same universe of the 200 WR until now, and young David still has a long way to go on that WR. Tom, Duncan, and Sunwoo are also there, but they are still all over 2 seconds away. I do think David has a great chance of breaking it though, he's so young and has his whole career ahead of him.

As a romanian ,i cant tell this:
-Romania doesn't have any olimpic swiming pool after 1989
-Romania didn't give a penny for David's training
-All romanian politicians make pictures with David after his performance to speculate David's succes
-Romania after 1989 doesn't deserve David Popovici !

@@m.dewylde5287 My nickname look like an english speaker? Do you see latin alphabet in my nickname? Do you speak and write russian language perfectly?

Finally, a great Romanian athlete who can speak English with no accent or just very little. I’m guessing David didn’t studied in Romania.
    Felicitari tinere!
