@@HowToLinebacker one thing I have been wondering about a lot when I‘m watching guys like bobby wagner or roquan smith is this: do they not have assigned gaps or are they playing some defense that I never heard of before. Bc often they just end up making the tackle in the backfield, while other gaps are still wide open. (It Tend to happens a lot on OZ/Stretch plays.) It seems as if they just abandon their gap, but run to the opening where RB is going to. Maybe you have an explanation for that 👍🏻

Often when you see a tfl (tackle for loss) from a lb it’s because he IS assigned a very specific gap and he decides he has an opportunity for a “run through” without having to deal with a blocker. Certainly there are other ways to get a tfl but it is especially prevalent on outside zone plays where the offensive line can get “strung out” with a lot of space between individual o-linemen.
