First: lifesaver love the detailed Barney explanation. Second: there is no way you can tell me they put that battery there for any reason other than to make you go to a ford dealership to get it replaced.
I have to change the battery on my grandparents escape, this should be the first video on this topic. Everyone else is taking apart the entire car. This is so much more simple!
Personal preference, I prefer removing the wipers and cowl. It takes about the same time and there isn't the risk of breaking the MIDI fuses that are connected to the wiring harness you have to move, which causes a no-start condition.
I was thinking the same thing. Saw that the front of the battery box comes off, and then when I started watching videos all these people are taking the battery out of the top, and half the car with it. Now, it’s still that it is this hard, but not as bad as what some are making it. Still not looking forward to this though.
The Guys at AutoZone refused to help my daughter replace her battery. She brought it to me, we watched your video and had the battery replaced in no time. Thank you for the great instructional video.
I worked with this guy at Johnson Controls in Milwaukee.....now Clarios. He was always shooting videos in the vehicle bay. Now I know what he was doing!
I watched about 15 videos and came across yours and was inspired to go down and put the battery in my car by myself. You are amazing! Thank you so much! I'm so proud of myself that I did it!
This video was most helpful. I had to deal with this when my battery unexpectedly died this weekend. I usually have the guys at the auto parts store replace batteries but this time I had to deal with it. Fortunately, I am somewhat handy. That said, you should never have needed to make this video!!!! The designers of this car should be ashamed of themselves for putting the battery in such a hard to get to place that requires engine parts to be removed. Anyone should be able to look at a car battery and be able to replace it in just a few minutes without removing anything beyond the tie down.
hi, did the escape lose all computer settings or something like that after changing the battery?, i am a bit afraid to do it my self, you know some cars need to be reprogramed after this
@@JusunGuitar it did not since my bluetooth automatically reconnected. That fixes time and date. Did need to re install radio preferences but thats about it. After install you can press fog light 5 times and hazard light 4 times to reset battery. Not sure what it does tho. Battery sign should go on and off a few times in dash.
Exactly what I needed. I was a little pissed off that I needed an ASE certification to replace the battery on this thing but it really wasn't that bad. Gave me a chance to clean out debris from that portion of the bay and change the filter while I was at it. A ratcheting 10mm battery terminal wrench and some long ratchet extensions made this job much easier. Great video! 👍
Great video. I am very thankful that you've made this available and taken the time to put together a well-thought-out video. On Ford's next Escape model, maybe they'll design it so you will need to consider taking it in to the service department to fill up with gas.
So true! I needed that laugh! Recently learned that I can’t check the transmission fluid in my 2018 Escape because of the placement, and now, trying to install a new battery since Auto Zone won’t touch it. I personally won’t ever find out what the next design will be, this car has been a nightmare! Awesome video Mr. Battery!
Your Amazing! I have never changed a car battery before and until this car. Walmart wouldn't do it even though they advertise "buy a car battery from us and will install it for free" I got home and watched 3 videos til I saw this one. The way you talk and step by step. Then you even put it back! You're a lifesaver and made me excited to do it myself! Thank you for the best share!!
I'm glad to see a method that doesn't require taking the wiper arms off and the cowl panels! The front of the battery box even comes off- not so bad. Good presentation.
This is a GREAT video. Two additional suggestions: First, when you pull the battery forward, the shoulder on the bottom of the battery tray keeps the battery from sliding out. A small pry bar under the battery allowed it to slide all the way forward. Once I got the negative cable loose and out (I unplugged the sensor wire to the negative cable block.) Second: After running the negative cable end through the bench wire brush, I reassembled per the video. Just as I was about to reconnect the negative cable to the firewall, I saw I forgot to reinstall the negative cable end sensor that should have been plugged in BEFORE reassembling the battery top bracket. After 20 minutes of trying to fish the cable back to the back, I took a break. When I returned, I removed the battery hold down bracket, which then allowed me to get my hand in there. Upon further inspection, I had been trying to push the connector on backwards! I rotated it 180 degrees and it snapped right on!! Great repair, poor Ford design. Thanks for this professional video. The factory manual is usually a bit more reliable than all of the DIY remedies!
I was pretty pissed off when I learned where the battery is located in mine, but this video made a replacement look quite easy. Thank you so much! This could stop anyone from taking theirs to their Ford dealership.
I gotta tell you, we followed this video step by step this morning on my Mom's 2013 Escape. You were spot on. There was some weird clip stuff and some other stuff as always that you won't learn until you do it. Stripes earned. Ty for this video. Saved us a ton of time today.
I can’t believe a shop near me wants to charge $400 for parts and labor to do this. My daughter in law told me that’s how much they wanted. I am an aircraft mechanic so she asked me if I’d do it. $170 for the battery before discount. 1/2 an hour of work. Thanks for the video. It always helps to watch another experience mechanic do the job before going out there to reinvent the wheel.
My son and I did his 2014 Ford Escape battery replacement a few days ago. I am very handy and have many tools and enjoy working on vehicles, appliance repairs, etc. let me tell you straight, this is not a job for 2/3 of DIYers. The video is excellent but really doesn’t show the difficulty in accessing various nuts, bolts, etc that need to be removed. First off, you need a 13 mm deep socket for removing neutral cable on firewall, thankfully a 9/16” worked asI didn’t have a deep 13 mm socket with me at his garage. Even removing the 8 mm battery tie down holder is time consuming but a ratchet wrench worked fine. The air filter box removal is a struggle, lots of strength needed to unseat the bottom pins as everything is so tight. We got it done but count on 90-120 minutes from start to finish. It was 0C or 32F here. On reviewing the windshield wiper and cowling removal alternative method, I think I would use that procedure next time as long as you are careful with wiper removal and indexing location of wiper position. I can certainly see why a dealer would charge 1-2 hours for this as there is no quick way following factory method as shown. Autozone and others are wise to refuse to do a free battery swap on these Ford Escapes. Way too much time as well as risk of breaking something.
Great video. This method is by far the better method than the video which shows taking off the wipers, engine cover/rain shield pan etc.. When I first bought the 2013 Escape the battery failed after four years and I said no problem and started. Well, I started just like your video but I got to a point where the battery tray would not come out. Well, you went through the steps and lifted out the battery tray. Well, it doesn't lift out as easily as it looked when you did it. Finally, I realized that two grommets (?) have to be somewhat yanked out. Then, after that tug, yank, or strongarm pull, it worked just like you said. The other difficult part, as least for a 1st timer, was getting the air inlet from the front of the car to the air filter removed. After some study it wasn't nearly as hard as I was making it. Now I've done it, I could do it in about 20 minutes tops. Thanks for the video. I'm am most pleased with myself. And you!
Thanks!!!!!!! Great video. I spent a lot of time trying to get the wiper arms off because a lot of videos show replacing the battery that way. Remove the arms, then the plastic cowling. Ugh!! I am so glad I found this video. It took me an hour and a half to do the job this way. Had no problems. Cannot thank you enough. What a stupid place to put a battery.
This is much easier way of doing it than the first time I did it. (This video you shared, is actually the way the dealership does it) The first time I did this, I found some DIY video which shows removing the wiper blades, the black trey/clips and unscrewing the break fluid tank, in order to access the battery. It worked, but took for ever to take apart and put back together. Thanks for sharing this.
As im sitting here at the Ford dealership, I looked up this video to find out how long this takes. Been waiting two hours already. Just rediculous. Thanks much for the info!
Thank you! as others have said skip those videos of people removing windshield wipers and the cowl. This way is the most painless. The battery under the cowl is a safety feature as much as I dont like it it was engineered to keep me safe.
It's less about safety and more about inconvenience so that you have to take it to the dealership to have work done. They're not stupid, they want to keep taking your money for the life of the car.
My daughters 2017 may have had the original Ford battery in it. I've heard of stock batteries lasting 7 years but never an after market. I cut the end out of the hole on the left of the battery strap so that hard to reach nut don't have to come all the way off to get the strap out. And zip tied the harness back in as opposed to fooling with those aggravating push in harness fasteners. Those were way too hard to get out on her car. Lot of unnecessary stress on the wires. I won't have to fool with that again. Thanks for sharing! I've never seen a car where a video was needed to change the battery! Use to a crescent wrench would do in a pinch but even then I preferred to use the correct wrench.
Thank you for making this video. There are so many saying to remove the wipers and the cowling, and they call that the "easy way"! I knew there must be a way to do it without all that work, so thank you
Based on my experience with my 2014 I would avoid this method like the plague. It was really tough an I just couldn’t finish and replacing the air box was a huge drag. Luckily I tried the removing the windshield wipers method and it was really easy. Success at last.
One of the best video presentations on TH-cam. Thank you. That said, the engineers at Ford designing this setup have the heads buried up their tail pipes so far, they don't realize they are professional shysters. There is zero excuse for such a design that requires this much effort to replace a simple battery. Shame on the engineers, shame on Ford. I've owned a few Fords in my life, but after owning a 2007 Ford F250 Lariat and a 2015 Ford Escape, I will never again have one of these "wrecks on wheels" adorning my driveway. The epitome of not American ingenuity, but of American stupidity.
Glad I found this video 1st! Though minimal auto mechanic knowledge, I will get hands dirty and completed job in just over an hour! Thank you for your video!
This is good if you have the right tools. But for my 2018 Ford Escape it was better taking off windshield wipers and cover. It was easier to get to the battery.
The lower half of the air filter box/plenum on my 2014 Titanium did not just lift out, it needed some persuasion to have the feet that slip into grommets underneath it release their (6) year old grip. Beyond that it is a great video that really assists the DIY kinda person to get through this chore.
This is the best explanation and method for changing this battery! I save so much time and a headache by finding this video. Others channels had much more work involved with the same result. You've earned a subscriber and a like. Thank you
My 2015 Escape was a bit different. The temperature sensor housing has a second intake tube that blocks the forward screw. However, that second tube snaps out and then you can remove the forward screw. You might notice too that he never explicitly says to move the brake fluid reservoir, but sometimes in the video its in place while other times it has been moved. Mine was in way, so it probably does need to be moved. The next problem is that although you can remove the air filter housing with the intake hose and temperature sensor housing in place, you can't see to reinstall it. There are small hoses that have to be moved out of the way to seat the air filter rear attachment into the rubber socket. You'll have to remove the intake hose and sensor housing to see what you're doing. Also, he didn't show how incredibly finicky the air filter cover is. Some mechanics will try to force it down and strip out the plastic screw beds. But, overall, the video was quite helpful. 👍
You sir are a saint. I have no automotive experience or skills, watched this video and 20 minutes later, my battery is in. Officially my favorite old white guy in a lab coat, sorry Bill Nye.
Howdies TBS. Well doggies. Using your video and others...(I'm challenged) I finally got the 2017 back together. And it started. That's good. Gonna give it a test ride afterwhile. Yesterday when the thing folded in the yard when it was supposed to be taking us to church, after watching the vids it was a no brainer. I figgered...Let the shop haul if off. My dismay began that morning when lifting the hood I could NOT even find the battery. Then around 3AM this morning after getting up at 2AM to have another go with the vids and picking out my battery I said to heck with it. Slept like a baby until 7AM. I will say it took me about 3x longer than it took you (There was that *one* little bolt that gave me cat fits) and I can't see it taking much less time next time. Grrr! But there is absolutely NO way in heck that I could have replaced that battery without your help. I'm here to say thankee 50 times! Another satisfied customer! Your bestest fan in Alabam, Norm
this is the best site for clear tutorials on this nightmare stuff. wait till u get one where terminal posts and terminal ends dont free up due to corrosion etc. whats the going labor time an hour plus ? thx again !!!
Use the firewall mount for the negative clamp instead of the battery clamp/post .... HOPEFULLY the negative terminal/battery clamp interface isn't corroded and it should work.
Heads up to anyone with the same year escape but the engine layout is different... The cowel removal method is the best way, or maybe even the only way, because the components needing to be removed didn't seem like they'd allow access to the battery anyway. It honestly wasn't that bad as everything was easy to take off and put back on
My ford escape had clips on the filter box. Also my filter was square. Their was no bolts holding it down but those self tapping clips. Just pull on the box and they will become free. Everything else is correct. Did it today. Removed it in 45 minutes. Installed in 15.
How is this the only correct method of battery replace for this vehicle on TH-cam. I've watched more than half a dozen guys tear their cars apart trying to do this incorrectly.
Wow, great video! Two comments - I was doing this on my in-laws 2014 Escape so I wanted to put all the parts back properly. It took me probably 45 minutes to get the BACK side of the battery cover on and I'm still not sure it's engaged properly. The video shows putting on the front of the cover and the battery I was replacing was installed by the local dealer so I'm not sure that the back of the cover was ever on correctly after the dealer had done the install about 4 years ago. Both parts of the batter cover were just loose and laying on top of the battery. Why isn't the back of the battery cover installed permanently at the factory so the front would just clip into it? Much of this is done by feel since you can't see it while working with your hands underneath the cowling. Second - make sure the battery is shoved all the way back in the battery box before you put the front of the box back on or you won't be able to get the front of the box engaged (I learned this the hard way). I didn't bother to check the owner's manual on how to replace the battery and this video was great!!! I once had a GMC Acadia and the owner's manual didn't even tell you where the battery is (it's under the back seat in the floor). C'mon American car manufacturers, you can do better than this!!! Because of nonsence like this, I will never buy a GMC or a Ford again (don't get me going on the cabin air filter for this car). But, great video! It took me about 2 hours total to do this job, taking my time and playing with the battery cover for about 45 minutes.
You didn't mention resetting the charging system. I'm reading we must do this after installation of a new battery. Do you do this? Is there a video for it? Thanks so much
Very helpful. More complete than any other I watched. A closeup of the airtubes on the housing would help. They had to come off on the 2014 to get on air housing screw undone.
Hi - Thanks for watching! According to our current information there is no battery reset as the battery control system will do the reset automatically on this vehicle.
Look at the battery replacement for a 2014 ford escape. You either remove the whole airbox or the wiper cowl if you want to get it out. This is all designed this way to drive customers to dealers for service
Seems to be a lot of ambient current flow causing a spark when you disconnect/ reconnect the negative wire to the frame. My daughters battery lasted 9 years in her 2014 Escape.
Wow. Cleanest video i have ever seen to change escape battery!!! I wish i could do it like that. One and final question. What was the trim level on this Escape!!
My project is trying to disconnect the negative battery cable in order to "reset" the transmission scheme. Will disconnecting the battery neg / ground where it is bolted to the firewall enough to clear out & "reset" the transmission scheme memory settings, or will the cable connected at the negative battery post need to be disconnected too?
First: lifesaver love the detailed Barney explanation. Second: there is no way you can tell me they put that battery there for any reason other than to make you go to a ford dealership to get it replaced.
Hi - Thanks for watching and sharing your opinion!
Lol just getting ready to replace the battery in my wife's car and this is my exact thought
Exactly!!
Just went to replace mine. Glad I’m not alone
You said it!!!
I have to change the battery on my grandparents escape, this should be the first video on this topic. Everyone else is taking apart the entire car. This is so much more simple!
Agreed. That's what the dealer tells you they have to do. THIS process is what they actually do. Great video.

Ford moved the battery on the 2020 and newer Escapes out in the open of the engine bay.
Good to know they're no longer concerned about things like crash protection, weight transfer, things like that... 🤔

You think that's bad. Check our the Buick SUV-s
You should have seen Harley V-Rod. This is a bloody artwork of hiding the goddamn thing.
Much easier than removing the cowling, THANK YOU for this video!!!
Finally someone that knows the right way to do this. Thank you for proving my point
Thanks . Direct and to the point. Much better than many repair video's

It cracks me up how he says replacement is straightforward. It's anything but that. It's well over an hour to do, and I'd done it before.
Hi - Thank you for watching and sharing your experience.
Thank you so much dude. This helped so much. Glad I didn't have to remove the windshield wipers.
2013 ford escape:just changed battery following your video, all went smooth, thanks for your video👍

Thanks for the video. As many have said this was really well explained. Still a huge pain to remove but got it done in about an hour.

Thank you sir this video gets straight to the point and it's way easier than removing the wipers and big covers.i appreciate you making this video .
Thank you for the very valuable feedback!
Thank you for making this video. There are so many saying to remove the wipers and the cowling, and they call that the "easy way"! I knew there must be a way to do it without all that work, so thank you
Thank you for watching and glad you found this helpful.
So i have to take the whole car apart to replace the battery , great job Ford.
so truuuuuuuu...its nuts
I think they started with the battery and built the vehicle around it!
Because you know, 45 minutes every 5 years is sooooo hard . . .
@@mojognome thata not the point it take 10 mins in any other car i had
@@mojognome5 years? Bruh here in Texas a battery maybe lasts 2 years. 5 years in perfect weather with minimum driving, sure
Thank you very much, I started taking the cowl, stopped, then I watched your video. It is much easier to take off following your instructions.
I looked at the cowl, and thought: "There has to be a better way!"
Glad this video exists!
Great Video and thank you. This was far less painful than some of the other videos made it look. Thanks again very well put together video.
@@TheBatteryShop you are very welcome, videos like this are the main reason youtube is around despite the fact stupid stuff has billions of views
Based on my experience with my 2014 I would avoid this method like the plague. It was really tough an I just couldn’t finish and replacing the air box was a huge drag. Luckily I tried the removing the windshield wipers method and it was really easy. Success at last.
Hi - Thanks for watching! We used the vehicle manufacturer's procedure, but thanks for sharing your experience.
Perfect video! Shows everything and is very detailed! Hate tutorial videos that don’t show everything. GREAT VIDEO!!
Hi - Thanks for watching!
Such a great teaching video! I did my last one via removing the cowl! This was definitely faster!
Hi - Thanks for watching and sharing your experience!
although i did get to the battery via removing the wipers and all that, i really appreciated the step by step on doing the battery replacement 👍
Hi - Thanks for watching and sharing your opinion!
Glad I found this video 1st! Though minimal auto mechanic knowledge, I will get hands dirty and completed job in just over an hour! Thank you for your video!
Hi - You're welcome and thanks for watching!
This is good if you have the right tools. But for my 2018 Ford Escape it was better taking off windshield wipers and cover. It was easier to get to the battery.
This worked for me. Thanks! Be sure to have a deep 13mm socket. And careful with those wires attached to the negative post.
Thanks for watching, providing your feedback and adding to the conversation.
The lower half of the air filter box/plenum on my 2014 Titanium did not just lift out, it needed some persuasion to have the feet that slip into grommets underneath it release their (6) year old grip. Beyond that it is a great video that really assists the DIY kinda person to get through this chore.
Hi - Thanks for watching and sharing your experience!
This is the best explanation and method for changing this battery! I save so much time and a headache by finding this video. Others channels had much more work involved with the same result. You've earned a subscriber and a like. Thank you
Hi - You're welcome and thanks for watching!
Absolutely the best video on this anywhere!! Thank You!!
Hi - You're welcome and thanks for watching!
Awe the infamous 10mm the one socket the whole world is always looking for. 🤗
Hi - Thanks for watching! Yup, that's the one.
We're so glad you found the video helpful!
The best instructions ever. Thank you!
Hi - You're welcome and thanks for watching!
You sir are a saint. I have no automotive experience or skills, watched this video and 20 minutes later, my battery is in. Officially my favorite old white guy in a lab coat, sorry Bill Nye.
Thank you for watching and glad we could help you out!
Awesome video thanks
We're glad you enjoyed this!
I had the misfortune of changing one of these. The video helped a lot.
Hi - Thanks for watching! We're glad the video helped.
Straight to the point.
Now I'll try to do it, hopefully I'll be as simple as you did.
Thank you, for the great video.
Hi - You're welcome and thanks for watching!
Your bestest fan in Alabam,
Norm

@@TheBatteryShop The Ford Escape is all fun and games until the battery goes poof. You ARE the man! Running like race car!
Thank you for mentioning the torque values! Great video!
Hi - You're welcome and thanks for watching!
Best method for the job. It save me lots of time.
Hi - Thanks for watching and sharing your experience!
this is the best site for clear tutorials on this nightmare stuff. wait till u get one where terminal posts and terminal ends dont free up due to corrosion etc. whats the going labor time an hour plus ? thx again !!!
This is a wonderfully fun car to jump start.
Use the firewall mount for the negative clamp instead of the battery clamp/post .... HOPEFULLY the negative terminal/battery clamp interface isn't corroded and it should work.
This is the right way to do it. It does not involve the cowling removal and a potential recalibration of the windshield wipers.
Thank you so much for your feedback!
this is still very helpful as of today! thank you
Thanks for watching and glad to hear we could help!
Heads up to anyone with the same year escape but the engine layout is different...
The cowel removal method is the best way, or maybe even the only way, because the components needing to be removed didn't seem like they'd allow access to the battery anyway.
It honestly wasn't that bad as everything was easy to take off and put back on
Thanks for watching and for sharing your feedback.
Great video man. Helped me out after days of procrastinating and thinking I’d have to remove the wiper and stuff
Great to hear and thanks for watching!
My ford escape had clips on the filter box. Also my filter was square. Their was no bolts holding it down but those self tapping clips. Just pull on the box and they will become free. Everything else is correct. Did it today. Removed it in 45 minutes. Installed in 15.
Hi - Thanks for watching and sharing your experience!
I start at the wiper removal and cowl removal.. This seems to be an easier solution for me. There are videos for this procedure on line.
Hi - Thanks for watching and sharing your experience!
This helped me a lot, thank you!
Yay! We are happy to help!
How is this the only correct method of battery replace for this vehicle on TH-cam. I've watched more than half a dozen guys tear their cars apart trying to do this incorrectly.
Thanks for watching and for your feedback!
Thank you for watching and adding to the conversation!
Very helpful. I couldnt reach negative terminal to test it with my multimeter, needless to say i didnt need to take it out the battery
We're so glad you found this helpful! Good thing you didn't need to take out your battery
Thank you with the help super easy to fallow and and not complicated like other videos you Dona fantastic job
Hi - You're welcome and thanks for watching!
The best video I've seen on this issue
You didn't mention resetting the charging system. I'm reading we must do this after installation of a new battery. Do you do this? Is there a video for it? Thanks so much
Very helpful. More complete than any other I watched. A closeup of the airtubes on the housing would help. They had to come off on the 2014 to get on air housing screw undone.
This is the best way to change this battery on your Ford Escape.

Is there a battery reset procedure for the PCM?
Hi - Thanks for watching! According to our current information there is no battery reset as the battery control system will do the reset automatically on this vehicle.
Look at the battery replacement for a 2014 ford escape. You either remove the whole airbox or the wiper cowl if you want to get it out. This is all designed this way to drive customers to dealers for service

Sure was a lot easier on my 60 Chevy Biscayne,
Agree. Those old cars were a lot easier to work on but they were also rolling death traps then too.
This was a very helpful video and I needed this today. Thank you.
Hi - You're welcome and thanks for watching!
Seems to be a lot of ambient current flow causing a spark when you disconnect/ reconnect the negative wire to the frame. My daughters battery lasted 9 years in her 2014 Escape.
Hi - Thanks for watching! Thanks for sharing your experience. The spark can occur when a Memory Saver is being used.
Thanks, very much. very very helpful.
Hi - You're welcome and thanks for watching!
Top notch! Thank you so much!
You're welcome! We're so happy to assist!
Wow. Cleanest video i have ever seen to change escape battery!!! I wish i could do it like that.
One and final question. What was the trim level on this Escape!!
Hi - Thanks for watching! We're glad you like the video, but we don't remember what the trim level was as this video was done quite some time ago.
Thank you for watching. We would recommend consulting your mechanic or dealer for proper resolution.
That guy was awesome. Not a single F-word!
