Splat “ wow everything seems to run off mana” Also splat after not hooking up the gate to mana“ the gate doesn’t seem to be working, it must be bugged or something”
What got me onto this game was the art style. I know that sounds weird, but I have a handful of games where I just appreciate the work that went in, even if it is not "perfect" or realistic. The Mech and steampunk vibe really drew me in.
The art style / aesthetics are a huge part of a game. It's what's kept me from playing Rimworld and 'cute-sy' looking games. I just can't get into the vibe. And I have a (perhaps unfair) inkling that the twee transfers into the game-play as well.
Really recommend checking out their other games, driftlands the magic revival is like majesty to a certain extent. This game appears to be set in the same setting.
seems like everything needs the mana connections. i would hope they have an AOE mana tower in later tech always making the pipes could get annoying depending how big a base gets
@Splattercatgaming You didn't mention it in the video, so I don't know if you're aware, but this game is set in the world of Driftlands, the studio's previous game (that's why all the islands are floating in the sky, and the "surface" is a fiery hellscape)
Love the opening cinematic but it also made me think it was going to launch into Dwarf Merge, the new hit mobile game. Travel from floating island to floating island by merging the environment. Now with a free boost pack valued at $250 with your first purchase of extra energy! 😂
Dude, the Gate is a powered structure. It needs Mana to open & close - as evidenced by the fact that it had the little symbol for Mana Consumption above it. Also, I'd have taken the time pre-connecting the Nav Beacon to put up a small defensive post around it. A few Guard towers, maybe a Balloon Tower or two for indirect damage, & some walls with its own gate. That would've been nice.
Liking what I see. This differs from its predecessor Driftland: the Magic Revival. Driftland's gameplay resembles Majesty gameplay a lot, although the island floating mechanic certainly creates an unique feel. First Dwarf looks like a interesting combination of gameplay mechanics as well.
Saw the trailer for this last night and knew Splat would be covering it... but I wasn't expecting to wake up to a video! Now that's a great way to start the day.
It's a neat demo. I like the art and overall gameplay. I've only found a couple things that were incorrect. First is sometimes when the enemy portals open there is a weird purple ball of something that will come across the map that you can't hit and does nothing to buildings. After a few seconds it will sink into the ground. The rain absolutely tanks fps like 119 to 35. Also when you speak to Chief mom and get the prompt to go to "an another" island. That said it's short but sweet if they tighten up structure building and keep building on what they've done so far it should be a banger.
I got a somewhat positive impression on the game at first. I liked the animated cinematic, the construction looked like a fairly good fantasy base builder game. But being able to control the dragon looks awesome!
You had me at "dwarf." I'm not a huge survival/crafting game fan, but dwarves just make everything better. For an early demo it definitely shows some promise.
First thing I thought seeing the intro was 'nice, Malakai Makaisson getting his own game'. But the it reminded me of that game Splat played (insert amount time here) ago, where he had that Combat Mech turned Agri Mech and had to clean the nature by squirting water about.
Looks pretty sweet and playing as a dragon is always a solid hook for me. The build interface looks clunky af though. Hopefully it's one of the things they're working on.
For some reason hopping in a giant mech deforesting half the countryside suddenly reminded me of Ferngully. You're basically walking around in the combination forester/sawmill from that movie.
The opening animation was awesome. But the problem is it looks more awesome than that opening scene in the game by far. The colors are insanely vibrant, the main character is wearing a bright red coat, his beard is luxurious and bright orange, the dragon is a bright green with contrasting yellow.... the animations for the dragon and dwarf are also somehow smoother than the 3d versions in the game. By contrast, the actual game is muted, brown, dull green, the MC wears a muted cyan instead of red, his beard is brown instead of bright orange, the dragon is dark green and brown instead of bright green and yellow, and the animations for the MC and the dragon don't really sync up to the sound or the voice over. If we had leapt into the game without the animation, it would be fine honestly. The game looks good, but that is a big oof being forced to compare the two immediately upon the start. That's like being a local soft rock band and Meshuggah is opening for your act.
Hey Splat! I wanted to bring your attention to the game Cursed Crew, it is a FTL-ish game made by creator(s) of the fantastic Rimworld Vanilla Expanded mod series
"I didn't even know I was going to have colonists" dude why did you think you were building houses also did you bother listening to ANY of the dialogue? Like half of it was talking about bringing in more settlers.
First time watching a splattercat video? The dude's got the attention span of a kitten. He's a very good indicator for how idiot proof a game is though.
I see Splat not placing a defense tower on every possible square along the wall: "First time?" Also, they need different voice actors. Dwarf sounds... OK-ish, just needs a bit more gruff, but Dragon is Chris Pratt levels of voice acting.
Much like how Timberborn has nothing that makes it inherently about beavers; there is nothing in this game that is inherently dwarvish. It feels forced in because they had to give it some sort of flavor; but you could just have easily been any type of person. In fact, it feels like it originally had more of a Viking theme going on that they switched to dwarves at some point.
Was it me or was there a couple of seconds in this video where there was dead air? I thought I could hear Splat typing with nothing happening on screen... (24:03 - 24:35)
Comparing the game to Riftbreaker is pretty high praise. I love that game, there isn’t a whole lot of games on the market like it or have that level of polish.
Splat “ wow everything seems to run off mana”
Also splat after not hooking up the gate to mana“ the gate doesn’t seem to be working, it must be bugged or something”
So I get a mech, a dragon companion, and ravens in an open world of flying islands I can craft on? Sign me up!
This looks like a 3rd person, medieval Riftbreaker and I'm here for it.
these were my exact thoughts, I even looked up Riftbreaker to see if they were the same studio.
I love Riftbreaker and wish there were more games like it. Struggle to find anything that hits the same.
What got me onto this game was the art style. I know that sounds weird, but I have a handful of games where I just appreciate the work that went in, even if it is not "perfect" or realistic. The Mech and steampunk vibe really drew me in.
Doesn't sound weird at all.
The art style / aesthetics are a huge part of a game. It's what's kept me from playing Rimworld and 'cute-sy' looking games. I just can't get into the vibe. And I have a (perhaps unfair) inkling that the twee transfers into the game-play as well.

I think the gate needs mana too.
love splat but god does he misses stuff right in his face lol
oh it does, big obvious mana symbol over the gate. apparently not obvious enough... lol
Dude i was literally screaming that at my monitor

That opening art has a Heavy Metal movie vibe from the 80s
It was pretty solid. I did enjoy the dog taking shelter in masters' beard.
I thought the same exact thing!
So... the navigation stone us the Loknar?
It's all good, I've got an... angle.
24:02 - 24:35 someone missed silence and inactivity in the editing.
Naw we were supposed to have a moment of silence for the fallen homies 😅😂
It's a nice reality moment.
Yeah he usually gets that lol even earlier in the video there’s a noticeable cut
I knew something was wrong as Splattercat never stops talking for a second. It was irritating... the silence... so creepy.
who cares dude... what a waste of a comment.
@Splattercatgaming You didn't mention it in the video, so I don't know if you're aware, but this game is set in the world of Driftlands, the studio's previous game (that's why all the islands are floating in the sky, and the "surface" is a fiery hellscape)
"Post Apocalyptic" is definitely 2 words Splatter Cat needs to say out loud at least once everyday otherwise he dies lol
Clap if you believe
That and "Tarkov".
how come no one ever makes Pre Apocalyptic games?
@@Patashu I think those are just City Builders :p
Also need to say "things of that nature" or "whatnot" in the first 5 minutes of every video 😂
Cool looking game, added it to my wishlist. Glad to see I was not the only one yelling "Power the gate!!" lol
A Dwarf without a Scottish Accent?..... Unthinkable!
Yeah, pass…
American Dwarves!!! WTF 😂.
tbf they have a lot of accents but this one is just none of them so meh, the dragon too just sounds too normal
Will accept Scouse (Liverpool, UK) after watching 'Soul Music'.
Bleaugh! Shave my beard and call me a gnone those voices are awful
That menu screen gives me strong Warcraft 3 menu screen vibes. I like it.
Fern Gully? I have not heard that name in many a moon, thanks for unlocking a childhood memory splatty2catty!
That intro was dope. I want a dragon companion and a mech too! XD
And we don't talk about the mana symbol on the gate. x)
Thanks for showcasing. ^^

Game where you do survival crafting on a big ass mech? First six minutes and I'm already sold.
I could binge watch this
Man, I love games like this.
That intro cinematic is so good!
If you don't Rock and Stone, you ain't comin' home!
Did I hear a rock and stone?

whoa, this already seems in a great state! That`ll get on my "must try" -List! thanks for covering this :)
This game looks awesome! Thanks for showcasing it!
Seems like an awesome game, thanks for introducing it
This looks awesome. got into the playtest IMMEDIATELY. Thanks Splat.
Stand by for Dwarvenfall.
I like this first dwarf. I am looking forward to seeing second and even third dwarf as well.😁
looks cool, but... above ground dwarves?! no striking of the earth?? how are we to get the shiny and sparkly stuff?
thanks, dwarves are kinda my thing.
WORK IN PROGRESS: But... Please please please have an option to turn off screen shake.
Rock and stone brother! Do another one on this. this looks fucking fun.
Awesome Game! Thanks for the heads up, will definitely wishlist it.
OOOOH! This actualy looks kinda SICK!! Its now on my wishlist!! It kinda got all the elements I like xD
We do love our dwarves here
I got a somewhat positive impression on the game at first. I liked the animated cinematic, the construction looked like a fairly good fantasy base builder game. But being able to control the dragon looks awesome!
@23:37 😲😲😲
Whoa whoa whoa
The First Dwarf! That's a good name ❤
Ok... THIS looks interesting as hell. The mech reminds me of Dark Cloud 2.
Well this may still have plenty of rough edges right now, but the promise is also plain to see. Thanks for sharing it with us, Splat!
Maybe it's just me, but I love dragons and I loooove the snappy dragon companion!
Did I hear a Rock and Stone? \m/
You had me at "dwarf." I'm not a huge survival/crafting game fan, but dwarves just make everything better. For an early demo it definitely shows some promise.
Fern Gully, man, you brought back some memories there... Also, the gate needed mana... link it up.. ;)
The mech repair animation... kinda looks like.... he's fixing it by making it REALLY HAPPY!
17:24 That the mech has a stamina bar made my interest in this drop like a stone.
First thing I thought seeing the intro was 'nice, Malakai Makaisson getting his own game'. But the it reminded me of that game Splat played (insert amount time here) ago, where he had that Combat Mech turned Agri Mech and had to clean the nature by squirting water about.

Fern Gully was one of my favorite movies as a kid!
Music giving Dune vibes
Yes splattercat. The mama powered gate strangely doesn’t work when you don’t plug it into mana 😂🤷♂️
I was just thinking the other day “there just aren’t enough post apocalyptic dwarf fortress building survival games..” - Thanks Splattercat! =)
Usually I don't wish games would be in early access... I wish this game was in early access.
For some reason hopping in a giant mech deforesting half the countryside suddenly reminded me of Ferngully. You're basically walking around in the combination forester/sawmill from that movie.
I enjoyed rift breaker for what it was. Thanks for the heads up will keep an eye on this.
Holy wtf. A talking pet dragon? Take my goddamn money.
Malakai Makaisson, is that you?
"Aye, laddie."

Finally. Something about this game other than a teaser video
Bruh this game looks sick asf
That intro went hard. Also, the dwarf VA sounds like a soft-spoken Thor.
he sounds like a fat DnDer butchering lines and trying to be witty, as does the "dragon".
The arcana-tech looks really interesting.
Hey Splat! I wanted to bring your attention to the game Cursed Crew, it is a FTL-ish game made by creator(s) of the fantastic Rimworld Vanilla Expanded mod series
Definitely Riftbreaker vibes, but fantasy and dwarfs, and no diggy hole.
i swear to god if one of you says "vibes" again

Hahaha was gonna say, must be new here 😂
You said it right, somewhat similar to Rift Breaker, or Factorio on graphical steroids thank Splatter Cat for the preview,
29:12 That is one hipster looking dwarf in the flannel.
Your gate had a power requirement. You needed to plumb it into the mana to work.
Riftbreaker, and somehow the beginning of Dyson Sphere Program.
I see Splat not placing a defense tower on every possible square along the wall: "First time?"
Also, they need different voice actors. Dwarf sounds... OK-ish, just needs a bit more gruff, but Dragon is Chris Pratt levels of voice acting.
I thought it was AI voicework
The dragon is awesome!
That intro track definitely has Goldsmith Shadow feel to it
It's giving off They Are Billions vibes
I love the Deep Rock reference.
Extra points for the Fern Gully reference, heh.
Yo, the name is Splatty
The logic is erratic,
Potato in a jacket,
Toys in the attic...
They didnt had to make the dragon's voice that sexy
Looks really interesting, I wonder what it plays like once you have some villagers in the colony...

Wow this looks nice! Want it.
Great soundtrack
weenis is the elbow! this is not the consonant you are looking for!
I swear I’ve had the idea of dwarves in blimps for years now and there it is realized on a video game menu.
Interesting, worth a wish list.

It let me right into the playtest! whoop
Only thing lacking in this play test is a soundtrack by Wind Rose! This has potential.
Never want to play a game where I have to chop down trees and mine stone ever again...
But I might give this a chance later when I change my mind
In the beginning the MC said it would be a good spot to build cause you can smell the forest. Are you sure the MC isn't an elf?
I KNOW!!!! Thats a grudgin!
The gate wasn't connected to the mana system, and it did say it has 0% mana charge. I believe that's why it didn't want to open.
Comparing the game to Riftbreaker is pretty high praise. I love that game, there isn’t a whole lot of games on the market like it or have that level of polish.
Lol splat not realising the gate needed mana hurt my brain
This needs to have a co op option and Scotish Dwarfs
