    I purchased mine from Agena... the Antares F6.3 for way less than the Celestron unit. Made in Canada and works great for $55 less!

    I just watched my first video made by you and I really enjoyed it and learned a lot, thanks.When looking at other videos you have made I noticed quite a few were on firearms. Telescopes and firearms....if you ride Harleys we could be long lost brothers!

    Hmm that is a good question. If you use 4x4 binning on the NexImage 5 and use the focal reudcer I suppose it is possible. I can't be positive though unless I try it. I'd recommend the reducer either way though, it is something I always use.

    ***** Oh yes definitely! It will make your images much brighter. To get rid of vignetting you need to take flat frames.

    Nice video! I love this focal reducer. Some time ago, I tried to save some money and bought the Antares focal reducer. I was able to get a good deal on a used Celestron and just dearly love it. Thanks for sharing the video!

      Thanks, I never have used an Antares, but I almost bought one of the f/3.3 reducers. Then I thought more about that, and just though it would cause too many problems being that fast so I ended up getting the Celestron. I love it too and always use it! The only thing I haven't used it for was imaging the Supernova in M82. I took that at the full 2,032mm.

      I did some imaging of M82 with my dslr and 80mm refractor. Of course, I'm using my SE mount, so the 80mm handles the wind a bit better than the 8" sail. When there's no wind, the 8" views are awesome. Our astronomy club setup tonight...No wind, very little clouds. Great night...

    Have been using a small aperture refractor for large targets and a Newtonian reflector for others. Just bought a Schmidt Cassegrain for lunar and planetary work. Have ordered one of these 6.3 reducer/correctors. When the weather clears I will see how f/6.3 compares to my f/5.0 Newtonian and my f/3.6 refractor using my asi294 camera. Am considering a HyperStar. Sounds good. Thanks.

    What's happening if I use two 6.3 reduce together if
    Converts f/10 optical system to faster f/6.3 for a significantly wider field of view
    Shortens exposure times for astrophotography by 3 times
    .....maybe I can get a 3.3 reducer focus

      Very unlikely it would work, the telescope/mirror system particularly the secondary would give you no wider field and likely induce some very severe distortions. Cheers.

    Nice video. I have a hyperstar for wide field imaging, but this looks nice for imaging small targets. Using this and my ASI224 could probably make some nice very zoomed in images of galaxies.

    bought one for my old C8 orange SCT and I cannot get focus at all with diagonal in it.. only by taking off the diagonal and just putting the eyepiece in can I see thongs focused.. but hard on overhead objects.. Another thing it worked on my 5" Maksutov (1500mm fl ) with diagonal and eyepiece. Other issue cannot hook my DSLR up to it at all.. so must need buy a certain type adapter to connect camera to reducer?

    Great video. My question is if I use my ZWO 183 MC pro camera will I have to worry about back spacing? Would the camera with 55MM already set up on it would I just screw right onto the reducer/corrector?

    There's a trade-off with this! You will lose magnification for a given eyepiece. The image Will be brighter but at less magnification. You're also adding more glass into the light path.

    OK. Not sure I will get a response on an old thread but..... I have one of these and used it today. The instructions you refer to also state that this is NOT to be used ( they even emphasise this in bold type ) with an eye piece longer than 35mm.. It does not say why though.. I have used with 40mm plossl before seeing this. Is there an explanation for this?

    Does the addition of a focal reducer change the magnification of a given eyepiece versus not using a focal reducer? BTW, your reviews are excellent!

      Yes, the magnification is reduced by the same number printed on the reducer. In this case, it would be by .63
      No Focal Reducer, a 25mm eyepiece = 2032mm/25mm = 81.28x
      With f/6.3 Reducer, the 25mm eyepiece = 1280mm/25mm = 51.2x
      If you divide 51.2x by .63 it equals 81.28x
      Therefore, whatever factor of focal length reduction is done by the focal reducer, the same is done to your eyepiece magnification. I hope that helps!

    Hey Simon, good vid, thanks! I do have a question though. I am new to this and so far I think I prefer a refractor for quality and viewing enjoyment. You said you like to keep the focal reducer on pretty much all the time on your SCT. I’m sort of understanding that to mean that your focal length of the SCT is too long for the type of viewing you enjoy. My thoughts for myself would be to buy a 120 mm refractor with an FL of about 850, and then use a 2x Barlow to get a longer (1650) focal length. Does this make sense to you? I’m really conflicted as to what kind of telescope I should buy…. 🤔😀 cheers!

    just wondering, I'm finding that no matter how far forward on the dovetail I put the 8SE I still hit the the altazimuth fork base with the diagonal, just barely, it doesn't quite clear the base in order to observe at the zenith?
    Do you find this to be true as well?
    If so, what do you do, remove the focal reducer?

    Thanks for this, it's just what I was looking for! One question: The camera T-adapter seems to go a little ways into the body of the telescope so does it still work ok with the reducer on there? Same with barlows although I doubt I would be using one at the same time as the reducer! Thanks!

      I have never used a barlow with a reducer, that definitely would defeat the purpose. :) As for the t-adapter, if you are just using a normal Celestron T-adapter and T-ring, there are no issues for me. Vignetting? Yes, but that is what flat frames are for if you are doing photography. I hope that helps!

    Would this work with a larger 48mm t-adapter? I use a canon 5d mark II and the full frame sensor gets cut off on the corners with the regular size adapter/t-ring

    100% time on your telescope ? It means you bought the wrong telescope for your needs. You need one with the lower focal distance instead of lowering it all the time.

      No , the scope is exactly what I need with focal reducer always attached.
      You cannot find a SC8 scope with short focal length.
      It's 8inch , small and light , just need one accessory to make it even better.
      It's perfect

    could this be used just for observation as i see that you use it for photography but but i just dropped a crap load of cash for this guy so it will be a while before i get a camera unless im able to run this onto my computer inside.. i just dropped 1k almost on the 8 inch gonna have to wait on this for a bit.

    I have a Canon 700 DSLR and how would I hook that up to my CPC scope to do Astrophotography. I have read the perfect distance is 101 mm but that to me is "What you talking about" Anyone can throw up things like this that mean nothing. So what would tube extensions you would use SLYMIN? Can you quote Canon serial numbers as well?

    You can leave the FR on even with planetary viewing...just use a shorter FL ep. to get back the magnification you lost.

      Yes, shoot a good set of flat frames every time you image.

    Hey Cody, I have a Celestron CPC 8. You mentioned that if you wouldn't recommend using a focal reducer/corrector for planetary. I have a ZWO ASI385MC I want to use with it for planetary imaging. If I don't use the Focal Reducer, what is the back focus? It is 105mm with the FR. Would it be back to the 55mm backfocus without it? Or is the same 105 or something different? I'm trying to google the information but have not found it yet. Thanks for your help. And thanks for your awesome videos.

      Without a field flattener/reducer, all you need to do is obtain focus and you’re good to go!

      @@AstroBlender so no back focus? Just the SCT T-adaptor attached to the camera? The 385 has a 12.5 backfocus from the sensor to the front of the flange of the the 385 camera.

    I bought this reducer for my nexstar 6se, i've only had 1 chance to use it so far, but visually, and also using the neximage 5, the apparent size of the moon seemed no different. Am i doing something wrong or is this reducer not worth it using the nexstar 6? Was planning on using it for the eclipse coming up to capture the entire sun.

      It definitely will make a difference with the 6 SE. If you are using the same eyepiece and swap the reducer out you should notice a difference for sure.

    Dear Cody, thank you very much for your videos! I've got really lot of useful information about astronomy in general and Celestron SE8 and different accessories for it in particular (I have Celestron C8-SCT, so it's pretty much the same). Can I ask your advice please?
    Regarding the brightness of picture and deepsky objects applicability:
    - In online shops & forums there are a lot of positive reviews about the applicability of f/6.3 reducer for visual observation of deepsky object - that it gets more visible, brighter etc.;
    - It is interesting to compare two options (for Celestron C8 SCT):
    - If I use the eyepiece [ES 82° 14mm without f/6.3 reducer] then I come to something like this:
    [145x magnification] / [0.56° FoV] / [1.40 mm exit pupil];
    - If I use [ES 82° 8.8mm with f/6.3 reducer] then it should give pretty much the same:
    [146x magnification] / [0.56° FoV] / [1.40 mm exit pupil];
    So the question is:
    - If I come to absolutely the same characteristics (magnification, FoV and exit pupil) in these two options - does it still make a difference in visual perception of deepsky objects?
    I.e. - will [145x / 0.56° / 1.40mm with f/6.3 reducer] give a nicer experience with deepsky objects than [145x / 0.56° / 1.40mm without f/6.3 reducer]?
    - PS: Of course, 145x is too high for many deepsky object - I used it just as an example, because the characteristics of [14mm without f/6.3] turned out to be absolutely the same as [8.8mm with f/6.3]. But the question is still valid in general: for any common [magnification / exit pupil] which can be reached both with and without f/6.3 reducer - does it make sense to use f/6.3 option to have a better experience with deepsky

    Can you use it with an EDGE HD models? I know you can thread it on but does it mess up the optics? Man it's about double the price now at $163.

    Sorry, but this reducer is not working to take photos with my Canon camera. For visual use it's ok. But for photos can't get on focus with my camera.

      hi there , with my C8 all worked fine visual and AP with canon and adapter to diagonal to FR6,3, with my new C 9,25 visual is excellent , but AP will not focus, cannot get it out far enough, maybe 3 turns. I think i will try a longer length t adapter between diagonal and FR and see what happens....btw the C9,25 blew my mind when lookin at the moon visually -- great scope. but i have a moonlite sc focuser with the longer barrel for the FR on order ''just '' costs a mere 450 €

    I know this is an old video, but but does anyone know what the newer Celestron 0.7X does that this one doesn't do... at 4 times the price??

      The .7x reducers are only for the EdgeHD, because those models already have a built in field flattener. They also are huge; much more glass, hence the price difference.

      @@AstroBlender Thanks mate, that answers the why (the flattener bit). Will this f6.3 still do the same job on an 1100HD? I have a Meade planetary camera directly in the back of mine (live viewing using a TV) and the scope has to be within a micro-degree for objects to appear at all... Even the Celestron Starsense isn't accurate enough with 16 auto align points, and 30 calibration stars!! I thought this device might widen the field of view to at least get the object on the screen so I can centre it (and see nebula's better).

      Yes they are different...You can buy an adapter for a Mac to use this focal reducer and other Schmidt attachments.

      Generally no, A focal reducer lowers the focal length or "Zooms out" in a sense, the faster f/ratio also providing faster exposure speed. This makes them suited for large widefield objects like Nebulae, or star clusters like the Pleiades. Astrophotographers use them for these wider sharper field of views, and that it allows shorter exposures. For Lunar+Planets you tend to want the opposite, you want a very long focal length to "Zoom in" as planets are tiny objects. That's either wanting a telescope with a long native focal length, the use of a Barlow to increase focal length, or a camera with a very narrow sensor.
      One example though I can think of where you would use one here is if you're into lunar photography and the native focal length of your telescope is long so that only a portion of the Moon is visible but you want to take photos of the whole moon. Often you would take photos of each visible portion of the Moon and stitch them together to make a higher-res image of the whole moon, but if you don't want to do this you could use a focal reducer to "zoom out" so that photos would show the full disc of the moon. If you were looking at the Moon visually, I'd recommend a wide eyepiece instead of a reducer.

      I don't image planetary nebula that often, but I usually use the focal reducer. At 2,032mm taking a long exposure is tricky. It is hard to keep the stars perfectly round. So, I use the focal reducer and then if I want to get closer on the nebula I usually just crop the resulting image.

    Celestron website says this works with all their Cassegrain from 5” up-
    But I have the 5” Maksutov SLT- with this work with that?

      5" Maksutov's don't have SCT threads on the rear cell, so it wouldn't work without some sort of adapter, and even then with an adapter the spacing might be off, so it isn't guaranteed to work.

      Slymin - blue fireball technologies makes an SCT adapter for Maksutov-Cass telescopes that fits the Celestron 127 slt- I bought one and the Celestron focal reducer- and they work great, gives my Mak about twice the field of view.

      For ref anyone trawling the threads in future. I have my Nexstar 127 mak working with this reducer, works well. I needed lynx astro mak to sct adaptor along with baader 2408140 sct to 2" visual back to get a solid imaging train to support the heavy 7 position 2" filter wheel and astro cam I'm using.

    I already have a 8se, technically the lowest magnification is 29x, so, what is the best setup to get that magnification? Hou do I calculate the proper reducer for this specific scope?

      8SE has 2032mm of focal lenght. The focal reduser, reduces of 0.63 factor, therefore 2032x0.63=1280mm. Divide this focal lenght by the magnification desired and you get the focal of eyepiece needed, hence teorically you need 44mm of eyepiece
