    I just did an experiment with one cotton ball completely saturated with P Jelly and the other completely saturated in 91% rubbing alcohol.
    P Jelly burned for 270 seconds (4 min 30 sec)
    Alcohol burned for only 160 seconds (2 minutes 40 seconds).

      Slimm Jimm lol what I thought at first too, it’s petroleum jelly

    • @asantos859
      @asantos859 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup. As long as the cotton is completely saturated by PJ. Melted PJ into cotton is best

      This P Jelly demo wasn't anything like the ones I use. I've timed mine and they also burn 4:30 - 5:30 min.
      This demo didn't make the cotton balls/P Jelly well.
      Most cotton balls are actually rolls of cotton. Just unroll it, wipe P Jelly on, then roll it back up. I put them in old film canisters or wide mouth pill bottles. More P Jelly = more burn time. It's long-chain hydrocarbons like wax, but more flexible.
      It's super fast to make these and no melting wax is required- way less mess/easy cleanup.
      If you squeeze excess Jelly off before packing them, then when you use them, cotton balls can be pulled apart slightly to separate cotton fibers-- which will catch a spark from any ferro-cerium striker rod you have... often first time. That's important if you've ever tried to use matches or lighter with wet & (near hypothermia) numb hands.... no dexterity.
      Wax & sawdust-- great for good weather camping, if you can tolerate the mess of making them.

    The jelly needs to saturate the ball more and it will last much longer.

    Nice video. Yet you fail to consider that liquid alcohol of any kind is susceptible to evaporation. Petroleum jelly not so much.

      This id what I was thinking. For long term storing and wet weather, I think petroleum is best. But the others are great for hot flame when you got it on hand.

    It is hard to really say which performed the best without knowing the amounts or volumes of the three substances that were used (i.e. how much of the active ingredient you added to the cotton ball). And the test would need to be accurately timed. Petroleum jelly works by a completely different mechanism than the alcohol products. It's advantage is that it doesn't degrade or evaporate over time; and Vaseline impregnated cotton balls store well, making them a good choice for backpacking, camping, bushcraft etc.

    You didn't use the p jelly right you need to equally spread the jelly on it and it'll last for about 8-10 minutes so technically the p jelly would've won but ya.

      I've tried the jelly a few times and only got a few minutes out of it. I've tried wax and got 11 mins.

      PJ is much better for sure if done correctly. Melt the PJ and let cotton ball soak. Works well even in wet environments

    Alcohols will evaporate and leave just the water. Denatured contains petroleum distillate so may as well just carry gasoline in a baggie. Didn't use the right amount of Vaseline.

      Lovely video content! Forgive me for the intrusion, I would appreciate your initial thoughts. Have you ever tried - Proutklarton Incredible Match Plan (just google it)? It is a smashing exclusive guide for getting an understanding of how to survive in a disaster and make your own survival food minus the normal expense. Ive heard some great things about it and my buddy at last got great results with it.

    On the video the rubbing alcohol looks like it's burning hotter, it also burned out quicker which sort of confirms that.

    Jelly wins because of versatility. And that cotton ball was clearly not saturated in petroleum jelly.

    The P Jelly starter would have lasted a LOT longer had you prepared it properly. Meaning, you have to thoroughly massage the PJelly into the cottonball.

    Take the cotton with vaseline and coat the entire ball , massage it into the fiber , it protects the cotton and burns less intense but longer...

    Nice video testing 💡idea. I have two questions, 1. Would the results vary if equal quantity of fuel was used for each type? and 2. Don't all liquid alcohol of similar purity burn at same temperature? Thanks for your time.

    hello, awesome vid.. i have a question though. i would like to seal my cotton rounds with wax and i would like to soak it in an accelerant before hand.. what would you recommend? will the alcohol vaporise and end up redundant? please advise .. thank you @Cooking Different

    Take a small piece of newspaper, put petroleum jelly all over it, then put some melted wax and some vegetable oil. After that roll it up and light it. This takes a while to start going but makes a decent sized flame and will burn for a while.

  • @old-school1969

    I’m hoping someone sees this and knows the answer. Can you saturate with the denatured and seal that with the jelly to seriously prolong the half-life of the alcohol in the ball while sitting in a bug out bag?

  • @jerrybobteasdale
    @jerrybobteasdale 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Try methanol(methyl alcohol, or Heet gas antifreeze in yellow bottle) instead of isopropyl or denatured alcohol. Is cheaper.

    • @middknightdream1577

      Petroleum jelly is slightly soluble to alcohol. Alcohol can also leach through or eat plastic depending on the type you use, petroleum jelly usually will not seep through plastic.

    Why not use thermite? When I burned my ex's beloved car down I mixed it in my backyard. Never be an unkind jerk to a chemist. Loved watching his sad face around town. He loved that car more than me and now he doesn't have neither. A kg of it should allow you to light a few camp fires. Just don't use too much of it at the same time. It's potent stuff. Have fun cooking. Fish over a camp fire is always yummy.
