The Secret Of Hybrid Film Music

- Today we dive into the world of hybrid film scores, a fascinating blend of orchestral and electronic elements shaping today's cinematic soundscapes. One of my all-time favorite film composers is Johan Johansson. He is a master of shaping organic sounds into mysterious electronic music, like he did for the movies Sicario and Arrival. Then I'll share my creative journey in crafting hybrid scores, featuring a reimagining of Arrival using only a cello and immersive sound design. Perfect for film score enthusiasts and aspiring composers!

Hey guys! What do you think my next video should be about? On my channel you'll find a survey, I would very glad if you can give your preference! 🙏 Thanks! 😁
Man. I haven’t heard Ludwig’s last name pronounced so well. That’s awesome dude
Hahaha, yeah I hear Americans say Gorraannzzen
@@IlanBednerAmericans💀 it not just them he has a Swedish background which means his last name isn’t going to sound the same for everyone, I hate when people target a specific demographic of people or a nation 😑
Well he is Dutch. Probably by proximity he'd hear more accurate Scandinavian pronunciations than the average American
@@thembanitheone true true
@@SStudiosCO why are you so triggered? It's true, deal with it
3:52 THIS IS SICKKKK HOLY SHEEETT
Arrival is absolutely sublime
The tip on using little alter boy as a moving pitch shifter was excellent.
The juno 6 came out in may 1982 and the chorus on it was not available separately, so this chorus wasn't available separately in the 70's or 80's. Btw. The braam in Sicario can easily be recreated with analog style synthesizers.
Interesting, thanks for pointing that out. Should have been the 80s, you're right. Apparently it's a Korg P-3300 layered with (probably) double basses
Excellent post. I've been thinking for a long time how to mark my sonic territory and this has pointed me in the right direction. I'm heavily influenced by the more experimental side of scoring and Arrival is an great example of that.
What i find cool about this is that you're showing how a small amount of processing on an otherwise familiar sound can go a long way. Like you're not doing anything super over-the-top to these sounds yet you put them all together and the result is unmistakably alien sounding. I found this to be a nice little reminder that the intention of the processing matters more than the complexity of it. Great video :)
Yeah, I try to resist my GAS and work with the stuff I have
This is nothing new. Jerry Goldsmith innovated this in the 70s and 80s. In an interview he talked about synths as being "just another instrument" that can be incorporated into an orchestra like any other. His scores for Logan's Run (1976), Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), and Hoosiers (1986) are good examples.
Johan is one of my favorites! His discography is amazing at evoking mood and atmosphere!
RIP
A bit weird to talk about him in present tense. In the video and comments.
@@anthonyh1298 his music lives forever, and so does his legacy. I loved "Flight from the City" 🕊🕊
Sounds absolutely sick, love it!
So late to the party!!! In the 90s you had collaborations between composers like Michael Kamen and Orbital (Event Horizon) or Michael Nyman and Damon Albarn (Ravenous). Great scores using both symohonic and electronic music...
Cool! I'll check it out!
Good video, though I would suggest raising the volume for future ones. Had to crank my volume to max just to hear this one well.
Thanks for your advice! Still figuring out how TH-cam does that, thought they cranked up a limiter or something like that... Do you make content as well?
@@IlanBedner TH-cam has problems with compression, I'm no expert but could it have something to do with that? I haven't published to youtube, but I've worked on some films before (nothing released).
@@iggyfenton5 The compression mostly affects the videos, and if your audio has demential high volume audio.
This is clear case of not properly having normalized your audio track when he recorded it.
Very nice, quality video about the topic. Great!
@2:44 That's (the Arrival aliens' "voice") Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe singing--live--through his modular rig, mostly processed in real time. INCREDIBLE!
Wonderful! Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you! Do you make music as well?
Wow the way playing with pitch and formant in alterboy adds a voice like texture is such a neat trick, really appreciate you sharing this technique.
That was great, thank you
Very eye-opening! Thank you for this.
You're welcome! You know a lot about music I assume from your name?😁
Super interesting! Thanks for the video
Really great video here. Great way to think outside the box.
Intersting Topic and video
That was awesome. I've always enjoyed Johannsson's works.
They add so much texture to the films he does. So cool to see it recreated!
Yess he's one of my favorites too! And Hildur Gudnadottir, or however you write that :)
@@IlanBedner yes definitely one of my favorites too. I really liked his additions to sicario
Great Content
Awesome...
Great tutorial on sound design. I'll experiment more with Little Alter Boy after watching your simple and effective use of layering. Nice!
Amazing!
Appreciated!
👏🏾 Well done.
Thanks! So how do you feel about the whole content vs art thing?
Prisoners is my favorite Johan score, absolutely haunting and beautiful. RIP.
Cool! Also by Dennis Villeneuve I believe?
@@IlanBedner yup
nice job on this!
Great video my friend!
Thank you!
So many other examples to cite. In fact, I'd say the great majority of film scores use these techniques.
RIP Johan Johanson
Great tutorial
Thank you! Any idea's for future videos?
Interesting video! Keep up the good work 👌
Thanks!
Yes I have been playing with these modified hybrid audio tracks and sampling, it’s really interesting thanks ! Wondering where I should look for videos I can rescore! I find it much more interesting when there is a video to align with!
Thanks again Ilan
The Cuetube is a nice one, they have many demo films
I'm new to composing and I was immediately drawn to doing exactly what you're talking about in the video. I always start with string instruments but I usually add a chorus from the Echoboy vst and then a touch of Supermassive reverb to get an interesting sound.
Nice! Blackhole is also a good reverb if you're into that kind of sounds
Awesome, the pitch shifting is a great idea - love using automation for sound design. I've also been listening to Johan Johansson lately. Max Richter and Ludwig Goransson are great too
Nice! Yeah I love those guys as well, especially Ludwig Goransson. Did you know he's the producer of Childish Gambino as well?
yeah, everything he does is amazing. I can only hope to produce at that level some day. definitely inspiring
Great video
Thanks! What kind of music do you make?
@@IlanBedner
Hey
More of like cinematic/film music.
yes, there are double basses layered, but the basis of this sound sound comes from a Korg P-3300. there’s a clip of Joann playing it while working on the score
Interesting! Do you know where to find that?
A solid way to make pads out of acoustic instruments is to remove the transient/attack. It can make it so much harder to recognize which instrument it is. Always fun to play around with.
Good idea!
Very good! I need to buy more instruments now lol
Haha, careful this can escalate really quick I can tell from experience
Johansson definitely used formant filters to sculpt the not-quite human vocals.
Criminally underrated content
Thanks!
I really like Drones by Orchestral Tools for this. Really amazing library with drones got from acoustic instruments. The drones themselves are like more than a minute long so they are always evolving and never sound stagnant. You also get the source sounds so you can process them however you like. Never played drones samples like these.
Good tip! What kind of films do you make music for?
@@IlanBedner I am mainly into Production/Trailer Music so Drones have really helped set the mood and the ambience in the intro 😃
Hi and thank you! Noob question) What DAW is that?
Logic Pro
Yep Logic is right as Geekymusic says! Just starting out with daws?
In my opinion Best soud effect movies, Dune Part 1&2, Arrival, Blade Runner, Quiet Place, Etc
Yeah, finally watched Dune pt2, sound design is insane 🤯
@@IlanBedner Hans Zimmer 🔥
Impressive work. But man I miss Johann Johannson.
Good video. But the levels are really low, it's an overall quiet upload. You also spoke all over the arrival example. Then when you rescored it, the level of the your version is much higher.
Thx I'll pay attention to it in the next video
Isn’t there a term for this music already...electroacoustic?
I didn't know the term, but yeh you're right that's kinda what I'm referring to. it's an interesting world :)
Sounds like doing a fart in an empty bath
Johan Johansson died in Berlin in 2018.
Yes I know, it's very sad... Too many of my favorite artists die too soon 🥲 . You're a fan as well, or do you have another fave?
So sad - A man with such artistic talent.
German toxicology reports indicated that a lethal combination of cocaine and flu medication was the likely cause of his death.
Great video!
