Just for the record, "The Band Live at Watkins Glen" is an unauthorized recording with only Bill Graham's announcements and Too Wet To Work/Jam coming from the show itself and all other tracks are from the Academy of Music out takes from the Rock of Ages remastered double cd with fake audience applause added. Google the album title and you will get all the gory details. Great picture selection by the way!
Also may I suggest to all who liked the photo display that there is a book "The Band Photographs" by Elliot Landy which includes some of the shots used here and is highly recommended.
Got there Thursday nite right after dark. We drove down from Syracuse in our Dodge pickup with 3 kegs of beer. Everyone else brought food and drugs, we seemed to be the only ones with beer. There was a line all weekend with people trying to trade anything for a cup of beer. We listened to great music with 600,000 of our best friends, rolled naked in the mud after the concert and boy was that a great time to grow up, if you didn't find yourself in a rice paddy dodging bullits. By then the war was mostly over for the Americans. Always have a soft spot in my heart for those of us that fought that thankless war! Also, I was lucky enough to be at Jerry Garcia's last show at Soldier's Field, Chicago. Traffic was the opening act, they were the best group I ever saw in concert, they were amazing!
Thanks for your great comment, like I said to someone else on here, I like hearing people's recollections of this. Well done, you for takin' the beer! I'm not only envious of you being there, I'm also envious that you saw Traffic, great band. :)
Saltine Warrior I have to back you up on the value of beer Saltine. We had a big red Coleman cooler full of iced quarts and were offered just about anything you could imagine. This is way before some genius put wheels on coolers. We lugged that damn thing around and used it like a bench during the show.
Charles Deitz haha! Another great comment on the value of beer at this event! Who did you enjoy the most? The GD, the AB or The Band?..or were they all great live on the day?..
TorkGirl8 I'm a Band freak TorkGirl8. Even to this day. I hate ranking the top bands, but for this show, I have to say 1.The Band 2. The Allman Brothers 3. Dead. But the differences were mine alone. They were all great.
All the bands played Friday night for a warmup and sound check. Allman Bros. played Ramblin Man for the first time, I believe. At least I had never heard it before. Fri. night warmup was as good as all day Saturday. Best concert I have ever been to by far.
Wow! Cool story. Did you know him personally? How did you end up on the tour bus? I also made a video to Rick Danko's 'Sip The Wine' which can be found on my uploads if you want to see that too. Thanks for your comment. :)
No. I didn't know him. We were at a place called Pulsations in Glen Mills PA. A dance club of all places! There were about 40 people there. The band had a harmonica player who we talked to at the end of the show. He asked if we had anything for "the head." We offered and he invited on the bus. Rick was in the back and we hung out for about 45 minutes. Everyone was so nice to us. We were just young kids really. I'll be sure to check out your other video.
Just to clarify some of the mystique surrounding Watkins Glen, there is no video footage only photographs and some 8 mm footage fans took. Even though many have wished they attended, it wasn't suck a great festival as the thunderstorm was too hard and severe to really overcome. The day started fine with free access and all the great LSD available and after copping some Orange Sunshine double barrel acid (which I was told I should probably split it with a friend) but I figured we were upstate for the weekend to get wild so I took the whole thing around 10 am. The concert started at noon sharp with Bill Graham announcing the Dead who played about 4 hours under a hot bright summer day while everyone tripped and danced. When the Dead finished there was a great late afternoon vibe as the Band set up for their set and all was fine as they started around 5 or 5:30. A few songs in, heaven turned into hell as the roar of big black clouds came over the mountains and peaking on acid this was the last thing we could have imagined. The winds got strong, cold and wet as the storm ripped in and there was nowhere to go or hide, we had to stand out there and take it which would have been easier if we weren't so high. After the heavy part, the Band resumed and it got dark before the Allman Brothers came on and we split during their set because we were so damaged, and still had to make our way back to the car which was approximately 5 miles away, then we had to drive a few hours back to NYC where we collapsed.
Always loved "The Band"! Fantastic tune! Hope you've been well my friend...We just passed the 50th anniversary of WOODSTOCK! Did you hear Michael Lang had another planned for this year but cancelled? Probably for the best anyway huh? Take care! ~ Dave
Nope. Only made it within 20 miles. All the roads were blocked with parked cars. I wasn't going to abandon my car for days and walk in. Watkins Glen made up for that loss.
I was there early. As the crowd grew, it seemed to grow uglier and Woodstock-formulaic. I left before the actual event. I doubt I'd be able to actually remember any of the performances, but I'm content with my decision.

It was great I was there
Was not aware of that
I was there, and I only remember being high and working on remaining high for several days without the need or desire to sleep. What an awesome time!
😂
It was a great experience, 👍
It was crazy but a great concert

I would rate them the same. The Band was extra special!
I was there right in front of the band stand. There were indeed at least 500,000 people. the Band was awesome that day.

Smoked a joint with Rick Danko on The Band's tour bus. These guys are so missed.

Remembering Rick today - his birthday is December 29th. Such a loss. Funny, big-hearted, talented man.
I had a dream where rick and I were talking, Richard was there and Levon too with the band. Jammed with the band, great dream.
Just started getting into them

"Open up your arms and feel the good....it's a coming....a brand new day"
There best fragmented memory ever..up front to right of giant speakers..rain ..thunder and they played to thunder..wish was a vid. of that
Thanks for sharing your memories of the day, Cheryl. :)

Was there arrived two days before and was some of the last to leave ! What a strange trip it was
Great channel with great sounds.

Great to hear them Live Jacqui, what a great band they were.

The Band were great as well as the Allman-Dead Jam later on at night.
Best ever
Thanks for the rekindlin' the fire in me 'ol hippy blood. :-))
Fab, Jacquie !
what is wrong about being this old? we older folks got to hear a lot of awesome music that far surpasses anything put out these days.
Awesome 👏
Looks like that must be Levon's dog.
Clapton was right- Richard was a magical shaman on vocs and everything else
fantastic version, right??

Wish I had a Time Machine, Dave! 🤭
@@TorkG8 I've been wishing that for a long time :)

You left before hearing anyone play that day? Wow.
This was not recorded at Watkins Glen.
Did you read the pinned comment? I added that info under the video. The video title comes from the name of the album.
