- In April of 2021 the First Kyushu K meeting was held in Amagi in Fukuoka Prefecture. The K of course stands for Kei car; those small-capacity cars of Japan that are loved the world over. The Kei cars of show ranged from the early 360cc cars, such as the Subaru 360 and R2, the Honda N360, plus cars from Suzuki, Mitsubishi and Daihatsu, to the newer (and much sportier) kei cars of the 660cc era like the Autozam AZ-1, Honda Beat, Suzuki Cappuccino, plus so many more.

@@azurantaiki some parallel imports there? As far as I know, kei is a JDM only specification and cars like Alto have different specs for export.
@@gaijincoolgoods9955 yup. Some imports and mostly its because of Perodua/Daihatsu. Perodua is the manufacturer here that makes most Daihatsu kei cars with 660cc engine.

@@hondamanvtec2894 I'll answer that, but I MUST remove the political aspect of it. That's just a mess and ripe for argument about... not cars. My answer is, lets stop being wasteful. Let's use cars, and consume responsibly. When cars DO reach the ends of their useful lives (which will vary from how heavily a car actually gets used (not a set date!)). Then upgrade. I have no problem with electric cars. They're not my preference, but they're the future

@@wasabicars I view the kei-spec regulations as kind of an enlightened policy. Congestion is reduced, drivers get a lot of savings from tax, tolls, insurance and fuel consumption. The makers are constrained by the specs so there is no race for bigger and more powerful and they have to work within the design constraints, just like an F1 car designer.
Yeah some sweeeeeeet rides there! Love the funky stuff that the Japanese do so well.

If I could go to ANY car show in Japan it would be this one. AMAZING old Kei-cars extremely nostalgic and kawaii for a former resident of Tokyo. Love the pickup trucks especially, like the one full of Shiba Inu. What make was that? Thank you Daniel, one of my favorite episodes of Wasabi Cars yet! 😁

One of your absolute best videos to date, Dan. Having the 40 series Crown and the Laurel (?) in this video made it absolutely awesome. Personally, I'm a huge fan of Japanese land yachts (I own a neatish MS112 Royal Saloon, soon to be 1uz powered), so any Crowns, Cedrics etc are right up my alley. The Kei cars in this video were heaps cool too.

@@wasabicars there's something amazing about the Crown. Mechanically basic, but a very sophisticated car at the same time. They also have an amazing purity about them as well. Kind of Cadillac like in concept, only built with precision, and ultimate reliability in mind. Personally, I'm glad they have a "nana car" reputation in Australia, as it makes them a very affordable classic car to own.

I can't wait for car shows to start up again. If I get the car I want in a few months, I might actually take it to one. I have seen a really nice early 70s Datsun Sunny (1600) near where I work the last couple of Saturdays. Older gent drives it.

@@wasabicars Sorry to hear that. Yeah the visual always gets us until we try it out. But the car meeting itself was pretty well I hope that now it will starting to open up the same in Europe so that I also can go to night drift what was cancelled last year.
And the show winners get.... Tiny gifts! Love Kei cars. Certainly a rare site in the US though I had a even rarer Toyota S800 which was as close as I got to Kei.

I had a similar car to the white Nissan notchback coupe in the video, mine was a 85 200ex, ca18 twin plug head, auto. I got it for $200us off a witch (I know, but she was actually) and drove it across country from Vermont to San Diego. Didn’t miss a beat!

Now what is that car at 2:24? I really don't recognize it... Also that S12 is really something. The owner must have modified it in the 1980s and kept it like this ever since! I've spotted four Honda Today's, but only had the round headlamps. Such a rare occasion to see one!

The cool, dark car at 2:24 is a 3rd generation Isuzu Gemini. I'm sure as I mention that, you recall them. I did see a rare, red, "Type Competition" version a year or two ago. As for the AZ-1 drive-by... Lol! It probably just makes the drivers feel cool

Hi Richard. If you have any questions of what a car is, just leave a timestamp and car colour, and I'll let you know. Also, Toyota does, but doesn't really, do kei so much. They have their Daihatsu brand for that segment
@@wasabicars thank you so much, i might not completely understand the term kei cars, but when i saw this term the first time it was mind blowing all the cars i never saw before, some do look like the ones over here with different names and turbo's added like:
Toyota starlet here over there it's a glanza with turbo, i do mention this because that's really a dream car to me i did drive my starlet 3 geared automatic from the Netherlands to spain for holiday and been trough mountains were i started to love that old car more than my young hybrid car
I like the very first car on the left blue one before the police drives by, but i don't know if it's a kei car? And cars like the orange minivan at 8:50, i also see a grey suzuki wagon which only has one door at the front i like those specifically different cars and i start to think i could really get in love with a minivan because of the rare looks and the smart gearshifters wich are placed high and the jdm style on them they're just not driven stanced here I'm so jealous! I'll hope to be aible to visit a meeting over there one day
I tend to have a ho-hum response to the fan-boy Japanese cars, but will admit that white Silva was ultra clean with perfect understated mods. I did notice a 80-81 Subaru GL like the one I owned briefly and a glancing shot of a bro-dozer lifted truck, quite the mix.
I'm not big on many super popular cars either. AE86... (stifles yawn). There was a 80's Subaru in this video?! Might I be blocking it out? About when in the video?
@@wasabicars I think I took a glancing view of the Honda emblems and in turned it into a Subaru GL center headlight. I couldn't find it in a second go either. Overlaying my memories of my white 80 onto a few frames of your video I guess. There are worse way to be wrong.

I daily a Kei car. It's a Suzuki Wagon Z. And while standard and boring, it's reliable and zips around as fast as I need it. Good stuff.
The t360 Honda truck (1st generation blue with all the doggies), had the highest hp for that year per cc beating Ferrari . 9000rpm and dohc engine, Honda made this instead of the n360 to make the cut off for kei car manufacture status. Next generation TN360 was sohc and 32hp for mass production.

You might be surprised to hear that they are quite rare. And, I’ve never seen a modified one. I’ll keep an eye out though.

What surprise me the most is although many countries had already put attention to global environmental problems, turns out in US & in my own country there's a regulation that banned this type of low cc car, although it's much more compact for single ownership & for save space & fuel consumption, funny ha
I don't know for certain, but I suspect car manufactures want to stop imports, and block such cars because they would have to develop new cars to compete

That's an S12 Nissan Silvia. S13 onwards are all getting drifted into the ground. The S12 is super rare to see.

favourite thing about kei cars is that 3 cylinders are getting insanely powerful, which means we can start having 100+hp 400-600kg nuggets
Kei cars are limited to 64ps which is enough, but certainly not insane

@@gaijincoolgoods9955 as much as I'd like a kei car (where I live is rife with imported kei trucks and vans) the engines are pretty lacking when it comes to ascending steep-ish roads. For the city roads though, they do pretty well.
@@possibly8180 they are built for Japanese driving conditions. I live in Japan and have driven my kei car all around the country and never have felt the need for more power since on most highways speed limits are 80 or 100 kph. But yes, I can see in the USA where you might not be able to keep up, especially since everyone seems to accelerate so hard.
