Joe is always keeping us in the loop in the realm of the oft-neglected video game audio. Good to know this future purchase of mine will sound awesome in my living room!
Assuming they already had the code for directional sound in the engine for Pro logic II, it makes sense they were able to map that to 5 speakers. But the discrete lfe channel that doesn't appear to be just a crossover style mixed from the other channels means someone actually cared enough to mix new audio just for the sub woofer. That's pretty neat for Nintendo!
It's a shame surround sound is so ignored. A decently set up system really makes a huge difference to immersion and even has some practical benefits since you can hear the direction things are happening from. The DSP "surround" sound bars, headphones and whatever other nonsense there is out there just doesn't compare.
Be cool if you did a video on the PS5's new Dolby Atmos that uses the Tempest 3D Audio Engine data to process the sound. From my testing I have been quite impressed. SpiderMan 2 seems to have a proper Atmos mix but Horizon FW doesn't but still sounds great.
The improved sound was one of the first things I noticed playing the game. Those seeing this title card made me think for a moment that I had been fooled because the? Suggested to me that perhaps it was fake or something. I’m glad to see that it’s a rare example of a switch game with correctly implemented sound
I might actually try for a surround setup in the media room I'm building. I always just went with decent stereo setups, but now that I have the room why not. The only semi-serious audio setup I've done is on my pc with schiit dac/amp/eq and yamaha hs5 speakers with the hs8s sub. I've never considered the sub being treated as a channel before. I've always assumed that 5.1 setup just use the sub like in a stereo setup and low pass all the low frequencies to it.
Ah now, the original games looked fantastic for the time and have aged surprisingly well. Sure, jaggies, but that's because that's never been something Nintendo have ever payed attention to.
I'm still annoyed that with my setup being limited to SPDIF (over optical or coax) as a maximum for digital sound I can't get surround sound out of my switch even when piped through my TV's optical output because the switch only does LPCM audio. All the one thing I'm thinking of trying is getting a splitter just so I could route the audio through my Xbox One and have it convert the sound into compressed digital surround sound. I wanted to try this game and surround sound myself but obviously I haven't been able to.
Yup, I had this issue with the Wii U at one point :/ If Nintendo doesn't wanna pay the license fee, wish they'd at least have a dlc in the shop or something that's would activate the feature...
@@richardwilliams877 I just tried it too and the Xbox won't take the LPCM input and convert it to compressed surround sound. I'm stuck holding off until I get a proper AV receiver until then.
I was using 5.1 topslink from tv to amp. Disapointed to hear the switch only suports PCM 5.1 so I could not benefit. But now I have it so the switch its now plugged right into thte amp direct, no more problem.
How do you activate this on Switch? Just set it to surround under audio settings? And I’m assuming this isn’t Dolby Digital but an uncompressed LPCM format right?
I was beginning to wonder if TH-cam even supported 5.1. Sound Sack updates are always a delightful surprise.

Loved the visual representation. Thanks for the heads up too!
I missed this channel
New Sound Sack mind you.
Psst, Joe has plenty of sound sack...in his bathroom.
The sound design was already marvelous before. Love what they did, with the remaster

Oh yeah I forgot they updated that. I'll have to turn it on and see if I notice anything at all in Spider-Man 2.

Watching this video on my crusty old phone with the speakers cranked all the way up made me feel bad.
Holy crap! Suddenly my TV supports TH-cam 5.1! (LG C1)
I remember the last audio episode I has to watch in crappy stereo...
Good to hear. Be sure to check out the Xbox 360 episode and listen to the channel callouts in the beginning and listen if they work.
5.1 sounds like my math grade, that's how much of a clue what 5.1 is to me.
I think I'll just give this video a like.

Awesome stuff!
nice, more 5.1 videos pls
Pretty sure I can tell the sound quality difference even in my AirPods Pro.
Omfg a sound sack!
Very cool joe....was wondering if this channel was still active
Action movies that lack proper punch and kick impact sounds are my biggest pet peeve.

Yeah I suffer from the same problem. PS5 is an another offender.
Center channel is never really used in the mix unfortunately. Technically it's there, but it's so low you simply won't hear it.
You hear it every time you fire a weapon.

I talk about audio

It's Linear PCM 5.1, from what the settings tell me. And yes, it's in the system settings under TV settings
@@JacobNintendoNerd99 cool thanks
The sound in Metroid Prime Remastered is pretty great!
However, 5.1 audio is standard for all 1st party Nintendo games, so it's not *that* rare.
Common, but not standard. Mario Kart 8 is 2.0 stereo, and Smash Ultimate is 2.1 stereo.
@@SirYodaJedi What... have they removed surround sound in Mario Kart 8 on the Nintendo Switch, it was so great in the Wiiu version.
I think they butchered the art, but definitely felt that the actual sound design was much improved!
This Metroid game scares my weiner
