Marcus Belgrave is the most unsung and lyrical trumpet player of the last 30 years. Absolutely beautiful playing here. I have been digging him in a big way since the Ray Charles days....he is the "real deal" and has made a huge contribution to jazz and beauty. 5 stars!!!!
The tenor player, Charlie Gabriel, is my cousin. He is the cousin of my grandfather, the late great reedist Clarence Ford, Sr. Charlie is originally from New Orleans, which is evident by his natural swing and great sound on the horn.
The percussionist, Gayelynn McKinney, and the bassist, Marion Hayden, are first rate musicians who happen to live in Detroit, but could easily be playing with the best players in New York.
A life..well traveled and beyond......This live performance tells you of a man's soul...thank you for your time and Music. Marcus Belgrave..kindly, Danny Barrett..
Wonderful music by some of Detroit's finest MUSICIANS. Thank you for the LOVE . I will keep all of you in my heart. I miss y'all too down here in Tennessee. :) Rest now Marcus. Love, Barbara Mercer
Marcus is so damn cool... Many years ago, when I was still living downtown Detroit, I was walking home from work up Woodward Ave. at about one in the morning & saw my man Dreadlock Larry sitting on the curb, drinking a 40 oz. He waved me over, and just then Mr. Belgrave took his trumpet out & proceeded to sit in for a long set with the R & B band that was playing at the cafe across the street. He tore that place right up... One of my best memories from that time.
Yes, Clearence Ford is My mothers first Cousin, I,ve got some great footage at Clarence's House when i was in N.O even his mom is there and his aunt Cecil & aunt Symantha.

Anyone know what the name of the song is?
"VIOLET FOR YOUR FUR". YOU CAN FIND IT AND THE SCORE IN THE REAL BOOK.
a female percussionist *and* upright bass. unusual and very cool!
hey, i'll take Jimmy Garrison over any rock bassist myself. i meant having a female upright bassist & a female drummer. was cool.
Really baeutiful... But I hate those strings...
