    I think something that gets breezed over here is that it's not just the place they want to put this. It's the place they already are and have been for decades. Most people like that all the Philly sports teams play in the same place. It's a unique thing for a city to have.

    I live in Philadelphia and frequently go to Chinatown. The arena will produce a huge traffic snarl. I would rather they move to Camden than build in Chinatown.

    6:58 I am so glad you highlighted this. Currently, our transit company, SEPTA, is in a dire financial situation. It's only because of state funding that we aren't going to deal with service cut backs (but fares are going up fast). There is no way 20,000+ more people will be able to get in for games/events with our current service/capacity levels. It would simply crash the system. Increased ridership might be used as a reason to increase suburban train frequency, but I doubt that'd make up for the additional costs. This is a deeply flawed project. As a Philadelphian, I say keep it where it is or, hell, move it to Camden. Millions of 76ers fans live in NJ anyhow. Oh...and those 40% driving into Center City to the arena, wow, the traffic would become apocalyptic, it's already horrible! Oh...also the arena would be built on top of the existing train station, I can't imagine the level of destruction there will be during construction.

    • @jaleelbrewer1586

      Exactly leave that shit where it is , perfectly fine over in the sports complex and that jacks up traffic even more. You can't tell me uprooting half of downtown and it's residents is cheaper than building an existing arena where it is or somewhere that won't destroy the traffic fabric of the city. If the choice is to wreck everything between 8th and 13th streets, render Jefferson Station impossoble to use, and effectively eliminate Chinatown, or move to Camden, then move to NJ. The Sixers are becoming more of a burden to the city anyhow.

    I wonder if the D.C. arena for the Wizards/Caps is the source of concerns for Chinatown? In the late 90s the owner paid for the whole arena on the edge of D.C.'s Chinatown. Nobody questions that the arena revitalized an area that had been suffering neglect since the late 60s. Despite the city working with the community to try an keep the Chinatown character, all these years later, the Chinatown arch is about the only noticeable sign of the old Chinatown.

    I know its not ideal to share an arena but if your city has an NBA and an NHL team they need to share. Having 2 separate arenas in a city is insane. “Camden is right across the river from Philadelphia” is true. But you’re ignoring the fact that overwhelming majority of the region’s population is in Pennsylvania AND that there is only one bridge between Philly and Camden. There are two more close by, the Betsy Ross to the north and the Walt Whittman to the south. But getting to a game in Camden would be a royal pain in the ass for most Sixer fans, so the threat of moving there is rather hollow. The team knows this. The major issue surrounding this project is the lack of transparency from the Sixers with the city - not ONCE has Josh Harris been at any of the public meetings and rather than manning up and being there he has clueless members of his camp going to the meetings to pander and dodge critical questions. Another element to this is the "Agreement" that Cherelle Parker "Made" with the Sixers - the belief is that majority of city council was unaware of the specifics which led to the fight and pushback over the community benefits act - also Parker gave the Sixers further assurances on Tax Breaks and not requiring them to bring back their HQ to Philadelphia which it had been here for some time at the Navy Yard. Lets Be Clear: The Sixers will NOT build affordable housing - Mark Squilla has confirmed that part of the project is scrapped - the same Mark Squilla who used this concept to rope people into supporting this project now doesn't want affordable housing...simply because his definition of affordable differs from REALITY. Also, the Sixers will NOT relocate their HQ Back to Philly as to avoid paying city wage taxes and also are not willing to go above $50mil over 30 years in community benefits. There is NO WAY Chinatown Family Businesses will survive. There is NO WAY this doesnt negatively impact traffic to and from Jefferson Hospital. @brodiebrazil Thank You for reporting on this - love the content and attention to detail as well as your unbiased view - its not easy finding reporting like this. Their headquarters moved to the practice facility in 2016 (when it opened). And of course Josh Harris isn't attending these hearings. Why would we expect him to? It has been more so for the opposition to complain to the city council about why they don't want the arena.
      What Brodie scratched the surface with is the whole "community benefits" money contribution the city is asking from the 76ers... notice how the Chinatown activists have quieted down in recent days when the team might pony up more money. This is what this whole opposition is for Chinatown. Wanting money. Let's be real here. Outside of a block or two, how much of Chinatown is really thriving without an arena? It isn't. Throwing even the highest amount of money discussed in Brodie's video is not going to be enough to transform Chinatown into this thriving neighborhood. It won't.

      So in reality - the CBA the Sixers and Cherrelle agreed on is something you’re comfortable with?? You’re fine with the team playing here but not operating here? It’s $50mil over the course of 30 Years - that’s insulting. Chinatown’s issues stem beyond the reach of a proposed arena for sure and ofcourse there’s greedy people on all sides - but let’s be real - this arena WILL erase Chinatown. If we are quick to call out Chinatown’s supporters who now want more CBA funding - let’s also be real quick to point out how IBEW wants this project passed after publicly endorsing Cherrelle for Mayor and making major campaign contributions to her before the renderings came out. Greed is everywhere in this case - unfortunately it will come at the cost of a community and its tradition unless City Council does what’s right here - nearly all of the city doesn’t want this arena. I work near Jefferson Station and this will be the WORST traffic disaster possible combined with a broken Septa system which barely manages low to normal business traffic. To me, the “process” was always a secret plan to land in NJ.

    • @flavious27
      @flavious27 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Nothing. The Wall Street owners of the team want this arena so that they can justify the huge profit that they will make when they sell the team a year after it opens. That is the whole reason that they want it. The naming rights over 20 years could be up to $300 million (matching the Warriors' deal) but likely would be closer to $150 - $200 million. That leaves $1.35 billion of the cost to build the arena. The Philadelphia market doesn't have the demand to justify two indoor arenas. On average, there might be a concert every weekend there but likely not. They could make a million or two per non-Sixer event, so $50 - $75 million (after all costs). That would get them to be at a break even point. They will have more revenue from their own games, but they have 41 home games. Any additional revenue from their games would go back towards higher players' salaries. The ROI isn't there except to get a high sales price for the team and arena.

    I feel the stadium they proposed is in a great location. Chinatown does have the tight to complain about the construction issues but that applies to any new construction in a big city. If Philadelphia is to continue to grow the downtown area is where people want to live, shop and have recreation within walking or easy public transit access. Suburban fans complain about the location but if you use the commuter train to the station that will be just behind the stadium you could not ask for better access. Train fares even round trip will most likely be less than the parking would be and will be free if the person already rides on a weekly or monthly pass. SEPTA would just have to adjust their schedules on game days to schedule return trains leaving downtown after the games end. SEPTA can do that since every New Year’s Eve they do that for the late night fireworks display. As for parking, other than a weekday daytime game there should be plenty of parking in nearby parking garages that are used less at night and weekends. I think that Chinatown is forgetting how many people will be coming to their area before and after games. They are most likely not coming now but since their stores and resturants are so close to the new stadium they most likely will experience additional business after it is built. Also if that additional housing gets built there they also will have more local year round customers nearby. All new projects affect business and residences around it. Do they forget when the center city commuter train tunnel was built years ago. The streets were torn up and detours in Chinatown happened then and Chinatown survived then as it should now. Build the stadium downtown!

    A correction to how it's being reported: it's technically not Chinatown, and it would be replacing the large mall that was rebuilt right before the pandemic. It would be a block away from one of the larger convention centers in the country. The issue is many fans are used to the convenience of the drive to the sports complex. Literally as someone who works a couple of blocks away from the site, traffic is abysmal - and it does kind of mirror those traffic back ups SF residents would see when Chase Center has events. The new arena would be closer to the interstate than the proposed Howard Terminal site. You'll see most complaints really don't care as much about Chinatown as they do the commute to events. Sixers don't want to stay in a building Comcast owns - that's what this is really about. I can't see it not passing though.

The sixers are getting no control over their schedule and improvements to their facilities since priority is given to the flyers and other events like concerts which brings more money directly to comcast spectator. Although this site has its own issues, I think the city needs to get away from the stadium district model with a sea of parking and lean more into stadiums better connected with the neighborhoods of the city.
