As Austria-Hungary wanted the use the murder of the Archduke as an excuse to invade Serbia and annex more of their lands. But Serbia was protected by Russia. Short story short the diplomats failed that month and Europe mobilized for war. As Russia was also allied to France. This war from 2 side was a nightmare for the German high command. So, Germany tried to invade trough Belgium to overwhelm the France and knock them out of the war. But Belgium was protected by the United Kingdom, so they also entered the war. After months of intense fighting the western front stalled, and both sides dug in. On the eastern front things were constantly moving. Where the Russians after some initial successes were beaten back by the Germans at Tannenberg. Russia was highly incompetent because its backwards and corrupt government. They would keep losing lands to the central powers for all following years of the war. The Ottomans (Turkish empire) joined the war months later after Nationalist groups within the navy caried out attacks on Russian ports. Italy joined the war in 1915 after been promised massive lands by the allies. The war was global because of the European empires. From Africa to Asia and the tip of Argentina, men and boats were shooting each other to pieces. Jet the main theaters were in Europe and the middle east. The bloodies of the war came from old tactics facing new technology. Europe had been at peace for the most part since the Napoleonic war, almost a century ago. As all powers had tried for decades to keep the peace and not repeat the mistakes of the past. Avoiding great power wars. So most European powers had not yet been able to develop proper ways to wage war since the industrial revolution. As most of these weapons had mainly been used against groups with inferior tech in colonial conquests or against civilians. The last real big war they learned from was the American civil war in the 1860’s.

During the war tactics and tech developed massively. Air warfare and tanks. X-rays and mustard gas. Jet even though Russia was collapsing in 1917 because of its government managed of the war. The war looked bleak for the central powers. The western front had seen many battles and millions of dead, yet the frontline had barely moved. Germany was being starved by a British blockade. Austria-Hungary was being torn apart by nationalist tensions, and the Ottomans had their ass kicked by the Arabs and the British in the middle east. Germany’s colonies had fallen to the Japanese and British, and because of Germany submarine warfare the Americans joined the war in 1917. Filling up the western front with fresh bodies. So, the Germans tried in the spring of 1918 to launch an offensive to break France. Trying to break the front line open and overwhelm the allied forces in France. Using everything they learned, with hardened troops from the east. Who became free after Russia had collapsed into a hundred different pieces. They got pretty far but failed to break the allies completely. After 4 years the war became more modern like something akin to WW2. Small unite tactics, tanks and combined arms operations. But the Germans were exhausted and starving. Their allies defeated. And because of the communist revolution in Russia its communist and socialist groups were in open revolt against the government. Many soldiers and sailors defected and threw the country into chaos. To not let the country fall into complete revolution, part of the more moderate socialists signed a pact with the army to stabilize the country. Ending the Germany monarchy and making Germany and liberal democracy. In 1919 in Versailles a peace was signed which ended the war. It had already been halted since the cease fire on 11 November 1918 but was now officially over. The war had left 10 million civilians dead, and 9.7 soldiers around the globe. Tens of millions more would die of the Spanish flu that had spread because of the war years after the peace. The word genocide was invented after the war because of what the Turks did to the Armenians during it. And medical science developed with such a massive leap never before and after seen again in history.
The war had changed the world forever. Being directly responsible for the rise of the USSR and fascist regimes in Italy, Germany and Japan, setting the stage for the next war.
