I think the sprites are great and really fit into the aesthetic of gen 1! I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of these runs in the future, and the time and effort that went into making this happen is extra impressive, kudos!
Yea, I'm going to try a Gen 9 or two run out then get to some of my personal favs. I really want to do Incineroar and some Alolan Pokemon but it might be a bit.
Normally I am a quiet Viewer but holy cow bro I am beyond impressed by the fact that you made this all by yourself. Really appreciate all ur effort in those Solo Runs.
Thanks! The Alolan Vulpix was the prototype and this one is more refined. I'll try to do these every 4 weeks or so but I'm just going to have fun with it.
The run is great but what really impressed me right off the bat is the colors. Seeing pokemon red with full specific color on all the sprites and overworld, and with the yellow sprites it looks so great
For sure. I did a race on yellow version last year after mostly playing red/blue and after a month of that, going back to it felt so washed out and bland. I originally found some color patches but for my custom roms I really wanted the yellow sprites but with the Gen 2 pallet and I think it looks great. Some are sticklers for changing the original but I mix up my patches/roms.
Props on the spritework, Matt. I love seeing new pokemon from the newer games transplanted into the games I grew up with. EDIT: Look at that backsprite! Good job, man. Looking forward to more of these.
Nice! Thank you. Yea, the goal is to put these new Pokemon in with their signiture moves and what not and let them run wild while having a vanilla game experience. Some people seem to disagree but they don't run the channel, lmao.
Appreciate that. I was just tired of not being to do exactly what I wanted. When you do a Pokemon run, especially the stronger or unique Pokemon, you want things like signature moves and everything that goes along with it. Sanqui really sucked in that regard. Like give me Dragon Rush for Garchomp or Shadow Force for Giratina, brother. I honestly have about 3,000 ideas of where to go from here but I'm dialing it back because I can't make these fast. I have an Alolan Raichu one basically complete because it was my guinea pig run so I need to do that eventually as well as finish up some sprite work on Tinkaton to look into that. Ultimately my mind races with these things. Incineroar, Greninja, Archeus, Metagross, and things like Galarian Moltres/Articuno come to mind for things I'd personally want to see.
I am checking this out from your answer to my question during the Vulpix stream. These cross-Gen runs and your egg-move runs are my personal favorite content. I just missed this one for whatever reason. I had to come check it out.
Love your videos and your nonchalant sarcasm, makes it funny. At the same time I haven’t seen many others do what you do, with the Cross Gen runs. Your Skeledirge looks great too! I think including the modern typings in Gen 1 is always a great idea, makes it “Classic” but updated with out breaking too much in the game. For your next Pokémon, I’d like to recommend Gorochu! The evolved form of Raichu, that was cut from the Gen 1 Games! Keep it up GLM!
Believe it or not I looked into Gorochu! I just couldn't find enough information to come up with anything interesting. I will be doing an Alolan Raichu run sometime in the future so that's similar. I did want Gorochu to work and maybe it is possible! Appreciate the kind words, brother.
Sorry, brother. I don't have the most time in the world. I have some runs that do that but for the most part, I do 2 or so runs off camera and get the final product. It saves me from having to weed through like 3 hours of footage and saves me a lot of time since this is just a little hobby for me.
Absolutely insane that you got this working and ITS SO GOOD. Let’s gooooo Re: bite as a dark type. Personally, I think generic moves like that that got updated typings should all be updated. I feel like rby was limited in typings and later generations added more balance with dark and fairy types (updated Pokémon types would be good too for that matter). While bite as a dark type move would have benefitted you for this run, it might body you in later runs if an enemy has it
Yea, what I didn't anticipate is that when you get to runs with new typings, there's more than just the ROM to make, lmao. I have to put in some things into my overlay data files, the mapper file I use for that, and then do an overhaul on types/moves/add the pokemon into the routing software. The next one will be more work but the good news is that it's like 90% done. As for bite, something I didn't convey well is that bite isn't a Skeledirge move. I used in place of Round because it was similar and I don't think it would be that fair. For other runs in the future that it could benefit, I just might do that. I think the point of these runs is to let the Pokemon I play run wild and keep the base game as vanilla as possible.
Thanks! I'm trying to lay the ground work to make it easier in the future but the gen 9 runs where I have to do it from scratch are harder. I've got permission to use some other gen 4, 7, 8 sprites.
the spritework is kickass, looking forward to what the future holds for these future gen runs now that you have more control over the pokemon's implementation my favorite sanqui moment is still bruno's hitmonlee slaying dialga repeatedly, that was hilarious
Smh, the main thing that's overlooked here is I have access to my live updating overlay and to my routing tools for optimization since I'm keeping 99% of the game vanilla. I would have been able to overcome that one but honestly, I had no clue about it's increased special and I didn't think I needed Flash Cannon so bad because Charizard was rocking me in practice lmao. I knew that was the run I had to keep.
I have to rewatch this. I was not ready for how insane torch song on a fire type is. Could you imagine if Skellie was really in Gen 1... the fire type we deserved. Lol Sprite looks great btw! Looks good but also uniquely "Gen 1"
Runs that aren’t Gen 9 will be infinitely more professional although I’ll still have to do the back sprites. I got permission from a crazy good artist like 2 months ago.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 As long as the videos keep coming I think everyone will be more than pleased! This channel has grown so much and your technique, overlay, and layout have really developed nicely. Can't comment enough how great everything's looking and how good the content is!
Yea outside of a tweak here and there, I’m really pleased with the overlay in this iteration, especially now that I can display effective power. I wonder if there’s a way to make the bag number less intrusive but that just helps me out a lot. Functionality, I’m happy with it
You can definitely tell the power creep since Gen 1 all the way to Gen 9, Skeledirge really proves that, also I subbed to you a while back as your videos were in my recommended. I think I subbed to you a few months ago but it could have been half a year almost time really flies and I have a hard time remembering when I came to a new channel, well anyways love your videos. Keep it up :) You're very smart being able to tamper with Gen 1 coding like that and add in some Mons from the missing files with the Gen 2 file thingy (forgot what you called it) but I know there are empty slots for Pokemon that were cut during the development, and also replacing that over Golem was also super smart! Can't wait to see more of these New Gen Crossovers with Gen 1 :D
I love the power creep. It’s interesting to see how they perform and as we get more of these ‘new’ cross Gen runs I can start a tier list and I’m excited about that. Torch song might very well be the most busted move in the game. Thanks for the support! Yea, there are tutorials and I just found a base that works for me. There are some more complicated bits but people far more knowledgeable than me help on the discord. At the end of the day I just wanted it to feel good and look good. I think the Gen 2 colors with yellow sprites give a good facelift.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Yeah I loved the Gen 2 overworld coloration as well. I know the Red Special Color Version has that and there was a Pokemon Yellow mod I recently saw that with those colors. It looks more aesthetically pleasing :) Also yeah I love seeing how well the new Mons play into Gen 1 formula, very nice demonstration, it also looks very fun and satisfying to breeze through the game with the new Gen Mons and they power creeps :D
For sure. I guess the move is a power creep but remember that Skeledirge isn't even in the top 3 of runs I've done in the vanilla games. It would be like 5th I believe but I don't have the numbers in front of me. Solid run, but it still wasn't really close to the best. My latest Alakazam stream was nutty how quick it got through the game on the optimized run. It cleared Skeledirge by like 7 minutes and it had the advantage of being playing at my leisure rather than 50ish people watching.
Power creep is real, but I think it mostly misses Skeledirge outside of Torch Song and an early Flamethrower: stat wise it is no stronger than any other Starter, and not even really optimized spreadwise given its poor Speed. Delphox or Charizard with those same options might clear RBY faster. I am with Matt in that Torch Song on Gen1 mechanics is busted. Almost Flamethrower + Calm Mind + Badge Boosts from level 1 on? The only problem would be PP management, and then only until Flamethrower.
@@travisalexander6440 We're going to see lots of Pokemon that beat this time in the cross gen side of things I feel. I got one in a couple of weeks that I think will clear it by 5-6 minutes.
I don't think many people have thought about it, tbh. Sanqui is the closest thing but they just did a very broad scrape of it with other gens and didn't specifically do things like cater to one specific Pokemon like this. They just added general moves and then used that for every Pokemon but when you get to Pokemon like Darkrai or even Ho-oh/Lugia, they just start off with non-damaging moves and defeats the purpose. Hopefully I'll get to more of these soon! It takes a little.
Ayy, finally reached your custom crossgen runs, great sprite work there. And it is really a fun angle to go for-especially with these pokémon packing a signature move or unique/interesting types. Or that would be a lot stronger with the older mechanics like Drapion rocking both cross poison and night slash (both are high crit moves).
Yea, I've learned a lot but most runs deal with psuedos/legendaries just because they get more people engaged. I did some random ones that I like personally and didn't see near the results.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Really? Man that sucks...you would expect to see less people so hyped for legendaries in 2024 and prefer to check unique pokémon from each gen but I guess some things don't change.
Yea the market for solo runs is kind of monopolized. It’s fine to do for fun but the big channels got a lock on it. You can go into their backyard and win a competition and not see any results lolz
Thanks! I do have a bit of art in my background but never spritework. It was definitely a challenge and I did like 3 designs before finding something alright.
Yea, I've been doing cross gen runs since 2021 but never anything hand made. I just got tired of it not being exactly how I wanted and with my holiday time I learned what I needed to do.
The production value jump lately is crazy. Keep it up Matt :) As for a mon i'd like to see, Maybe a Lokix or a Goodra. Or maybe even one of the new legenderies, like Chi-yu or Chien-Pao
Give in, grab the greatsword, and just use that quality build lol. I'll revisit with a new build some day but the first month of the game took a lot out of me lol. Loved it all though!
Nice. I like seeing new viewers. Yea, I can't help my accent but I work really hard at the presentation/editing and I'm always going above and beyond for optimizations and generally being a skilled player. Plus how many people are creating rom hacks just for a solo run??
meditite is my favorite pokemon, i have never seen anyone do a solo run with it. i did one years ago in emerald but it wasn't optimized at all, just me having fun. would love to see you use it in gen 1! great content man, i've enjoyed seeing the channel grow and your commentary is dope
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 i get what u mean. whether u do it or not, i'm still tuned in my G! I'm just not sure what to comment often but want to help the channel 😂
Awesome work. Did you think the 100 accuracy of torch song may have been overkill at some point? Maybe 90 would've been interesting to see since you are custom making it and providing a boost with the attack. I know sand attack and what not is a thing, but it seemed like the spc boost just was too much at some points. Just my opinion, considering there was no spc split and most if not all gen 1 water moves are special, iirc.
Nah, I don’t think it was too much. Changing the move was never on my mind. I just wanted to take the move as is and port it into Gen 1. It’s a good move and all but at this point I’m not sure if Skeledirge is even in the top 5 of fastest runs lol.
@Gym Leader Matt fair enough, surely the added text adds time on, be interesting to see exactly how much it adds on honestly. Wasn't a knock at your choice at all. It just seemed there was never really any urgency or chance for a wipe. Great work though, keep it up. Love watching your videos.
Yea all of my cross Gen runs are going to be close to the equivalent of watching an S tier normal run. Right now only 3 Pokémon are there with a couple of A+ mons behind them but yea, they are good. They better be considering the trouble it is to make everything yourself from scratch lol.
@Gym Leader Matt would be interesting to see if you could do like Victini with all its fun moveset combos. Yeah, just seeing how absurd you could make something, especially after the amount of work (surely more time then you spend in game) you did would feel nice, I can see that 🤣🤣
@@Ni_ghtmare Yea, one of the biggest problems is that me or basically no one else has been able to implement self debuffing moves yet. Things like V-Create among other things are something I'd like to be fully functional and I still try from time to time to see if I can sling some code but it's just something I'm holding off. Oddly enough, the main self stat lowering move that pops up the most is Hammer Arm. It lowers your own speed by one stage but it's a staple in a lot of things I research. But like I tell everyone. There's like 1,000 pokemon these days. I could make weekly videos for like 20 years and never get to the end even if Pokemon stopped being a thing tomorrow. I'm lucky to get out 55 videos in a year so I can't say when x or y Pokemon might happen.
Thanks for the video! I must have still been skipping all Gen 9 content back when this came out to have not seen this until now. 😭 Torch Song is ridiculous in general, but it’s straight up bonkers in Gen 1. 😂 Your custom sprites for the croco are fire, by the way. 👌🔥🔥
It really is but these days it's like not even top 15 for these runs. Great move but that extra text adds up! To this day, there are no gen 9 back sprites available lol. I wish there was because I'd like to try a Skeledirge gen 2 run! or even redo this one someday.
Yea, it's a little nutty. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing some new moves and all that go through an actual vanilla version of Red/Blue. Took a lot of work to get the game and front end to connect together with the new stuff but it's a well oiled machine now! I think I'll start designing Tinkaton soon.
Major Props! Been looking forward to these. Random idea, though: rerun some gen1 mons with later gen movesets so they aren't completely screwed over by the OG developers' moveset philosophy. Edit: Fire Types needed Torch Song since the beginning. It would have been (provably) nasty in Gen1 (or any gen, really)! I do not predict any fire type to catch Skeledirge: Torch Song is That Good (TM). Edit #2: A cross-Gen tier list would let us (and you) keep track of how well the transplants do.
I think it's nasty in competitive right now in gen 9, lol. I just like signature moves and seeing these things run wild. As for the other thought, I do some moves like that but haven't in a while. Egg move runs were something I coined like over a year ago but I am planning another one soon for Exeggutor. It's run was abysmal and we'll see if egg moves from gen 2 can change that.
I think an Annihilape gen 1 or 2 would be rad for your channel! Putting in the personal work on the back end is really cool, I didn't know how much effort all this takes, especially needing to go through the source code. Commenting twice for engagement
It's 100% on the radar. My one rule for these types of things is I need to do the regular Primape run. Right now, I'm working on some regular videos like Igglybuff, Farfetchd, egg move Exeggutor but I think the next one of these will be Tinkaton. I have the groundwork laid, I just need to finalize the numbers and the sprite. Annihilape is one that I'd be interested in for sure. I've looked at the art and tried to see how easy it would be to meld it into the R/B sprite but that's as far as I've gone. I know it's signiture move but not sure if I could implement it right.
Oh yeah I’d like to comment on the sprites. The back sprite is great tbh the only issue is it looks like Skeledirge is looking at you and not the opposing Pokémon. Granted it might be just how Skeledirge’s eyes are. It’s front sprite is good, no real issues minus the squares on the top of its mouth. They look kinda small but maybe that’s just cause I’m used to 3D models lol. I love these sprites, good job!
Thanks! Yea the translation was rough. There’s honestly not any references outside of just playing Gen 9. There’s very few official art pieces for it and it was a hassle for sure.
I can’t give you a timeline on that just yet. Things I want to do include Tinkaton, Annihilape, Codsire. Tinkaton is probably first but I will like go to some Sword and Shield mons after that unless something happens and this thing blows up. I also got my eye on some Gen 7 mons as well. Basically just doing what sounds fun.
Woow your videos are so good! I love to watch and they are so well made! I realy like that you are now making your own hack rom of the base game! (i think kk) good job! :)
Thanks! Yea it’s something I’ve wanted to do since 2021 but I just lacked the skill and understanding. I got ahead and during the holiday I figured it all out. You can learn anything on the internet these days, lol.
Hmm, I'll look into it. I need to do the original run first. Right now, I need to do Marowak, Ninetails, Magmar, Electabuzz, and now Tauros to get ready for their regional forms.
Yea I’ve had someone bring Armorouge to my attention. Armor Cannon or whatever it’s signature move is looks nutty. It’ll be a bit before I can crank out the requests but it’s funny it’s also fire/ghost. Considering Alolan Marowak is one of favs and also the same type makes think they need to be in some theme month or something.
Running the same campaign as vanilla mons is exactly what I wanted to see. Very surprised and pleased this came out so soon with the amount of modding it takes. For the more ambiguous adjustments, I lean more towards avoiding them since the alien mon suffering/enjoying the same bugs and oversights as their vanilla peers makes for a better 1:1 comparison IMO and makes them tierable (except having new moves which is part of their charm). I think Gyarados is getting Torch Songed to death
Ayy, he did get torch songed. Yea, this is really close to the vision. Got a little work getting all 4ish programs I run to record to be in sync for new types but it’s close!
Thanks! Me too. They take a little while to make so I gotta do some regular stuff between but I think it turned out as expected and that’s a good thing.
You sounded kinda self conscious about your custom sprite. It does look derpy, but it completely matches the whole game, gen 1 sprites looked hella derpy. So I feel you really captured the spirit of it and nailed it.
I wouldn't say self conscious but jesus christ is sprite work in a 56x56 square for something that doesn't have hardly any reference material a chore. I had like 3 iterations of it and I've grown to like this one. I've been messing around with Tinkaton and THAT one is a little bit of a mess for real, lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987ooof I can definitely see how Tinkaton would be hard! But like I mentioned you did a great job. Sprite art looks deceptively simple, but I absolutely know it isn’t. 😂
It's incredible how you're able to edit the game to this extent. Between you and Scott's Thoughts, you could create the ultimate gen 1-2 game. That Pokemon is super broken in gen 1, with its typing and moves lmfao
The goal like it always was with the Sanqui is finding something that's truly broken! I need more time to implement self debuffing moves but when I can use things like Close Combat, Superpower, Overheat, Draco Meteor, etc. then I will have access to a lot more runs. Specifically not being able to implement Hammer Arm in a meaningful way his holding back that sweet generation 8 Slaking learnset.
This is great. The poor movesets for some of the crossgen runs were frustrating. Excited for firegator and all the other mons you give this treatment to!
I reckon the reason why Ghost was physical in Gen I is because the only attacking move it had (where it mattered) was Lick. So they were basically just deciding if Lick was going to be a physical or special move, and physical is the obvious choice.
The main problem was that bite wasn’t on the original moveset and a replacement for round. I didn’t convey that well in the video but for some, I’ll make changes like that.
Oh also I think changing things like Bite to dark type as universal change is a fine idea, some pokemon will win from it and some will lose out but I think its fair enough. I'm sure you've added the extra pokemon types gained in future gens, which is the same thing really.
My only issue with the spritework here for skeledirge is that you didn't include the microphone birb on its nose, which is the most important part of the skeledirge! Otherwise, great job and I'm excited to see the potential of these new cross gen runs!
Yea, I really did try. You are on a 56x56 pixel grid for the front and a 28x28 on the back and it's really tight. I couldn't figure out how to make a little circle birb and it be clear what it was so I just had to scrap it. If I spend too long trying to refine it, I'd just eventually want to start over and I just wanted to get the content out! Sacrifices will be made with a very limited color pallet of basically 2 colors/black/white and such a tiny space to work with.
Zeraora might be pretty good (especially for an Electric type) in gen 1. Base stats are decent…attack and speed are high. Its learn set is really good. Power Up Punch and Snarl are great starting moves and would add a unique twist to Gen 1
Mythicals are something I slack on. Electric always has their work cut out for them. Right now they are last and near the bottom for the two I've ran. I got an electric type cooking hopefully ready for January of 2025! But hopefully I'll circle around to hit all the mythicals one day.
We've seen some very hard walls to Psychic in other Sanqui but yea this one just felt simple. It's to explain but Sanqui felt muddy and it just never felt official so I'm glad with what I've done with this one.
And as excellent as that was to see I am not sure if it was needed. I do not think we are ever going to see a mon absolutely brute-force the game as much as Skeledirge did. Torch Song into Flamethrower was all it needed for everything, including the Bane of all solo-fire runs: Lance's Gyarados. Anything else was just PP-saving or flavor, including Shadow Ball on Psychics. Even Mewtwo has to use other moves (but gets more PP to save Center trips and has much better Speed, so its finish time will still be better), and anything else with Amnesia still has to set-up first. Torch Song in Gen1 is almost like Flamethrower + Calm Mind: it would be the singular best move in the game had it existed then.
Travis I think we'll see several other runs dominate. I think some (spoilers in the future) Mega and Primal Pokemon dominate as well as something simple like Power Up Punch users. Lucario's gen 6 learnset with a medium slow leveling group is likely the most busted thing I've ever seen but I just don't have the time to do the 100 kinds of these runs. Don't worry! Skeledirge couldn't even beat Articuno or Mewtwo's times just because it wasn't super strong until it started picking up levels after rival 2. Gen 9 Groudon's learnset is also nutty without stat boosting moves but it can get Swords Dance just to make it even more absurd. The worst is yet to come, friend!
Fire ghost is such a good typing interesting to see kinda sucks that shadow ball will be physical but torch song is amazing this was my pick for scarlet I love skeledirge
I have that written down! The ‘from scratch’ ones are likely going to be much less frequent. I’ve had a ton of ideas and a ton of good ones from comments but the reality is that if I get 12 out this year, that’s good.
Yo Matt, love the content! Props for the coding man XD! What’s ur plan to keep the channel growing in 2023? Just asking to help the algo no pressure to answer but I’d def be interested to hear lol
I'm not really sure. The Raichu video did really well and that's promising. I plan on alternating between some sort of Cross Gen run when I can make them, a Pokemon Crystal run, and then some OG gen 1 videos. If I do a few good runs in a row, I'll do a pallet cleanser with a bad run. It's basically more of the same, just try to get a little more efficient and a little better at editing. I'm hoping one day that the Parasect race video comes out and I got the feeling that it might in March-May...ish. I also think Scott will do another more condensed race that doesn't last 5 weeks so my current plan is to hopefully keep grinding and get a little bit ahead so I can focus on some more quality stuff. I have a Crystal video ready for next week and Scott stepped in to help upgrade a few things in my gen 2 overlay and now I think things are set. I've been watching a lot of random content not related to Pokemon and I'd love to put a little more effort into the videos soon but we'll see! Thanks for the support, brother. I think I'll feel well enough finally to stream again on Friday! What did you think of the sprite?
The really tough thing about custom making Gen 9 stuff is that there’s very little official art and almost nothing on the back sprite. The back sprite is what makes it a nightmare.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Ghost is still physical in this rom, you said? I guess its not that interesting with its average attack, also, its ability is kinda what makes it so busted Anyway.
Liked it a lot. I'm personally not a big fan of ghost hitting psychic for super effective damage since it's part of the Gen 1 experience, especially when this mon comes with such a broken move anyway but that's maybe just me. Really nice video though, looking forward to different ones
@Gym Leader Matt that's true. Ghost types would still be good because of the million different normal type moves but ghost moves would be kinda useless aside from dealing consistent regular damage. At the end it comes down to preference and I personally prefer it to be as close to the original as possible
the ghost being physical is likely to get around the psychic type having massive special and as a result, take less damage if ghost was special too, psychics low defence makes ghost being physical more sensible. or it would if ghost wasnt bugged and they had an actual move pool in gen 1...
I can't remember, but I've said something similar in this or another video. Specifically the fact that Lick is the only damaging Ghost move and licking is a physical act. Makes sense they went that way.
I'd love to see Tropius in Gen 1. I think it could do well against just about everything except Koga and Blaine... but gets Growth for the badge boost, has no psychic weakness like other Grass types, and decent stats (except speed).
Yea, it's base stat total would be around several 1 stage evolutions like Fearow, Primape, Golbat. There's a few things that kind of go against it. The main thing is the 51 speed along with the slow leveling group. Coincidentally, I'm going to do an egg move run soon with a decent Pokemon that is also grass, in the slow leveling group, and has 55 speed. It was alright but the thing you have to think about is if Tropius would be good enough for me to push other things to the side and actually custom build the ROM for it. The gen 9 learnset starts with Leaf Storm, which is interesting but at the moment I don't have the code or tech to implement self debuffing moves for gen 1. It's something I'm going to work on sometime in the coming months and I could revisit it. There's several runs that need to utilize things like Close Combat, Hammer Arm, Overheat, Superpower, etc. and I just have to wait until I can implement that. I do think Slaking will likely get the first 'self debuff' run when that's complete though but we are talking months down the road, if it's at all possible to fit in.
@GymLeaderMatt1987 While I agree that Typhlosion and Delphox stretched it a tad, you can't deny the other 6 worked pretty well. But yeah this thing ended it and he is by far my favorite starter of Gen 9.
@GymLeaderMatt1987 I mean I build all 3 with perfect Ivs, EVS and nature's for raids and online battling but that's been my tradition since SM. Those three and the PL are some of the first I always build but the duck is my least favorite as well.
@GymLeaderMatt1987 Also I think it would be cool for the cross Gen runs to add dark (moves) like bite and maybe even add the steel type to the magnemite line and fairy type to the clefary, jiggly and mime lines to spice it up.

Yea, I'm going to try a Gen 9 or two run out then get to some of my personal favs. I really want to do Incineroar and some Alolan Pokemon but it might be a bit.
Fun fact: A "dirge" is a funeral song, so it makes sense that a pokemon with ghost-typing would have that as part of its name.
Yea, just a portmanteau of skeleton and dirge. Other languages lean on the alligator bit.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Cool, cool! I love seeing the differences in pokemon names between languages.
@@Ch3k0v It's always hit or mix for sure.
Breaking News: Trainer burns down Elite Four building with invasive species Pokemon. Calls champion a Cuk.
Smh, they don't even acknowledge him as a prior champion in gen 2. It's kind of sad.
That sprite is SO clean, I'm lovin' it!!!
Thanks! Glad you like it
Huge props on making this yourself! Can't wait to see how this goes
The sprites are so awesome!! Such awesome content!
Thanks! I’ll have some abominations in the future.
I am checking this out from your answer to my question during the Vulpix stream. These cross-Gen runs and your egg-move runs are my personal favorite content. I just missed this one for whatever reason. I had to come check it out.
The first polished cross gen run! To hell with Sanqui, even though Sanqui has shared some code with me for future stuff.
You improved a lot. Thats one of the best Pokemon-videos I have seen.
Thanks! Always trying to improve.
Dirges sprite looks cool; the more reserved palette has a distinct effect on this mon.
Less is more! The restrictions often put you in a box and allow for some unique pieces. It's kind of like Silent Hill 2 on Playstation with the fog.
Video production is much better now, overlay is great, love the new rom
Thanks! Trying to improve all aspects but being a better host and better editor will go a long way too so I’m always learning.
Very cool idea adding new pokemon. I like the sing animation for torch song over flamethrower's. Great commentary on the video too.
Yea, I didn't think too hard for the animation since it's only on about 1% of the game for a single battle though, haha.
1:31 hey that's me! also congrats on being able to make your own cross-gen roms :D
You've been chosen. 👽
This even being a thing is super duper crazy. Shout out to you Matt! Thanks for the content good sir
Follow up as I watch, I’m a bit disappointed to only get the optimized run. I enjoy seeing where the improvements happen!
Let’s gooooo
Re: bite as a dark type.
Great spirits ! And that is seriously impressive all the work you've put into this! Can't wait to see more !
Thank you so much! It might be a little month or so before I get to another gen 9 one just due to the extra work but I plan on doing Tinkaton then!
Very nice spritework, going down to 4 colors is extremely tough to pull off but you did it!
Yea the 4 color limitation is rough.
You’re amazing GLM I can’t believe you put this much work into a run!!! Can’t wait too see how fire ghost does as a typing.
Thanks! I'm trying to lay the ground work to make it easier in the future but the gen 9 runs where I have to do it from scratch are harder. I've got permission to use some other gen 4, 7, 8 sprites.
Mimikyu BROTHER! Love these runs btw, I think the sprite for Skeledirge is excellent. Perfect Gen 1 derpiness
Thanks! 😄 I think we save Mimikyu for October spooky runs along with Darkrai or something like that.
I appreciate all the effort you put in to make your videos. I don't know anything about coding some more props to you
In the age of the internet, anyone can learn anything if you put the effort in!
Haven't watched it yet but I'm really excited about this one. Such a unique concept, awesome
The first of many!
the spritework is kickass, looking forward to what the future holds for these future gen runs now that you have more control over the pokemon's implementation
my favorite sanqui moment is still bruno's hitmonlee slaying dialga repeatedly, that was hilarious
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 sorry, those are good points too and i remember noting them but I didn't get that across in my comment
@@LightningLiger It's all good!
YOOOOO Seriously these cross gen runs are crazy fun
Hope you enjoyed it!
I love the new content. I appreciate your hard work, Matt!
I appreciate that! Thanks.
I have to rewatch this. I was not ready for how insane torch song on a fire type is. Could you imagine if Skellie was really in Gen 1... the fire type we deserved. Lol
Sprite looks great btw!
Functionality, I’m happy with it
Man, I love Torch Song.
It’s such a good move. It’ll be a while before I find something I like better I’m sure.
Keep it up :)
You're very smart being able to tamper with Gen 1 coding like that and add in some Mons from the missing files with the Gen 2 file thingy (forgot what you called it) but I know there are empty slots for Pokemon that were cut during the development, and also replacing that over Golem was also super smart!
It looks more aesthetically pleasing :)
Also yeah I love seeing how well the new Mons play into Gen 1 formula, very nice demonstration, it also looks very fun and satisfying to breeze through the game with the new Gen Mons and they power creeps :D
Amazing work and this gets me thinking imagine if smogon did a gen 1 national dex mode.
Love the sprite work on skeledirge
Thanks! I do have a bit of art in my background but never spritework. It was definitely a challenge and I did like 3 designs before finding something alright.
Super cool concept! I’ve looked into doing this myself for some games but fun to see others do it!
Yea, I've been doing cross gen runs since 2021 but never anything hand made. I just got tired of it not being exactly how I wanted and with my holiday time I learned what I needed to do.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 looks awesome! Keep it up, can’t wait to see more
Tinkaton’s next but it’ll take me about a month to get to finalizing it on top of making other videos.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I love Tinkaton! That’s awesome
The production value jump lately is crazy. Keep it up Matt :)
As for a mon i'd like to see, Maybe a Lokix or a Goodra. Or maybe even one of the new legenderies, like Chi-yu or Chien-Pao
Goodra is one of my favs! From a ‘this will be sneaky good’ perspective, Rabsca looks really good.
I love this Skeledirge sprite. Embodies the essence of Gen1
25:04 also yeah F Gyrados
All my homies hate Gyarados. Glad to see a fire type wreck it. I was just glad everything worked.
I’m still riding out a V. Quality bleed proc Elden Ring Play-through.
Give in, grab the greatsword, and just use that quality build lol. I'll revisit with a new build some day but the first month of the game took a lot out of me lol. Loved it all though!
Danny Devito lookin a$$ 🤣 great work Matt! Love seeing newer creators and how they do things differently.
Just meditite? Medicham looks interesting but overall a little weak for the effort of custom making everything haha.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 i get what u mean. whether u do it or not, i'm still tuned in my G! I'm just not sure what to comment often but want to help the channel 😂
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 and also, respect on making the rom and the sprites! that's dope as hell
Ha, brother I tell you what to comment for that situation every video in the first minute or two lol.
Love it. Like the zoom in
At the start? It's a throwback.
Your custom sprites for the croco are fire, by the way. 👌🔥🔥
It really is but these days it's like not even top 15 for these runs. Great move but that extra text adds up!
To this day, there are no gen 9 back sprites available lol. I wish there was because I'd like to try a Skeledirge gen 2 run! or even redo this one someday.
Great vid. I love Skeledirge so I really enjoyed watching you use it in Gen 1.
Glad you enjoyed! Yea it was a fun one to play.
1st: holy shit, that is an impressive sprite work my dude.
2nd: aw yeah, croc boy gonna smash!! well... special smash!!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 that im looking forward too, it’s got such an interesting attack, insane power but you have to use another move afterwards.
Rather than make that new effect and struggle with coding it in, I'll probably make it a Hyper Beam clone since it's very similar.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 and its likely to OHKO anyway soooo.... :)
240 effective power with STAB. Tbh, I just want to hit Jynx with it.
This might be my favorite thing, I love this Pokemon so much!
Glad you like it!
Putting in work Matt! Keep doing what you do! Great new content 👌

I can’t wait to see the other two starters and your sprite is dope and the fact it looks good from the back as well 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I can’t give you a timeline on that just yet.

I think water tauros would be amazing as the only thing holding kantonion tauros back I feel is the rock types until earthquake is available
Hmm, I'll look into it. I need to do the original run first. Right now, I need to do Marowak, Ninetails, Magmar, Electabuzz, and now Tauros to get ready for their regional forms.
i LOVE your skeledirge. such a funny face! full of character!
Thanks! This was iteration 3. Fitting that gator into a 56x56 box was a struggle.
Super cool seeing newer pokemon in gen 1. Armorouge or ceruledge would be cool to see too
Yea I’ve had someone bring Armorouge to my attention.
Let's go! Your vids and commentary are hilarious and awesome. I love non Gen 1 Pokémon in gen 1.

Man, that run was Torcher.
A torcher and a song.
@@pandoravex4791 It's going to be a TinkaTON of fun. I'll probably start the eventual video with that line lmao.
Yea, wish I had some of those signature moves for things like Giratina and Dialga for sure.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 also I forgot to ask-- was Torch Song strong???
Super strong. Self buffing damaging moves are crazy in gen 1.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 not to critique, but you probably should have mentioned that a few more times in the vid ;)
Haha, if you knew the pain of how hard it was to get a new effect to work with a move, you'd mention it too.
I reckon the reason why Ghost was physical in Gen I is because the only attacking move it had (where it mattered) was Lick. So they were basically just deciding if Lick was going to be a physical or special move, and physical is the obvious choice.
For sure. I could have sworn I almost said the exact sentence in the video at some point but maybe not.
Love this run!
The OG cross gen.
I agree with the bite change. Since you added the other types in anyway.
The main problem was that bite wasn’t on the original moveset and a replacement for round. I didn’t convey that well in the video but for some, I’ll make changes like that.
Not gonna lie to you Matt... But this sh*t is f**kin dope. Keep up the good work dawg 🤘😎

Oh also I think changing things like Bite to dark type as universal change is a fine idea, some pokemon will win from it and some will lose out but I think its fair enough. I'm sure you've added the extra pokemon types gained in future gens, which is the same thing really.
I definitely did. Got the full base. In fact the next cross Gen run is steel/fairy type.
Your Skeledirge sprite looks nice, though our flame-croccy boy looks a bit sad. XD
I was going for the 'I'm over it' look.
"The screams of the hitmonchans." LOL
Just have to close your eyes and ignore it, lol. Another week, another Bruno.
Honestly that sprite looks pretty freaking good.
Thanks! Appreciate that!
If one Pokémon is made for 17:52 TOMBSTONER BROTHER, then it's Skeledirge
I always think Garchomp. Hell, I even named it tombstoner that run haha.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 but that krok is a literal ghost and your front sprite looks blazed af.
Ha, I’m proud of that sprite. I’ve begun some work on Tinkaton and that sprite looks…wonky.
A ghost type that isn't weak to psychic with shadow ball in gen 1 is going to be nuts
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 oh pls give me the most busted thing imaginable. Mewtwo has ruled gen 1 long enough!
I haven't played Scarlet/Violet yet but now I know which starter to choose.
They are all actually pretty good!
Kanto was not ready for the gen 9 power creep
Also the back Sprite is pretty damn good.
It was a good opener to a series like this. I think people will be shocked at how many more can dominate this time.
Fire ghost is such a good typing interesting to see kinda sucks that shadow ball will be physical but torch song is amazing this was my pick for scarlet I love skeledirge
All you can do is play it out and it did pretty well!
I'd love to see a Hisuian Zorua/Zoroark run in Red sometime! I think its unique typing would be very interesting in a solo run.
I have that written down! The ‘from scratch’ ones are likely going to be much less frequent. I’ve had a ton of ideas and a ton of good ones from comments but the reality is that if I get 12 out this year, that’s good.
New viewer, love this concept~
Thanks! I'm trying to expand upon it. I think it's a neat and fun concept.
Sprite is hype 🔥🔥🔥back sprite is better than 90% of gen 1 back sprites lmao
I'd love for someone redesign them all. I'm don't have the time but it would be cool lol.
Gholdengo would be interesting, incredible typing, also incredible special attack.
Yea, no abilities and ghost/steel are physical typings before the split.
Best gen9 starter! I absolutely love the backsprite. Front sprite is growing on me.
Thanks! It was the first one I ever did. Nowadays I’m improving or getting more talented people’s sprites to save me some time.
Keep up the great work
Thanks, will do!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 your welcome
Liked it a lot. I'm personally not a big fan of ghost hitting psychic for super effective damage since it's part of the Gen 1 experience, especially when this mon comes with such a broken move anyway but that's maybe just me.
Really nice video though, looking forward to different ones
Fair enough! There would just be absolutely zero reason to use Shadow Ball or bother with the time to code it in, imo.
@Gym Leader Matt that's true. Ghost types would still be good because of the million different normal type moves but ghost moves would be kinda useless aside from dealing consistent regular damage. At the end it comes down to preference and I personally prefer it to be as close to the original as possible
I don't mind seeing ghost kill a psychic type like 2-3 times a year.
the ghost being physical is likely to get around the psychic type having massive special and as a result, take less damage if ghost was special too, psychics low defence makes ghost being physical more sensible.
or it would if ghost wasnt bugged and they had an actual move pool in gen 1...
I can't remember, but I've said something similar in this or another video. Specifically the fact that Lick is the only damaging Ghost move and licking is a physical act. Makes sense they went that way.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 its gen1, everything is busted and weird :D
That's why I love it!
"Burning people, he says what we're all thinking!"
Cave Johnson?
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Yes! I mean, actually, GLaDOS simping for him
Lmao, I tell myself I'm going to replay both 1 and 2 but it's been a minute. Some of the best of all time!
Shadow ball has 80 base power
Edit: Oh, stab
Yep. Listed on the learnset but my moves have effective power, including stab and type effectiveness.
Ah Skeledirge, the fire starter that broke the zodiac theory.
Brother, they've been stretching that theory for like 10 years.
@GymLeaderMatt1987 While I agree that Typhlosion and Delphox stretched it a tad, you can't deny the other 6 worked pretty well. But yeah this thing ended it and he is by far my favorite starter of Gen 9.
The cat has grown on me some but I absolutely hate the duck.
You da king of cross gen
Everyone else is imitating. 👑
Torch Song is just too powerful LOL
Very powerful move but still not enough for the top spot.
