- Dr. Ann Lemke plays the same scale on the oboe, oboe d'amore and English horn. They all use the same fingering, and are all double reed instruments, although the reeds are different sizes. The English horn and oboe d'amore have an egg-shaped bell and a bocal.

@@RockStarOscarStern634yes, tenor oboe is a better name because bass oboe is a misnomer (that would actually be an oboe in F below the cor anglais), but everyone knows it as a bass oboe. Bret Newton will not be able to change this
@@somebody9033 The real Oboe in F an Octave below the Alto Oboe would be a Baritone so the true Bass Oboe would be in C 2 Octaves below the Soprano Oboe, etc.
@@RockStarOscarStern634 Depends whether a family of instruments uses the word baritone or not. Saxophones do, recorders don't, most other families forget about logic and overlook tenor completely.
I played the oboe throughout middle and high school. While in high school I had the opportunity to play the English horn for a few pieces. I loved it. And I have always wanted to try my hand at the oboe d’amoré. Unfortunately I have no oboe any more and I am back to flute but I have a goal of purchasing one in the future.

Oboe d'amore is quite rare. English horn is the heaviest of the 3.
In simpler terms, this would be C Soprano Oboe, A Mezzo-soprano Oboe, and F Alto Oboe. Bret Newton came up with that based on the range.

@@lemkestudio Yes based on the Basic Vocal Ranges so that means the True Tenor Oboe would be an Octave below the Standard Oboe etc. The Highest pitched Oboe is the F Sopranino but I want to go even higher to the High C Super Piccolo Oboe (an Octave above a Regular Oboe) which would require a Harmonic reed or something like that.
I've always wondered what an oboe d'amore sounded like. That was beautiful, I loved it.

As a F. Horn player I love the E. Horn.
People confuse them all the time, since E. horn isn't English or a horn!
@lemkestudio I propose we go back to the original High German: Engellisches Horn or the modern German: Engleshorn.
Alternatively, Silesian Horn would also work, if we're going to go with place names.

That would make sense to me!
It would make more sense to call it an Alto Oboe considering it is more of an alto instrument. Some composers, like Wagner, have called it that way in the past.
Clarinets is just lopsided, asymmetrical double reeds.

clarinets have one piece of wood for the reed, making it a single reed and the oboe has two pieces of wood (cane) which makes it a doubbbble reed

Is it recommended to switch from oboe to English horn? I’ve been wondering for a while.
I have no idea but I play an oboe and for marching band I have to switch instrument but I’m trying saxophone and it is pretty easy to switch to so if you are switching for marching band I would recommend Flute,clarinet,saxophone

I've been interested in learning English Horn for a long time. Where would you say is the best place to rent one
That's great that you want to learn English horn. Midwest Musical Imports rents them, and a few other places also turn up with a quick search of "English horn rental". Some community orchestras and bands own them for their oboist to borrow.
theres infact 3 other sizes Piccolo/mussete mussete is the name for the eb instruments and piccolo if for the ones in f though they both are in the size catagories of sopranino the othere 2 sizes are the bass oboe wich insnt even a bass its nore of a tenor or baritone comprising of the narrow bore loree style and wide bore Heckelphone and lupophone wich is a Heckelphone with a bassete extension and the one that no one knows about wich is a an oboe an octave below the english horn in f as far as we know only 3 were ever made due to there only being 3 pictures that exist they were made by mollenhaur and only went to low C and used a sytem of keywork comprising of 12 keys in total they were made some time in the mid 1900s unfortunately only 2 have a good chance of still existing and there isnt any recordings

I've had many students who switched from clarinet to oboe, but I've never heard of anyone switching from oboe to clarinet.

They are actually verrrrry different
For starters, clarinet is a single reed instrument in Bb and oboe is a double reed instrument in C - oboe is also a lot for difficult to play than clarinet (I've played both, but I mainly play oboe and English horn in highschool)
Go for it tho, learning oboe is awesome (start with the "normal" oboe and then learn others in the future

Musical instrument, no such thing as a single reed musical instrument
The clarinets and saxophones are commonly known as single reed instruments.
There is also no such thing as a single lip embrouchere. All clarinet embrochures use two lips.
The reed itself is just oneeee piece of wood (making it a single reed)
For oboes and bassoons, it has twoooo pieces of wood (making it a double reed)
The reed is the wood not the lip placement (the two come hand in hand tho)
