It's been said that forgiveness is not only for the person that hurts you, but more for you to continue to move on. Being the "bigger person" has nothing to do with height or weight.
No one has ever sounded like Todd Rundgren. His melodies, his rhythms are like no one else's. And no one has ever mined the emotions of a lost relationship the way this song does. Still relevant after all these years. That defines a classic.
If you ever seen Todd in concert back in the day , he was a total FREAK. A strange looking guy that played bizzare music. Most young people only no " Hello it's Me. "
I’ve performed this song since I first fell in love with it when it came out. I think there’s nothing quite like it. It very honestly expresses the hopeless wish for one ex-partner to retain something of a relationship and, very likely, for the other ex, the hopeless wish for a return to a love that is forever gone. Of course the deeply sad answer to the question is “No.“ And, as a composer and musician, the way the melody sits in the harmony, almost detached and lost, is incredibly poignant and matches the sentiment perfectly. Almost every note of it is an unresolved suspension yearning for a resolution that will never come. I know of no other piece of music that captures this tragic and all too common occurrence so genuinely. It is written from the point of view of the person who is breaking up with somebody else. And you can hear the sorrowful, gentle and comforting way they are trying to let the other person down as empathetically and carefully as possible. But, of course - it’s not possible. Why is it that two people can get as close as any two human beings can get, and then, when it falls apart, never be able to speak with or show any affection to each other ever again? It is as if to “fall in love’ is to always risk this cruel trap of fate: to be cast out forever from the warmth of love into the arctic of loneliness. Todd, you captured it perfectly, and thank you for that.
so PERFECTLY and BEAUTIFULLY analyzed and shared! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us. The words and music haunt SO MANY of its listeners and it's nice to know from your well-expressed reaction to both that we all share a major commonality in this song. heartfelt thanks for your words!
Beautiful. The saddest song I have ever heard. I have to give it a big thumbs up in spite of this sentiment. Thought provoking, moving and very inpiring. People who are not moved by this have no heart or compassion.
@@deborahburdette7146 Let’s hope so. It sickens me that he and others like Carole King haven’t been in for years. Those two I’ve named have more musical talent collectively (not to mention being great people) than 98% of the current members put together as one.
He is giving a show in the area at the time of the ceremony but says he won’t attend. He says he will stop the show and do a remote link to accept the honor. He has pretty much always despised the rock hall but says he will accept because he knows his fans so badly want this honor for him. So he will accept for his fans.
Todd Rundgren is indeed the total package. His talents musically can leave u in awe. IMO, this is by far his best song bcuz it is put together so beautifully that it achieves to communicate the raw emotion & pain that we have all felt in relationships. Although I believe most people would rather not re-live the memories of lost love & insist on healing & just looking fwd. Although I totally understand this way of coping, I completely disagree. And every time I hear this song, I let it take me by the hand & bring me to revisit the memories of lovers from my past. And I feel fortunate that I was able to maintain a friendship w/most of my past lovers. I always insisted on staying friends w/these women bcuz that's just the way I'm built. Just bcuz a relationship fails doesn't mean I can just undue my love for a woman. That's something I can't turn off. It stays deep within me & it is eternal. I made sure that every woman I ever loved understood that about me. And regardless of how bitter our break-up might have been, I cherish the opportunity to still be a part of their lives.
I was so glad to see Todd for the 1st time just over a week ago in Dallas. Though his voice was hurtin it was still great to be a part of that evening.
Todd was a "different cat" from day 1, He always however, wrote from the HEART! Something that's sorely missed in today's music(use that word loosely). This song is still a classic! How many of today's "hits" will stand the 40 yr. test of time? A
Genius song...lyrics, melody, & chords. Also the keyboard method for the verses are genius as they teeter of those same 2 chords while the bass walks down. Brilliant. Beautiful & tearfully sad song.
sugarbear2753 OMG!!!!! I looooove this song!!! So beautiful and sad. Todd's vocals are unbelievable. The background la la las are so ethereal. Today's so-called music can't hold a candle to this!! A classic!!! Thank you for posting this!!!!
The one great thing you can hope for is friendship when it ends...Some cannot weather a storm when you have bad things going on so ,maybe at least friendship. Can we still be friends Marc?
"Vanilla Sky" is a very under-appreciated movie; interesting character interaction, good lines, great sound-track, interesting visuals and the stunning Penelope Cruz. I love the way Penelope says: "I'm a dental assistant." and "Not bad at all." I also love what Julie says to David in the car before she crashes it: "Don't you know that when you sleep with someone, your body makes a promise whether you do or not?!" If more people today understood this we'd have a lot fewer problems in our culture

This got me through many a rough time. My favorite Rundgren song is Hello It's Me. Have left it one answering machine's to see how well people know me.
In fact, I just subbed to your channel because you totally captured the feeling of the song in the middle with the 'stark empty cold barren' landscape visual. Excellent work interpreting the feeling
This is just such a perfect song. The song is generally assumed to be about Rundgren's breakup with long-time companion Bebe Buell in 1977. Buell was famous for dating popular musicians. She is the mother of Liv Tyler after having a brief relationship with Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler.
Yes Kim we can still be friends. Time and healing needed right now, but we will come out the other side as friends for all time. Kindest regards and Much love.
A Great Sound Quality Upload of a GREAT Song! Great Video with Todd Rundgrens Great Lyrics ! You did absolutely Great for me and many Todd Rundgren Fans cyberman000051 ! Thank You !
Special to me, as I did a favor for Big Steve of New Paltz- now deceased- and put test miles on Todd's Lotus Espirit., for Steve's family B.M.W. dealership. Great car; greater MUSICIAN: I sang HIS songs, in his MACHINE! And, I have chops...Vocals and 6 speed . Bearsville, "Little Bear"... I miss it all: timeless Todd Rundgren !!! Todd's music filled the dorms at Stony Brook University (along w/the "Brothers"), in the years I spent there. The soundtrack of our lives...FOREVER!
wow ang malupit na uploader ng youtube gumana na naman ang pagiging mr romantico. hehehe. dati ko na rin naririnig ang sa radio ang kantang 'to kaya pamilyar na ako. great post again utol.
Note that Todd Rundgren played ALL instruments and sang ALL vocal parts on this track. Pretty amazing.
Love this song
Ditto ❤

Made me cry 49 years after the first cut, 😢 😭 the deepest.
One of the most profound and beautiful songs I’ve ever heard -thank you Todd
Todd, you created a memorable, moving, masterpiece! God bless you forever!
Remembering someone who no longer remembers me 😪
Wow.......that's a helluva analogy, I'm grateful for the perspective.
Todd is a genius what great lyrics this song makes me cry every time I hear it

You just don't feel the heart anymore like the old days. Can't be touched today
Memories of old lovers never completely go away...i hope they never do.
Todd is genius ! And Genuinely a kind person & musician who finally was finally given recognition. I adore 🥰 him !!!!!

@@elizabethreed5648 Thanks. These thoughts are totally from my heart. Some works of art capture their subject perfectly. This is one of them.

when you talk about Todd Rundgren , you're talking about a legend .
This song could be put on the radio today and become a hit all over again.- God gets you in the heart every time....

It's a song of pain, but also of hope ... and it is truly outstanding...
A bit of advice to anybody in this situation...walk away! Do not be friends with the other person. The pain will be inevitable and everlasting!
God I get so melancholy for my youth when I hear this music. It seems a world away and life was sooooooooo easy!
This song is pure genius, turns me to goo every time
I get to hear it. Thank you cyberman!
what make Rungren brilliant is this could have been the most sugar pop song but it is not, it is deep and sophisticated will still highly emotional.
This song is eternal
How is this guy not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when Janet Jackson and Ricky Nelson are?? It’s criminal!!
He's finally about to be! Next upcoming ceremony - way overdue.

Reminds me of this girl that rejected me but not a day goes by were I don’t think of her she’s gone now.😢

Todd Rundgren is the total package when, it comes to music!
Clayton139 Agreed. Now, if the people who vote for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees would realize this truth.
Clayton139 -Todd Rundgren and Brian Wilson are two of the greatest American composers of the 20th and 21st Centuries.

Haunting, deep, sad & hopeful. The scene in Vanilla Sky was SO intense because of this song. It gave me chills
It's that feeling of her not having the same feelings even though you know it won't work
Just went through that after 5 years. Acquaintances now, not entirely friends. She still lives next door. I'm ok though having woken up.
Inspiring lyrics ..Still listening to his song..Thanks Todd.
