I came here solely because he was in the thumbnail. Warms my heart that (while he's technically only third in the credits) his name is *way* bigger than the two theoretical leads. Somebody knew where the real draw was.
Mantan should listed first on this or any film he appeared in. He was a comic GENIUS.

I’ve watched this movie about 30 times and I can certify, it’s cinematic perfection.
Mantan should have gotten top billing in this movie, he really made it. I'm happy that he had such a productive career in show biz and trust he was well-compensated.
@Humphrey Hogan if we watch these movies with the eyes of today,they would all be awful.There are women who wonder how I can watch 30s/40s movies all the time,because of the way they were portrayed,always looking for rich husbands.We can't change the past,sadly. Mantan Moreland was a great comedian which is why he makes us laugh.Lou Costello in the Abbot & Costello movies was the same type of character as Mantan.The old movies also made people more away of some music greats like Cab Calloway.Im german,how do you think I feel about how germans were portrayed? and really,to this day,the Irish are still portrayed as drunks,the Italians are always mafia.Even in ths "new age"of ours where there are gay men in shows,they are usually flaming whiney queens.It just is what it is,and was what it was.

This movie is from 1941 in full segregation time there was no other opportunities for a black actor.
It is not much better these day so imagine 80/90 years ago.

I have no idea why I love this movie so much. Probably have watched it 10 times or more. Mantan just steals every scene he is in. How can a character be racist when he is so much smarter than the cardboard heroes? Every line he utters is at least amusing... "Can I help it if I's loquatious? "
I would love to recommend this one to movie reactors, but doubt if they could see past the political incorrectness. Which is a bit odd, if this was intended for an urban black audience.
The racism of the era made it hard for Mantan to have the career he deserved, but the man was a master of comic timing and I think he's probably doing some brilliant bits of improv in this film. People who reject him because his characters were stereotypes miss the point: he was a big success and a star despite of all that and turned the tables on the system.
Agreed. He certainly deserved better, but he did an amazing job with the limited scope of roles that Hollywood would give him in the era.
@@richmcgee434 Yes, the people comparing Mantan to Amos and Andy are way off the mark. White actors using black face and ebonics to mock blacks comically and make money are not the same thing as a talented black actor trying to get roles and survive in the racist Hollywood system of that era.

Don't you just love the soft core racism from the '40s. I'm just old enough to know that this wasn't viewed as racist back then but it couldn't be created today because it's completely racist. The most valuable currency of an artist is truth.

One of my all time favorite horror comedies. I think this movie should be remade just to see how it might work out.

i got this one on DVD , it came with a T shirt . Marguerite Whitten( Samantha ) & Mantan Moreland ( Jeff ) are awesome together , not in the so bad its good way , but in the really really good way

“Move over boys I’m one one of the gang now” 🤣 I suppose this is what in the UK was called a quickie quota. Enjoyable way to while away an hour or so.
When you have the money and the control over the movie industry and media you can portray people anyway you want the public audience to see them as.
Money tends to keep people in their place. I'm guessing it keeps you in your place...slaving away for the man rather than organizing a riot because life isn't fair. Ex-slaves were still alive when this movie was made. Ending slavery was a very scary time. The racism in this movie exposes the fear that existed on both sides of the race fence. Casting so many black people back then would have been an outrageously liberal thing to do. The white actors probably took some heat from being part of this movie. The last people to admonish during this time is the film industry because they were the only people offering help and they actually changed things. Others offered mostly field work which wouldn't have changed anything.

I love how the black guy in the thumbnail is obviously the butler, and he's the only one with the sense to be scared crazy by what's happening. Some tropes never die, people just change the way they're interpreted. 😉
he isnt the buttler. he comes with the crew that he becames buttler in the castle is his *taking place* in society, back then where black had no rights.
