    Hey brother question for you. When the fan turns on to cool down the inside does that break the seal of the freezer?

    • @FlockensNekroparlor
      @FlockensNekroparlor  ปีที่แล้ว

      The freezer is not sealed because of the two slightly insulated holes. When the fan blows air in, some blows out the hole on the other side.

    Nice enclosure. I was trying to find a good example to follow, and you seem to be one of the best around. One question though, what is that brown spongy looking thing on the left side?

    Hey there! I'm wondering how or if you clean the freezer, and if so, how often?

      Hello! I just received a question about this, and thought it would be a good video to make! Unfortunately I'm probably a few months away from cleaning to make that video, but in the meantime, the answer is-
      You clean it when it needs to be cleaned! While I put an inch or two of substrate down, the beetles will 'make' their own substrate with molted skins and frass. Some say the deeper the frass, the better, but after 6 inches or so there is no benefit. So, essentially, once there is 6 inches of solid beetle poop, it's time for a change out.
      Cleaning can be really simple, or really complicated, depending on what percentage of your colony you want to save. There are always hidden larva and eggs in the old substrate so if you just throw it out you'll lose a lot of potential workers.

      Great question! My colony is a mixture of Dermestes maculatus and Dermestes ater. When I did this video they were pretty much 50/50, but the maculatus out compete the ater, so now it's more like 95/5.

      @@FlockensNekroparlor I'm studying all the family Dermestidae and right now I'm breeding Dermestes ater, Trogoderma sp. and in the past I had in bredding Dermestes undulatus, Dermestes frischii, Attagenus smirnovi... they're really curious!
      Nice videos!

    I just created an enclosure very similar to this one. One question I do have is what settings do you use for your humidity regulator. I have an Inkbird humidity regulator and haven’t quite figured it out yet.

    • @FlockensNekroparlor
      @FlockensNekroparlor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Over 50% and you can run into condensation or mite issues. I keep mine under 40% to be safe.
      Also, under 10-15% and your meat and beetles will dehydrate a lot faster. Your beetles will eat eggs for their moisture, and under 10% the eggs will dessicate completely leaving you with large generation gaps.
      I live in a desert so low humidity is one that I struggle with. Unfortunately I don't have any sort of automatic humidifier connected to the humidistat, so I just have to manually water or mist when I notice that it's low.
