Thanks for this. I will skip ahead. I literally live across from a Five Paychecks and I do like their food but it's expensive, yes.
I used to love Five Guys but the prices have gotten so crazy where I live that it's cheaper to go to an actual sit-down, family-owned restaurant. 🤷
That's because five guys have to make one burger!

Why cant they be a competitor? I mean they're supposed to be "the king of burgers", right?

Yeah but I call bullshit, I can go to a local spot with farm fresh beef and get a burger and fries for 10 dollars or less.

In my town a Five Guys shares a parking lot with In-N-Out. There's usually 15+ cars in the drive through of In-N-Out and a full dining room. I've never seen more than a car or two parked in front of Five Guys. I have no idea how they are still there
Living in the midwest, I knew that Five Guys wasn't going to last long in our area. We have plenty of mom and pop hamburger joints that are able to keep their prices reasonable and their food is top notch. I wasn't surprised when the one that opened nearby closed after less than two years.
$15 for one fast food burger, or...
...make 4x burgers myself at home for $10
Well yeah, but time is money. You could cook all that for 30 min to an hour and deal eith clean up, or spend your time on a recreational activity instead. Or work more. Whatever your goal is.
@@xSintexI think these days people are seeing that prices are so high that they’d sacrifice time and convenience (arguably you don’t lose much of neither) so they can have some of the things they want and stay within their means. I certainly have. To each their own

It's not a fast food burger, it's fresh with real ingredients
No you can't, stop lying.
The first time I took my dad to Five Guys, he looked at the menu and said he wanted large fries. I was like, no dad, you want a little fry. I told him to trust me on that. Even then he couldn't finish them all.

This could be completely BS but I've heard that the "little" is a marketing gimmick because no one wants to go in and order a "little" burger, they want the regular burger even though the only difference is one or two patties.

One reason for the expensive price of their burgers is simple: You are paying for the option to have as many toppings as you want on the burger/hot dog. It's included in the price.
(Toppings include according to their menu: Mayo, Lettuce, Pickles, Tomatoes, Grilled Onions, Grilled Mushrooms, Ketchup, Mustard, Relish, Onions, Jalapeno Peppers, Green Peppers, Bar-B-Que Sauce, Hot Sauce, A1 Sauce)

Although it do treat my self with some fuddrockers since I am lucky I do have one close by and their burgers are banging!
I'll spend the extra $6 on something I'll eat. Then again, I make most of my burgers at home.
I find Five Guys to be very hit or miss. Some days you come in and get a great burger and you don't mind the price. Other times, the burger is super bland. I avoid it because even if you were lucky that day, all you got was a burger worth what you paid for it.
Just to be clear, I never got a bad burger. But if I am paying B+ prices, I want a B+ burger, not a D+.
The "extra" french fries is a psychological marketing ploy. They just put a regular serving in a small cup and dump the rest in the bag so people feel like they're getting their moneys worth.

First time I heard of 'em, I figured this had something to do with meat... but I had no clue it was in a restaurant-y way.
The burgers aren't bad but I honestly don't care about their dedication to fresh food at a price point above everyone else. I can go to a local bbq place and get a half pound burger with pulled pork and turkey on it for less than I can get a fast food burger? Sometimes places need to start failing to learn that what works at a single location doesn't work as a national brand. Also, their burgers get 'soggy' extremely fast causing it to taste worse than a basic fast food burger if you don't eat it fast enough. Living in a place without access to In N Out I was wanting them to succeed, but instead am left wishing for a further expansion of In N Out...
Best damn burger in the fast food realm. And so far the only fast food place in America that knows what malt vinegar is.
Greasiest burgers I've ever had. A higher fat content means lower meat content which means they're cheaping out on you.
@@dannydaw59 Thats not a downside to me. Burgers are a treat and the fat is where the flavor is! Shit I'd pay extra for a McDonalds burger that had some actual grease to it. But to each their own.
@@andrewgraham2546 I wouldn't. McDonald's burgers suck. I think if they were more greasy, I'd vomit in eating.
I was just having an email discussion with my mom yesterday as she lives in Los Angeles and I'm in Vegas, and we were talking about how fast food in general is way over priced. And while I brought up Five guys as being rather expensive, it was also on the very short list of me NEVER having an issue with their food. Carl's Jr, Chick Fil A, Arbys, all these place charge nearly as much as Five Guys(more in some cases) and the food sucks 9 out of 10 times(cold fries, stale buns, dry patties, etc).
This wasn't so much an issue when 3 or 4 people could eat for 20-30 dollars, but now 2 people are easily over 30, maybe even 40 for "fast food", WTF!? Hellscape are we living in? Is Five Guys expensive, YES, no question, but the food it always fresh, you get tons of fries and everything taste great(IMO). Same for In N Out, they aren't as expensive(2 people can still eat for near $20), but the food is always fresh and love it or hate it, good value for the price. These other places are pricing themselves out of existence and if they cared just a little about food quality, people might not mind the higher prices.
Really!! In AZ and I looked up prices. A Double Carl, which is pretty big Double Cheeseburger ay Carl's Jr. is $7.99. A Cheeseburger at Five Guys $11.39. Your right. Same exact price not.
I was just in San Diego and I had a little sticker shock that’s for sure. But Vegas is also expensive. I haven’t eaten at Carl’s Jr or Arby’s in years, even Jack in the Box is turning me off. They are all beginning to taste the same. I hate Chick-fil-A’s fries, and although I go for the sweet tea, it’s also bland. I haven’t been to 5 Guys in a while, mostly because it doesn’t have a drive thru and very limited parking (although it does share the lot with Yogurtland), which is a bonus). When I went to KS, it seemed cheaper but where I went didn’t have a lot of choices for fast food. Maybe we should eat at home.

Over 10 years ago when they opened their franchise in SoCal I also said the same thing when I first walked in. $5 for a single burger when I could spend about $2 more for a combo at In N Out.
"They don't have any freezers in any of their locations." Wait, then how do they store the ice cream for milkshakes?
The issue with Five Guys is while it is good quality for a burger, there is still 0 reason for me to ever go there when I can get an actual meal from any local sit down restaurant for the same price. Most restaurants still offer carryout as an option as a remnant from the lockdowns.
Their fresh fries also suck. Just nasty.

My local Five Guys isn't that great but I'm pretty sure it's a franchise, not a corporate store. The floors were sticky the last time I went in, the service is much slower than I'm used to, and - while $10.29 for a gourmet burger in my area seems reasonable, nearly $7.00 for an order of fries isn't - especially when they only put in enough to fill the little cup.
Jerry Morrell is on the record saying that the reason they dump an extra handful of fries in the bag is to give the customer the impression they're getting a lot for their money. You sacrifice a little bit of margin for customer service. That's one of the best ways to grow a business.
