Well, I only "grew up" here from '73 as a 20 yr old hauoli wahine, (but also lived O'ahu 3 yrs. small kid time~ pre-statehood ~due to dad stationed@ Hickam) I can seldom hear any of these songs w/o tears. Father! Keep Hawai'i in your hands always!
Ma ke ala hele ‘O Iesu, I hala wai aku ai Along the road, Jesus Met Me ke kanaka ‘opio hanohano, Kalauna i ka wai wai. With a distinguished young man. Who was known for his wealth. Pane mai e ka ‘ opio, ‘E ku’u Haka maika’i, The young man said, My good Lord, He aha ho’i ka’u e hana aku ai, I loa’a e ke ola mau? What must I do To gain eternal life? (Chorus) ‘E ha’awi, e ha’awi lilo, I l-ou mau waiwai Give, give away all Of your possessions Huli a hahai mai ia’u, I loa’a e ke ola mau ia’oe Then come and follow me In order to gain eternal life. This part below is an addition to the song: Let me walk through paradise with you, lord Take my hand and lead me there, All my earthly treasures I would gladly give teach me how to love and how to share Greed and lust and vanity were mine, lord Till I found your love devine Now I am on my knees, I pray I can find a way Let me walk through paradise with you Oh my Lord, My savior Guide my poor feet along this lonely road Faith, hope, and love were like a wave before And now I'll walk through paradise with you
I love this song. My uncle had a recording of it with a second verse, but I don't know where it is now. It was one of the first Hawaiian songs I memorized, although in the recording I learned it from the last two lines of the addtion's chorus are "O, dear Lord, let me follow in Your footsteps/As I walk through paradise with You." I even wrote a second verse to the addition.I read an interesting bit of back-story about it: Almeida submitted it to his church for possible inclusion into a hymnal (or something like that) when he wrote it, but it got rejected -- because the tune was too much like a hula.
Ditto! Moved Big island 1973, when I was 20. Still here! Still with the beautiful man I met 1 month after I arrived on the shores of Paradise. Hawaiian music simply da bes'! No ka oe.
This is the song that made me fall in love with Hawaiian music, so very many years ago. Mahalo for posting. Saw them live just once, at that old hotel on Fort Street. Can’t remember the name of it now. Damn, wished I lived in Hawaii now.
This is my favorite version of this song!!! I had a copy of it on an mp3 from years ago but I didn't know who had recorded it... and I just now happened by your page by accident. This is so very Kewl! THANK YOU!

It's an Old classic Hawaiian song of the Kanaka Waiwai "Rich man" giving his possessions away to serve Ke Akua (God) and speaks basically of humbling your self to serve Ke Akua and promote Pono (righteousness) like Iesu (Jesus Christ).
