Yes, I liked this one. Parallels "Now You See Him" in some respects, but it's different enough to be interesting.
The writing and acting was solid, something that wasn’t consistent in the later episodes.
Hey can we just give credit that this show was on from the 60s to 2003, that blows my mind. Also we gotta realize Hollywood goes through trends with what they show us; for example, we went through the trend of reality TV, just think about that for a minute.

This was the second (and final) time we see the lieutenant fire a gun, the first being
in "Playback" (1975) where he fired into a box of sand as part of an experiment.
I think he fired it in a mattress in troubled waters

@@Ken_Scaletta Columbo, like Falk, canonically has a glass eye. Having one eye, and thus no depth perception and a large blind area, means he cannot accurately or safely fire a gun, particularly at a moving target. He also has stated that he almost never carries a gun on him. His department likely doesn't allow him to carry a gun because if he used it, he'd be a liability and possibly hit something he didn't intend to. He also very rarely needs a gun, as he nearly always has a patrol officer with him to make the arrest (though in cases where he knows the suspect won't resist or try to flee, he takes them in himself, such as in Any Old Port in a Storm), and this is one of two, perhaps three, instances in all of Columbo where the suspect tries to kill him. And every time, he saw it coming and prepared beforehand.

Blake would have had to make a run for it after killing Columbo because there’d be no way of him getting away with that, but if he kept him alive he could have either hoped for the best or done a runner after Columbo left, and having more time. Columbo is incredibly lucky the killer didn’t take the safer and most sensible option of putting it on stately
But columbo switched the labels to make sure it was safe, are you saying there's a way to bypass the safety?
@@stonecoldeli79 The implication with this scene is that Blake intended to kill him, so Blake didn't use what he thought was the safety to before bringing the blade down. If he in fact decided to NOT kill Columbo (which as I was saying was the far more likely and logical option when considering the characters in context) he would have put the safety on, unknowingly turning the safety off, resulting in Columbo's death. I'm just saying he took a massive unnecessary risk in getting his head chopped off if the killer had decided to play the long game.

@@MrMyers758 However, when the collar is fitted, you can see Columbo looking in turn up at both ends of it. My guess is this:
1. He made a mark that he could see from the execution position.
2. If Blake loaded it to kill, he'd allow things to run their course (as he did), since he'd reversed the settings.
3. If Columbo saw that it was lined up for "SAFE," and thus actually putting him in danger, he would have spoken up and said, "Just one more thing, sir, we have a little problem to fix first." He could do that, knowing that Blake wasn't trying to hurt him.
That's my theory. It's still a non-zero risk, but not as big as a risk as it might seem at first blush.
Columbo took a massive gamble there :) - to be honest he probably made both sides safe.

Seems like an awfully bold move by Columbo to switch the labels. I mean if the guy hadn't tried to kill him and killing a cop is not something you get away with he would have actually died.
In 1989 alone, Anthony Zerbe had *three* extreme deaths:
-Shot and went out a high window
-Guillotine
-Head blown up

No real exposure to Columbo apart from vague cultural awareness.
Theses clips have been a brilliant little insight into an inspired production by all parties.
Columbo doesn't carry guns, he actively avoids them. He would have had someone listening nearby to do the actual gun holding. The writers messed up with that

Who else came here after this was referenced in “The World’s Greatest Con”?
So he reversed the labels. What if the villain decided to put it on the safe way? He seemed to show balls and to back down from accusing him and even show him some respect by putting his trust in him as a magician which could’ve caused him to do so. Whatever the case Colombo had some real balls in that situation. His wincing face as the blade came down suggested he risked his life big time in order to nail him.

Watch the kid in the magic shop as he gives away his trick buy showing all the cards are the same. "practice" you haven't been doing it much then as you revealed all the cards when you did the poor cut.
Love Columbo......but this was really crazy......as much as I enjoyed watching it because it's exciting...it was somply too much risk.....crazy....

Well, this seems like an old building, and if there are any internal cracks, it can totally happen. The same way when à neighbor on top has a plumbing issues and gets flooded, your ceiling will have water dripping ruining your ceiling paint job. So, not bs at all.

The volume of blood In a human body is much less than an overflowing bathtub. And to that point, do you have any first hand experience with overflowing bathtubs and the volume of water and time it takes to flood an apartment below, or are you just relying on what you see on TV shows and in the movies? I repeat, IT'S TOTAL BS MADE UP FOR DRAMATIC EFFECT!
@@wayneyadams do I have any "first hand experience?" Lol I've had too much of that kind of experience living in an apartment complex in a large city, with jerk-neighbours flooding at least once or twice a year. So, yeah, I am speaking from experience.
And while a human body may not splash blood the way they show in some horror movies, the spot of blood in Columbo was reasonable/not overly big + the man was decapitated which means two carotid arteries were cut (in addition to veins and other blood vessels) -- so in total there can easily be enough blood to seep through the ceiling with the size of the blood spot they showed in the movie.

Bruh, you apparently forgot how hammy some of the 70s episodes were... Janet Leigh's episode in particular...
Great episode but there is absolutely no way that Columbo would take the risk of getting himself killed just to get that last piece of evidence. If the killer had chosen the ‘Safe’ side to be smart and play it straight as Columbo’s evidence was by his own admission weak, Columbo would have died and it probably would have been classed as an accident given the label switch. If he chose ‘Danger’ as in the episode where are the witnesses to corroborate the guillotine was used? It would have been Columbo’s word versus the killer’s and the last piece of evidence would have been circumstantial. Daft ending as completely unrealistic.
Always my issue with the ending
Does anyone else feel the writers intended to suggest that the killer and the victim had a sexual relationship in the Ugandan prison?
As the victim says: "Try to remember what we meant to each other in that place, and what we gave each other ..."
That doesn't necessarily mean a sexual relationship between the two but it doesn't sound like the kind of language run-of-the-mill prison inmates use either. In other words it seems, to me, that they were more than friends in the slammer.
But what do you think?

Oh I spotted the queercoding immediately! The flirtatious rival tones of voice. And it would make sense for the story, too. If they had been more than mentor and pupil in prison, then that would make the mentor's betrayal even more painful
Certainly sounded like it. Funnily enough, the actor who played 'Blake' (Anthony Andrews) was in a British series with Jeremy Irons where they were a pair of Horse's Hoofs...

Have to agree on a logical standpoint - but it did fit the tone of the episode.
Well, if the bad guy didn't try to kill Columbo then his head would be sliced off. And that was based on the idea that Columbo wouldn't have his name in his files nor tell anyone where he was going.
If you put the guillotine collar on the “danger” way, it works the way it’s supposed to. The blade comes all the way down, through the collar and whatever is inside.
If you put the collar on the “safe” way, the blade stops inside of the top half of the collar and a second blade inside of the bottom half drops down.
A very good and very dangerous trick.
