Yeah, I'm always shocked how often people basically give away a relatives valuable items without doing any research about them. Usually, when I'm buying everything like this, someone in the family comments, "So and so never wore anything nice, just costume"

There is treasure everywhere and learning a little about lots of different niches really helps. I was at an estate sale Saturday and everyone rushed the jewellery. Sitting right there on top was a well known brooch brand box. I grabbed it and a bunch of other costume jewellery. Mostly brooches which I have a huge collection of. The first one I grabbed though sold on ebay yesterday for $300 less than 24 hours after I listed it. It means I can keep the rest.
Yeah, I try to at least have a working knowledge of the most common items that you'll see at estate sales. It really pays off sometimes, just like you said! You may not know enough to pay up for an item, but you'll at least know to grab it if it's not too expensive and research it later. I went to an estate sale just yesterday at 1pm, and picked up a lot of jewelry that everybody else passed on all day. I was both shocked and happy! That video will come out later this week.
