$23 Kelvin Probe resistance measurement on Keithley 2015

  • My Keithley 2015 THD can measure down to 100uOhms, but I wasn't going to spend hundreds of dollars on a name brand Kelvin Probe when Amazon has them for 23 Australian Dollars.
Can it possibly be any good?

2015's are nice meter's, but I'm too frugal to pop for one at the current market price, and finding one at a reasonable price seems to get you a used one that may or may not have issues ( I currently just have a old 197 which is accurate enough for my work). I'm surprised you didn't play with the REL feature , using a good dual banana plug with a short tied onto it as a calibration/base measurement, to check the 2W VS 4W lead values too.

Thank you! I never even new it did that. I though Relative is what you pressed when you wanted the missus to bring you a beer. Just kidding! In all my career as a professional design engineer and then later in a production environment, I don't think I ever used a bench multimeter once. It was always handheld Fluke meters. So I think this is actually the first time I have ever used kelvin probes. And our meters never had features like REL or anything like that. Yes - it's a lot of money. However, as I have mentioned on a few videos, we really get stung for freight here in Australia. My meter came from China and had free freight. I want to get some plug-ins for my Tek TM5006, but the freight is almost always more than the plug-in itself. So I just have to wait for something reasonable to come up.

@@audionautica6843 It's Good that you got a reasonable deal on it. The one function it does have that is desirable (for audio work) is the THD function for quick and handy use. I'm planning to go the route of using the free REW ( Room Eq Wizard) software with a good DAC such as a Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen, as it has graphing and freq sweep/phase measurement capability, and uses the DAC/Sound Card as a baseline/low distortion signal source as well, it just won't give a convenient "one button" THD measurement.

You can pick them up for good deals sometimes. I was able to grab one from Japan for $430 including shipping. And then spent about another $70 on an order from RS components to replace the capacitors with 105c 5k+ hours rated parts including the tantalum caps (higher voltage rated caps). And upgrade to the latest firmware (EEPROM chips are surprisingly expensive).
The reason I went for this meter was around the incredible refresh rate. Both the continuity, DC volts and resistance measurements are blazingly fast.
My meter was from early 2000s and was spot on with a brand new Siglent 6.5 digit instrument measuring a voltage reference (from China). Both matched what the voltage reference from China said, not any kind of precision but for them to match down to the 5th digit at least gives some confidence. Interestingly even with its REALLY fast refresh rate the Keithley still had less noise on the last digit VS the Siglent (last digit on that was practically useless)
So these meters seem to hold their calibration really well or I got lucky, but either way, great meter.
