I also wholly believe the reason the corners are cut was for decoration and how it looked on paper. You can see that kind of design on a lot of things in that time period.
8.307.000 usd for the one cent magenta; considerably below auction house estimate. My feeling is that the sadly faded and deteriorated print (and the ghastly, megalomaniac signature stiletto on the back!) worked against it. This is first time this iconic stamp does not set a new record compared to its last sale. What do our two gentlemen say?
I don’t necessarily believe the history on a lot of these items I would bet not as much is known. For example this stamp was obvious to me not a first iteration and there has to be more incredible and even more rarer examples in existence. Maybe not as “postage” but as ornamental. I’d like to believe there exists “stamps” that no one knows about. Squirreled away in some hidey hole. I think philately should expand beyond to some of the early calligraphy and paper and categorize them as part of stamp collecting. I can just see there being tons of cool family crest, writings, drawings of symbols and such. People of old times were big into symbology. There’s only so much postage stamps since long distance travel and mail services are modern in comparison to a lot of human ingenuity. I would like to see what exists for fancy paper adornments
The price drop reflects non interest. Many of the people who wanted this stamp are dead and gone. The price will continue to drop; thats why its being sold now as shares you can buy into for as little as 160.00. I had the opportunity to buy in at any price and declined. The past owners ruined the stamp with all their marks. Its like spray painting your initials on the mona lisa. If not chemically treated it will turn into dust. Im sure a better copy will be found eventually that dosen't look like a bad stop sign. The stamp has been raped; abused and disfigured to such an extent its only a sad reflection of its former glory to be retired on the island of misfit toys.
This older, lady philatelist is delighted to see two handsome young fellas contributing to keeping the hobby vital and relevant. Great series, gents!

I saw the British Guiana one cent black at a stamp exhibit many years ago. To a philatelist it's like an art collector seeing the Mona Lisa.

It's an overrated and ugly stamp. I have no clue how it become a philatelists Mona Lisa. The inverted stamp looks the way much better.
