I met Pat at a Germs reunion gig in 2009 in Brighton. He was way cool & super friendly, the only time I have ever been star-struck but I hid it well. The gig itself was tiny and I was directly in front of Pat for most of it, could not have been more than 2meters away. My friend and I had the singer (the actor) on our shoulders at times. Such a great memory.
That was after the movie I remember that. I met them in San Antonio tx, my girlfriend wanted to meet the actor who played Darby, all I wanted was to meet pat and Lorna, they were so fuckin cool. I wear my germs tattoo with pride
Pat and his guitars always seem to be forgotten in Nirvana even though they made them sound like 10x more powerful and made both In Utero tours one of if not best tours in Nirvana. Glad to see some real recognition for him in Nirvana + his other work

I waited in the autograph line for Dave and when it was my turn, Dave looked at my empty hands and up to my eyes and I said I didn’t want an autograph, just a handshake. He laughed and said that’s different and shook my hand. I’m freaking out on the inside cuz the drummer of Nirvana just called me different. I walk over to the freight elevator and Pat Smear follows me in and lights a cigarette and looks at me. I looked at him and rolled my eyes like he wasn’t even there. I’ll admit it, I’m not an envious person by nature but I was jealous of him.
Agree with Darby being a brilliant lyricist. Pat told a story in an interview that Darby left his written lyrics on the windscreen of David Bowie's car and got a note back from Bowie saying how good his lyrics are and to keep writing
Saw the Germs 3 times in 79/80 as a young kid. I was obsessed from day one. It’s true Pat never owned his own guitar until he showed up with the Red Hagstrom at The Starwood. A few months earlier he was playing a Mustang in the Darby Crash band. Great clip here 👍
So what a minute, you have a time machine?!?! You met Pat backstage in October of 2024 at ACL?! Hook a brother up man. I want to go back and hit a few Grateful Dead shows in the 80's!
As a recent Nirvana fan, like getting into them late last year, I liked Pat's added vocals and guitars in songs especially in songs like Heart Shaped Box. Also his added energy for the Live and Loud version of Blew, so amazing
If you’re not aware of it you should look into Jason Everman’s life story. He went from Nirvana guitarist to Delta Force/CAG special forces operator and has some really interesting stories.
Yeah I came to the comment section to see if anyone else had realized that he is a time traveler who is going to meet Kurt’s brother and guitar tech in October this year’ it’s so crazy! He even had the footage to prove that is going to do all of those things somehow! I guess as a lot of people know’ there are some pretty lazing people out there’s and this dude is the me of the really incredible stuff ones’ 😂 But yeah it think it was last year that it happened’ I remember watching something about it on this channel about it’ ✌️👨🏻🍳🪿🦵🏻👖🕺🐴🍻
You made me wanna learn to play nirvana on my guitar thanks to you I can play three songs all the way through Come as you are The man who sold the world Smells like teen spirit Thanks man
@@NirvanaGuitars oh my god dude, this has to be one of your best videos, I loved it so much man. Keep up the great work man, you’re definitely one of the best creators out there!
I’m obsessed with all things Pat. His red Hagstrom, the White Hagstrom with 3 pickups he used on FF Tours in 1996, his SG Custom, all of it. You can see various Hagstrom’s he picks up on the road, particularly on the early FF tours. He’s my favourite guitarist for sure and I’m so glad to see he’s finally getting TH-cam content!
12:10 another reason Kurt always wanted it to be a 4 piece was most of his favorite bands were. I forget where I read it, but Nirvana’s sound was mainly influenced by The Beatles melodic pop hooks, Black Sabbath’s impenetrable heaviness, and The Stooges chaotic intensity. All were 4-pieces for most of their careers. Nirvana always struck me as band that looked and sounded kind of like they were from that same late 60’s/early 70’s era but fell into a time warp and landed in the late 80’s/early 90’s and a lot of their influences, outside of 70’s punk and 80’s alternative, speak to that. That was definitely a time with 4-piece bands were very “in”… and the Germs were also a 4-piece, so there ya go Anyway great video! Pat is not only a living legend but also just a chill guy. He’s proof you can be both!!
Hell yeah! My favourite era of nirvana was definitely when they had Pat in the band, with my favourite performance being the one on nulle part ailleurs. Definitely reckon Pat added a lot to the shows from his guitar and backing vocals filling up the sonic space. You’ve done a legendary job recreating the Hagstrom. The Hagstrom is definitely Pat’s most iconic guitar and was really awesome learning about all the changes and mods. Definitely excited to see more videos with the Hagstrom!
I remember the first time I heard The Germs. It was Lexicon Devil in GTA V. I found it really catchy. I then decided to listen to their only album and loved it. Then I got into Nirvana years later and was shocked to see Pat in.
Pat's red hagstrom is in now in the Punk Rock Museum in Vegas! The best part is you can actually play it in the jam room! if youre ever in the area pls come check it out
I’ve saw photos of that one while doing research, and I don’t believe it’s the same guitar since the one in Vegas has a logo on the headstock and no signs of a tailpiece once being on there. Even if it’s not this exact one, it’s still Pat’s guitar and it’d be a dream come true to play it!!
@@NirvanaGuitars i was just researching that too and youre right there are those discrepencies. I cant seem to figure out what that one is however. It is said at the museum that this one is the last Germs guitar and first Nirvana guitar, so im here trying to validate that for myself lol. I will keep looking and asking around about it cause now im perplexed!
@@mightymilan4498 it’s totally a possibility!! But those discrepancies are what me not include it in this video. If you happen to find confirmation that that one is this exact guitar, I will definitely do some sort of update and credit you!
Good job on that build. I have 3 Hagstroms currently (two HIIIs from the 60s and a 2005 Swede reissue). I used to buy these guitars all the time when you could get em for about $125 (the 90s), and while I always enjoyed them, they invariably ended up being sold for rent. I must have had half a dozen over the years. Now, I really appreciate these wonderful Swedish instruments. The Chinese reissues are great too. I've ogled a few F20T's over the year, but haven't copped. I love that you found an original neck and did that build. Hagstrom is/was a very special guitar maker. Sorely underappreciated, for the most part. The Swede might be one of the most serious guitars ever built. They don't call it the Les Paul killer for nothing!
Very much agreed. Pat brought a fun new vibe into the band and rounded out the sound. I consider him apart of the lineup. To think of what an LP with Pat involved would have been like.. great video dude!
Dude thanks for this video. That guitar is so awesome, I love the double cut horns, as a massive SG lover and Fender fan this is like the best of both worlds wow
Awesome video. Live and Loud has always been my favorite Nirvana show. They were on their game and so powerful. I've always been curious as to the gear Pat played. Thanks for the insight!
Awesome vid as usual!! I once read the pat was supposed to play on you know your right but didn't get the chance before Kurt died I have always wondered what it would have sounded like.
Thank you for doing this it was a very well-oiled machine.... For me Nirvana had a full sound when Pat jumped on the train , I can listen to a 1993 / 94 live show and then the studio album of Utero and still feel it
I'm sure that you already knew this, but in case you didn't, Pat's new signature Hagstrom had the neck pickup replaced with a P-90 that fits in a humbucker space. Knowing that Pat has been using Seymour Duncan pickups throughout the majority of his later years, I'd feel very comfortable saying that it's probably a Seymour Duncan. I don't know what model S.D. P-90 it is because they "had" a few models through the years. That would have to be addressed when you get the chance to purchase one. As I said, you probably already knew that. But if you didn't, I pray that you get this message and it helps you. Also, thank you for all of the information you have, so kindly given in your videos!
Nice to hear the guitar inspired you to write your own stuff. You’re lucky man I’ve lived 20 miles south of Seattle since 6th grade in 93 and moved from Alaska and discovered Nirvana after hearing weird al not knowing he didn’t write the teen spirit parody until seeing Nirvana on beavis and butthead and have been hooked ever since. You are very lucky for all the cool Nirvana related experiences you’ve had and I’m rather jealous. It’s obvious you’ve done a shitload of research on Kurt and the band and are very passionate. I used to ride my bike to green river community college and go on the stage at the lindbloom student center where Nirvana had played 4 years before and remember thinking how cool it was cus I was able to walk on the stage they played on. They also had a jukebox that had drain you on it and I played that song a million times which is my favorite song by them maybe…..It’s a tough decision but THANK YOU for such cool videos they are put together very well!!!
Thanks for the heart man.. I will add it was Kurt showing he was serious about his career that’s why the ending doesn’t make sense but who knows really I’m big nirvana fan 2004 when I started taking playing seriously and my brother played at trees in Dallas a month after Kurt hit the guy with his guitar. Seen nirvana at reunion arena three months before his death. And turned me on to never mind over after that.
10:09-Well, this is fascinating. I own a 1971 Univox Badazz which I bought in 1977. The only mod I've ever made to it is switching out the control knobs from the knurled dome knobs it came with to gold Gibson speed knobs. I still have the hang tag. Although the Badazz was always said to be based on the Guild S-100 Polara, I've always thought it looked more like a Hagstrom. I've also always though that Badazz was a stupid name. But then, Univoxes always had bizarre names.
Pat's such a G. A lot of dudes had that Greg Ginn rhythm-specification in punk but Pat's got a swing that's unmatched, and he's actually secretly a gear nerd

Nirvana is one of my all-time favourite bands. I never knew much about Pat Smear. I always remember the way kurt said his name when he introduced him with a kind of laugh in his voice. Now I kind of know why.
Pat is now a full blown hagstrom collector, with many vintage models in his huge collection. And of course there's the Pat Smear signature model from the modern incarnation of hagstrom. I own a couple vintage HIIN OT, Swedes, Vikings, Super Swede.... And 2 modern era issues. Great axes.
I was at the show you have posted in this video and it was called the moon in New Haven Connecticut and my band ez green played there too and you can see our music videos on TH-cam and this was in 1991 thanks for sharing this amazing video with us all I really enjoyed it. ROCK ON !! 🤘🏻💀🤘🏻 Chris Villano lead singer of ez green
"One of the most overlooked..." 1000%. Everything the man touches turns to gold. I'd also recommend checking out his tragically underrated, & sadly out of print solo albums (part of me has always wondered if some of the best ideas from those records might've evolved into Nirvana tunes, had things turned out different)
There was a FF show on MTV when i was a freshman in HS from the 95 euro leg of the tour. The show was called “Im Ok EuroK” and pat played that guitar I believe in a couple of the songs
Great video. I have a 60s Hagstrom 1. They have by far the thinnest necks I’ve ever seen and have a really unique sound. The bridge pickup is crazy bright, similar to what you hear on spaghetti western soundtracks. You can get them sometimes for about $500. I have nicer guitars that I’ve collected over the years but I probably play my Hagstrom the most, just something about it.
Sorry for not commenting as early as I normally do!! I've been sick the past few days and slept really late lol. This video is looking promising as hell so far!! So glad Pat is getting some attention by someone. Yet again a banger, Eric!!!
@@NirvanaGuitars Can totally hear Pat Smear telling you to "stop it" when you told him you're such a fan - at the end of video LOL, what an awesome dude.
Thanks so much for this, your passion for this is enjoyed and appreciated especially given the dedication, effort, research, time and resource you put into these incredibly well produced videos documenting Kurt’s guitars and history, absolutely loving it. Also it’s really cool you’ve now included a guitar and it’s historical musical importance ie; legendary Pat “germs” Smears Hagstrom broadening this incredible catalogue and collection, makes so much sense and most definitely justified as being an often overlooked rock legend guitar and guitarist/musician. Not that the following is crucially important in amongst the generous layers of detail you’ve correlated but what was that round circle shaped sticker about?, that ended up placed at the head of Pats original red Hagstrom? Thanks Eric looking forward to your next project! 🤘🎸
hey, you should try doing tabs videos for both kurt and pat's parts on live and loud... you're the channel we trust the most for sonically replicating nirvana, so that would make everyone happy i think. dunno if that's too much work but damn it would be so nice
Thank you for including my previous comment in your display of requests for Pat gear. And, of course, killer video! (oh, and I should mention that I saw the first Foo Fighters tour, and Pat didn't have the red Hagstrom, but instead used an SG copy that was entirely blue, including the fretboard, possibly a Hagstrom itself...)
That was a Moser SG. It was used in the video for Big Me. Don’t know if it was used on the road much. Any pictures of it on stage during that early part you were saying?
@@PulseXP-yo8wu It was 1995, and cellphone cameras were not a thing yet. But, apparently, someone snuck in a full VHS handicam....glean from this footage what you can. th-cam.com/video/i_371cFzzbg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=rlCe9FRACGCz0zzW
Pat changed out the bridge pickup also. It's not original. It looks like it's an uncovered humbucker. You can see 2 rows of slugs in the updated picture of the black Hagstrom. The picture at the time marker of 4:50. It appears the pickup has an open top with the 12 slugs showing and a chrome ring that surrounds the outer part of the pickup)
Not sure if you'll see this (or if you're interested in a road trip), but the Punk Rock Museum in Vegas has one of Pat's Hagstroms on display, and they let you plug it in and play it =) Unfortunately it doesn't give you his talent though...,.,.., I tried.....
Can confirm, it was there last fall (November 2023) and I played it as well. Pat was instrumental in getting the museum funded and it's well worth the visit. I took a photo of the Hagstrom that's there, and was told it was the guitar used during the last Germs show and when he joined Nirvana. It's crazy to me, that it may be the one documented here...hanging on a wall in the Jam Room, at the Punk Rock Museum in Las Vegas.
@@TheRealMe_73 wow, that's some really cool history! I was too scared to ask about the lore because I was holding an essentially priceless instrument, but that's really cool to know in retrospect

Awesome video Eric , gave me the chills !
Great axes.
Thank you for talking about the germs. One of my favorites
Pat's SG should be legendary by now, good video by the way.
I've always thought his Hagstrom looked really cool and sounds awesome as well, this was awesome
The actor for Darby being so good that The Germs literally played a show with him is incredible
Sounds like an absolute pleasant dude.
Great stuff as usual. Keep it up.
Yessssss so hyped for this
"One of the most overlooked..." 1000%.
Brilliant ...Really Well Researched and Presented...Cheers AAA
5:57 imagine saying that at only 22, that’s like smth bands say that have been around for 40yrs
Another W video by NirvanaGuitars!
19:57 Nice build!!!
"Hold my cigarette..."
-Pat Smear to the stage
Sorry for not commenting as early as I normally do!! I've been sick the past few days and slept really late lol.
This video is looking promising as hell so far!! So glad Pat is getting some attention by someone. Yet again a banger, Eric!!!
As always great videos 👏🏼👏🏼
Well done, your videos are superb. Always leave a warm feeling of nostalgia in my soul. Thank you Eric. 🙂
Wow thank you so much! That really means a lot 🙏
@@NirvanaGuitars Can totally hear Pat Smear telling you to "stop it" when you told him you're such a fan - at the end of video LOL, what an awesome dude.
I love Pat’s guitar tone on Live and Loud, especially when he comes in during “Breed”.
You'r video's are always great and inspiration for me🔥 keep the great work up🔥
Thanks so much for this, your passion for this is enjoyed and appreciated especially given the dedication, effort, research, time and resource you put into these incredibly well produced videos documenting Kurt’s guitars and history, absolutely loving it.
So you fell in love with a musician Is one of my favorite albums of all time, Smear a genius

It was 1995, and cellphone cameras were not a thing yet. But, apparently, someone snuck in a full VHS handicam....glean from this footage what you can. th-cam.com/video/i_371cFzzbg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=rlCe9FRACGCz0zzW
Oh man thank you for this great video!
Im excited for the unplugged video
Pat changed out the bridge pickup also. It's not original. It looks like it's an uncovered humbucker. You can see 2 rows of slugs in the updated picture of the black Hagstrom. The picture at the time marker of 4:50. It appears the pickup has an open top with the 12 slugs showing and a chrome ring that surrounds the outer part of the pickup)
It could be nice to expand like you did to the band's other instruments, like Novoselic's bass and Grohl's drum kits!
I’ve never clicked on a notification so quickly
YAY ANOTHER HISTORY VIDEO!!!
Pat Smear is an absolute legend and icon!
A video on Jason Everman's telecaster seen on the Bleah Album Cover would be awesome.
I'm going to list my Pat Smear Signature Hagstrom on Reverb this week. Probably one of the only ones for sale in the US.
I always liked his black Hagstrom guitar. The red is nice looking too
Love every second of this! Guess it’s time to get a ripper
What a great video, thank you! 🤘
Pat Smear is the happiest rock gatarist of all time,he made nirvana, and Foo is not Foo without Pat Smear, and he is a legend.
Pat is one of the best guitarists in my opinion. Also want to see his guitar at unplugged
Really well done video! Subscribed!
Best vid you’ve made
Wow thank you so so much! This one took me quite a bit of time and I am very happy with how it came out 😃
I have to agree, Nirvana was at their peak with Pat. He paired very well with Kurt.
Can also confirm, played “Forming” on it!
@@TheRealMe_73 wow, that's some really cool history! I was too scared to ask about the lore because I was holding an essentially priceless instrument, but that's really cool to know in retrospect
Don't forget Pat hosting MTV's House of Style ✨🫠
