I thought my buttonhole automatic foot was broken, so I took my machine to store store I bought it from and it worked fine there. The instructions in the manual, as well as the TH-cam videos don’t explain that the fabric has to end up under the sensor, so when your trying to sew holes on a narrow placket and you don’t know, it won’t work.

You might try putting a piece of tearaway stabilizer under the part of the garment where you are sewing the buttonhole. Then when are done, you can just tear away the stabilizer right next to the buttonhole stitches on the back.

The Feed dogs do go down. There is a lever on the back of the free arm.

We would recommend the standard box buttonhole for fleece, since the fabric doesn't fray easily.
