Really interesting. Thank you. My parents had his books in the 1950sand being a great reader I read them all at 15. His short stories left me very uneasy. I was thrilled when staying at Raffles in Singapore a few years ago to see they had a special little area set where he wrote. It’s all been modernised now so it may not be there.
Stunning that this guy talks about the popularity of adaptations of Maugham and doesn't mention Shakespeare. (And also that there are some people about whom there are endless numbers of biographies -- again, Shakespeare.)
It's a pity that the video ends before the talk ended and the near incessant giggling from a very involved member of the audience. Maugham had to change the title from _Beauty from Ashes_ to _Of Human Bondage_ because the former was used by another author shortly before his book got published.
Thank you very much for organizing this meeting with Robert Calder. His talk was very interesting and resourceful.

Thank you for this very illuminating talk. Hope to visit the bookshop some time!

Terrific talk. Many thanks.
Thank you.
Maugham's The Letter is set in Malaya, and Singapore, not Hong Kong, unless I'm mistaken...
I liked the laughing lady, she seemed in good spirits. Those are the type of people needed more
The "laughing" lady is obviously either a very stupid and/or intoxicated member of the audience. She should have been asked to leave.
the laughing lady was too disturbing! !
Utterly stupid, Is it her who does the soughing when she doesnt cackle?

I agree about the pity, but I rather enjoyed the giggling.
No mention of the fact that Maugham was a physician
No racoons in the UK!
