- Successful airgun hunting hinges on being in the right place at the right time… and a small helping of luck from time to time. Andy Watkins gets his timing and location spot on as he heads out on a roving session around the paddocks, and is rewarded with some busy shooting and a mixed bag.
We’ve also got a roundup of highlights from IWA 2019 in Nuremberg, including new gear from Daystate, MTC, JSB, FX, Stoeger, Ridgeline and Air Arms.
Get more airgun insight every month in our sister magazine Airgun Shooter, now totally redesigned and available in all good newsagents and from www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk/field-sports
Thumbs up for the pigeon shooting!
Thank you for sharing! Andy is very professional
Absolutely Cracking video, and Great shooting, Thank you All, Cheers
Thanks very much. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the double bill. My airgun hunt this morning just deliver 1 rock pigeon.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
Great shooting. I watch a few squirrel pest control channels and this one rates up there as excellent. As you probably know squirrels are seasonal game here in the US and most are hunted with a shotgun or small caliber rifle like a .22. Thanks for the video.
Thanks very much.
You're welcome Bertram. Hopefully you've subscribed so you can see some more!
I took pin point shots at 100 yards with full power and great air rifle
some cracking shots there Andy!
26:34 Rich, it looks to me like that squirrel could see you inside the hide, your camcorder can and arguably a squirrels eyesight is far better, you're a lucky chap having that permission, more please. ;o)
regards

Hi, yes and he wasn't alone as several others started to hang back towards the end of the session. I had to open the sides of the hide so I could get some light to film by which didn't help. I've left the hide in place now and dressed it with some branches which seemed to help when I went back a week or two later.
Great video as usual from Airgun Shooter! I live in Kansas and I have more squirrels in my backyard than in the woods, and cannot shoot them inside the city.
Thanks very much and I'm glad you enjoyed it. We have restrictions on where to use air rifles safely here in the UK as well.
cracking vid Matt
Another great show....... thanks 👍
Some great shooting lads well done 👍👍☺️
Nice shoot 👌🏻
Awesome hunting bro!🎯🎯👍👍
Great video thanks for sharing
Thanks very much. Glad you enjoyed it.
Nice shooting
1st thing i thought when he set the hide up in a leafless wood was it stuck out like a sore thumb and guessing its what was making the squizzers nervous, having said that a neat little add on to the show and made it just that bit extra special.. many thanks..
Yes, I've left the hide up now rather than take it down at the end of the session, and I've dressed it with some foliage - its a lot less conspicuous now!
Thanks Moonbear. I've left the hide in place now - the woods are nice and sheltered. The squirrels are very used to it now (so are the spiders!) and I've shot hundreds of squirrels from it since.
Good shooting Andy. I think this is the first time I've seen a Walther Rotek 8 used here on this Show. What caliber is this rifle?
Walter is a great rifle just wish the action was more suppressed
The rm8 is a great rifle. Well underestimated by many. Nice shooting 👍
Andy iv just got the rm8 wot silencer would u recommend I use as the 1 that came with the gun still sounds like a cannon many thank Mr j Pearson
You 2 do a lot of hunting over there. Good living.
Another great vidio as allways. Well dun lads
To the Englishman at the end hunting squirrels.
You mention everything about your gear but the caliber and foot pounds.
I've wasted my money on pneumatic rifles. Now all I've got are two 100 dollar air rifles that I'm pretty comfortable to 30 yards with.
Was that a ricochet at 8:54?
What pellets do you use mate
TOP MAN MAT.
Stop holding your breath when shooting Andy. You sound like darth Vader. 🤣🤣👍
Hi i have recently acquired a springer rifle from my grandad and is less than 12 ft lbs. I am really enjoying plinking in the garden but now i want to get an FAC to get hunting off the ground. I was wondering if you could help me in the right direction of how to go about getting my first FAC?
Hi Micky. There is an article on shootinguk.co.uk called 'FAC air rifles - are they necessary?'. Here they talk about the pros and cons of them. As I'm sure you're aware, in order to own an FAC rated air rifle you require a valid UK Firearms Certificate. The controversy here is that if you go to the trouble to get the certificate, the likes of purchasing a rimfire rifle is better. However, this article does have some good points arguing both sides. Before looking into applying for a firearms, if you don't already, find a gamekeeper, landowner or syndicate that are happy for you to come on the land with your grandads air rifle to do some vermin control. Get a really good feel for the land, what animals are about and what the average shooting distances are like. This will then give you a better picture as to what type of rifle you go for.
The perks of also going somewhere where there are other members of the syndicate who handle rifles is that it allows you to go out with them, learn about the rifles and maybe have a practice with different rifles.
Personally, based on the land I shoot on, I shoot either a 22. Rimfire or a 17. HMR as average shots range from 30-200 yards and allows me to control anything from squirrels on the ground all the way to foxes. Remember, although safety also stands with air rifles, it becomes a lot more serious and can have more consequences when handling more powerful rifles.
Hope this helped! Anymore questions just ask
Nathan
I'm lucky enough to have several FAC rifles, but to be honest, most of my pest control for rabbits and squirrels is done with sub 12 ft.lbs. rifles. If you're starting out I'd recommend getting yourself a UK legal limit rifle and practicing until you can put five shots within a 10 p piece at 25 metres.
Excellent stuff ... love the wolverineR .. and super shooting by both the lads ...
Thanks very much Mark. The Wolverine R is one of my favourites and usually the first gun I pick up. However, I normally use a BSA R10 mk II when shooting squirrels. The Wolverine is in fact a 30 ft. lbs. FAC rifle and too much gun for the task of shooting squirrels, but the R10 was in for a service.
Thanks Mark. The Wolverine R is one of my favourites for sure.
Hello, I was curious to see if you could recommend the most silent airgun/pellet gun available on the market? I'm doing some pest control for my landlord but he doesn't want anyone to report gunshots to the police lol. I need something quiet but powerful enough to take out something like a raccoon and groundhogs.
I'm afraid I can't comment on the power you'd need for raccoon and groundhogs. However, I'd say that you should look at PCP (pre-charged pneumatic) rifles rather than springers, especially if you are going to be the using higher power levels allowed in the US, which is where I assume you are based. Invest in a decent silencer as well.
Can you tell mention me a good air gun for hunting bird a squirrel
The best thing to do is pay a visit to your local gun shop Josh. They'll be able to give you some advice based on your budget. You may want to budget for a decent scope as well.
your dogs like just stop talking and just give me it lol great vid as always
Strange questions: What do they do with the bodies of the animals that kill? Do they burn them, sell them, eat them? Or something else?
Hi. Most of the rabbits, pigeons and squirrels I shoot go in the kitchen or to a local bird of prey centre.
Had to look for your videos as they're not coming up with the bell!
Why didn't he mop up the pheasant?
Out of season. 👍
Its very nice
What pellets are you using in the rm8 please.
Air Arms Fields
nice
What a crack shot and an awesome show!
I need to know 177 or 22
Hi Jonty. The squirrel film was with a .22 Daystate Wolverine R. I believe Andy was using a .177. Hope that helps.
Does Andy ever shoot .22???
Not if i can help it
You using FAC?
Good spot Ray! Indeed the Wolverine R is a 30 ft. lbs. FAC rifle and way too much gun for the task of shooting squirrels. In fact I usually use my BSA R10 mk II or a Brocock Bantam - both in .22 and 12 ft. lbs. They are great to use, hit hard and are laser accurate. I have zeroed them at 20 metres and use them for nearly all my rat and squirrel control. Unfortunately though, the BSA was in for a service, and a friend was using the Bantam when this job came in. Not that using the Wolverine was too much of a hardship!
Most of my pest control is done with a 12 ft.lbs rifle, especially in the woods in the film where I normally use a BSA R10 in .22. Unfortunately the BSA was in for a service so I used my Wolverine R which is indeed an FAC powered rifle and completely unnecessary for the task. How about you?
great vids. fyi: 61.77 acres
Thanks Ted. Now I know!
Tell us a little about the gun you are using, where can we purchase one.
Hi Kenneth. Sorry its taken me a while to reply. If you're referring to the rifle used in the squirrel film, it is a Daystate Wolverine R. Andy is using a Walther Rotex RM8 Varmint. Both are available from all good gun shops as they are very popular models.
Hi
😉👍🏻
👍👊😎
Why do you cover your face but not your hands.
Your sound is slow.
An avenue of trees not a corridor lol
Isn't an avenue of trees a single line of trees? lol.
Wears face vail because the sponsor says he must......
Hi Tom. To be honest, I don't even know who makes the face veil I use. I agree they are not as vital when shooting squirrels from a hide as when say shooting corvids or pigeons, but I chose to wear it that day because I had the sides of the hide open for filming and, well out of habit! I hope you enjoyed the film.
why not shoot some magpies andy or you are not up to it none of you shoot magpies . let us see you go out and shoot some . and not just one
peter leonard why u so dumb founded they are probably ten times better than u and they have shot magpies in multiple vids
minus 1......because Andy boring !
Dr Feelgood your comments are boring, again
It's sad to see people just killing innocent wildlife just for fun.
I agree. My personal mantra, and I believe the view of many others, is that when it comes to pest control, a pest is only a pest when it is being a pest. I tried to explain the reasons why I control grey squirrels at the start of my film.
TheDailyBikeRider
It is a farmers responsibility by law to eradicate vermin & pest animals. I just wish this law factored in the two leg animals! (Long pig).
Peter. Don't get me wrong - I enjoy my work/sport, but I don't kill animals for the sake of it, or just to have some fun. Hopefully you watched enough of the introductory comments in my film to understand the reason why I carry out squirrel control in the woods. My guiding philosophy is that I'll only shoot a pest when it is being a pest. I hope that provides some context.
Matt has is better this kid don’t stop taking nonsense
Not impressed with the video guys
Sorry to hear that Matthew.
Some elaboration would be helpful. Thanks
Sorry but the first part was awful, it's obvious that it's scripted and did not look natural.
The middle was informative even been a little late. The last section on squirrel shooting was what we have come to expect from the shooting show.
Thanks very much. More to come soon I hope!
Don't heart animals pls...
He is not hurting them they are dead instantly and he is doing it for pest control
@@aquaticso114 KILLER
@@MrPlasma01 Yeah. He's a killer because he's killing pests that can kill or injure other animals that are either prayed or have diseases that can kill humans/livestock
As I've said before, my approach is to shoot pests only when they are being a pest. Otherwise I leave them alone. In this case, grey squirrels were damaging trees, predating on songbird eggs and young and negatively impacting the rest of the woodland wildlife.
