  • Morgan O'Brien has released another cute book, but this one is twice the price of his Matchstick Mouse series. When asked about this on Instagram, Morgan said he had opted for better paper this time round which had caused to price increase. Let's take a look!
    A big thank you Morgan for trying to get us colourists better paper to use for his cute artwork!

    *Update*
    Morgan has reached out to me and said that he selected the more expensive "Premium Colored Ink on 88-105gsm white paper" for this book which increased the price, and this should have meant better paper than the standard "Black Ink on 74-90gsm white paper".
    Therefore, he said he was surprised to see my test result.
    I'm glad that I was able to provide some visibility on the paper quality here in the UK for this quality of Amazon print.

      I mean, you have overlap in those two options that would easily put the paper at the same weight as always.. and 90gsm is pretty much standard.

    The new "Matchstick Mouse Pumpkin Party" that came out recently is on the same paper as this new one. It has even less pages, only about half at $10.99 US. It's cute but definitely not worth the cost. It made me mad so I sent it back. As you said, you can purchase a high end Maria Trolle or Johanna Basford earlier editions for the same cost or less and the newer editions for a bit more. I love Morgan O'Brien's little books but I'm not a fool.

  • @waymire01

    Well that is majorly disappointing. I adore the Matchstick Books, I own all of them and have colored dozens of pages, probably more pages overall than any other books I own. They are small, interesting without being overly detailed, I adore circular/framed pages, single sided, cute and varied in content.. just perfect. I have been eagerly awaiting the next edition. Was quite bummed when we got it.. in a single sided storybook version so I can't use my favorite mediums. Thought.. "well perhaps it was a one off like the Christmas storybook, oh well, on to the next". Now this. I cannot believe they had texture PRINTED on the pages, that is just.. very underhanded IMO. I don't need color printing for absolutely no reason (the inserts at the front and back are cute but the icon on the back of every page is completely useless). I don't know this character, I don't even know what kind of animal it is.. and there are no other characters in the entire book except for one cameo by mouse. The Matchstick books had developed an entire cast of regular characters (worm, bug, owl, bat, spiders, mom mouse, etc) along with continuous "guest stars" in the form of other animals.. I loved how the last Spring book had so many other animals, it really made it more fun to color because as much as I love mouse it does get a bit boring to color her every page. I wanted some new adventures/settings.. like how mouse and worm went to Paris etc. How awesome would it be if they went on a trip around the world or something?!? See famous sights, meet new local friends.. there are another five or six books in that idea. I have no problem paying more for better paper.. if it were actually better paper. This is simply more due to the color ink.

    Yes, the price went up, but the images are so cute... I usually compare prices of hobbies to those of movie tickets (don't ask, because I don't know), and how many hours of fun they provide. Might seem like a weird calculation to do, but it still comes out as a good value for me 🙂 Sometimes I enjoy little images more than big ones, so I don't see it as paying for intricacy, but for enjoyment.

    • @ArtJourneyUK
      @ArtJourneyUK  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@neencrochet Not implying anything, but this paper is no more premium than the paper in his other books. The difference is that this has been printed as a coloured book, when black & white would have sufficed. I do believe the artist (Morgan) perhaps thought his following would stomach £12 for a Amazon KSP book, but for me, it's too much, for others it might not be. Also maybe this not the fault of the author - it could be Amazon offering printing on textured paper for a premium price without letting on the so-called “texture” is just a printed effect which the artist could easily add to their artwork themselves and have printed on the cheap paper.

    One of the problems with Amazon paper is that the quality varies, even with the regular paper, depending on which location it was printed at. Also, even the "superior" Amazon paper coloring books vary. But from what I've seen, the superior paper isn't actually thicker, it just has a satin finish, which makes it easier to use for markers. I'm curious, does this Morgan O'Brien book has a satin finish or is it matt? Either way, it does sound like he's charging a lot for his book. It would be better if he offered the option of standard, less expensive paper as another choice.

But I know you don't care much for color by number anymore, so I am probably asking the wrong person. Thank you for doing this. I don't like Amazon papaer, but if I love a book and it's not too expensive considering it's on Amazon paper, I would still get it. But yep, not paying £11.99 for it. Fortunately I don't like the images either, I am really, really fussy when it comes to anthropomorphic animals. I prefer them in limited clothing and am always slightly creeped out if they have human-like form. I prefer them still looking as the animal they are supposed to be! Sorry to Morgan O'Brien, his pics are so cute, this one is just not my taste

      I understand what you mean. I believe Morgan said this character is an Aardvark, which I can't see as Aardvark's have long snouts and don't have fluffy tails! I really thought it was a fawn! 🥰

    Wow such a shame. the illustrations are lovely but I wouldn't pay twice the price for the same quality of paper and less pages 😞

      I was really hoping for lovely, pencil friendly paper, so it was a disappointment. I'd happily pay twice the price for lovely textured paper that I can use any medium on., but this isn't that 😔

    I absolutely love the images but it’s just way too expensive for the quality it is. I’ve never had an issue with Amazon paper (I know a lot of people hate it though) and wish he would have just offered this in the standard Amazon paper/price.

      Me too! I have no problem with Amazon paper and markers, which is what I use for these pictures. I'd have loved this book for the regular price and black & white printing! 🥰

    Thank you Lily for this video. I too had purchased this book and I promptly returned it. I find it insulting that an ‘illustrator’ would infer that increased cost was due to improved paper quality when all that had actually been done was a pattern printed on to the paper and I was supposed to be so gullible that I would think this had improved paper quality.
    As it appears the illustrator is reading these comments I’d like to reassure him this is my own personal opinion and inform him that I did not require my husband’s support or endorsement before I wrote this review.

      I was hoping for lovely, pencil friendly paper, so was disappointed too.
      I do believe Morgan thought the paper quality would be better in the "Premium Colored Ink on 88-105gsm white paper" version but I think the extra printing costs are due to the better ink (more expensive printers being used) than better paper. Such as shame as they are lovely illustrations 🥰

      I agree Lily then I would have continued and purchased his books. It was his attitude don’t tell me they don’t review their products prior to publication. I remember back earlier this year when Johanna Basford had problems with her US release the information and apologies she provided to her customers was so professional. Whereas Morgan not once offered his apology to you or his past customers just excuses. The inaccurate description is still on Amazon where I’ve written a review pointing this out so I’ll wait and see!!
      It did make me laugh though when his wife interjected I’d ‘kill’ my husband of 51 years if he’d ever interfered in my professional life. But I guess that suggests Morgans’ naivety. So Morgan if you read this my advice is live and learn.

    The prize is ridiculous. I will not buy it. I got the Matchstick Mouse Autumn book and was so disappointed about paper quality. Don't work at all with color pencils. I'm not interested to pay about crab quality.

    I find the comments here extremely unfair, the artist has been asked to print on better quality paper on his past books in videos and comments, the moment he does this people here complain about the price!?. He has this book set at the lowest cost
    Amazon will allow for their paper at this standard. Comments that he is trying to take advantage is not only untrue, but very wrong ! Keeping in mind this is the same artist that gives free downloadable books and pages !

    • @ArtJourneyUK
      @ArtJourneyUK  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      The issue is; this is not better quality paper. It is the same quality as the £5.49 books. Believe me, if it had been textured, quality paper that worked well with pencils, I would have happily paid the double price. Which is exactly what I said, "for this kind of price, I expect better paper" not the same Amazon paper. The price has been increased due to the unnecessary coloured printing, not due to better paper.

    • @shellyt2906

      The comments are not at all unfair when we were shown actual proof in this video that this was not printed on better paper. She provided and demonstrated the actual paper test that shows that this not better paper. This paper has been tested right in front of our eyes….it is not better. So the artist needs to know that we are being charged more for better quality paper and in fact that is not what is being sold to us. I can only speak for myself and say that I would pay more and have no problems paying more for better quality paper….but when we spend our hard earned money on upgraded books with better paper and then get what is shown in this video…there is no excuse and it makes me feel like I am being scammed.

      I beleive Morgan was trying to get us colourists better paper and do appreciate that but, as shown, it is not better quality paper, which is why this book is disappointing for the price.
