The video was very, very interesting. In my family, we have something similar. The man who gets married receives a ring passed down from his father with our family crest (or one is made for him). So, when I get married soon, my father will have a ring made for me. I’m really looking forward to that day.
I always loved the power of family tradition, maybe because I never had one. My father never inhereted a single piece of land, or anything significant because my family was always poor. Me and my brother started our own businesses with a goal to change that. I was thinking of creating a family crest and signet ring seems like a perfect way to pass it down the line. Thank you for this video Damien!
I would like to express how much I appreciate your explanation video, which has helped me learn more about the stamp ring. My grandfather just gave me the ring this year. This ring has a tragic backstory. I am Chinese. A British woman was the original owner of this ring. Her family's stamp is this. Her husband was my grandfather's uncle. My grandfather said this woman was an only daughter whose father owned a shipyard in the United Kingdom. This ring was given to my grandfather's mother as a memento of their wedding in China. But the sea sank their ship. My family has owned this ring and its coat of arms ever since.
@@DamienBroderick That's neat! My family name being Duncan there turns out to be a ton of info. Definitely going to get a ring after all this amazing history.
🤝🤝 thank you.. I just need to work on my delivery of lines. I almost fell asleep editing this 😂 but always room for improving. Perfection is the enemy of progress right. Just gotta do it. And get better each time.
I had no idea that was the history! I'm shocked because stuff like this is what I love. And to get a letter from you with your signet would be so awesome! lol a girl can dream 😂
@@DamienBroderick I wish you had a PO Box, I still handwrite all of my cards and letters to my friends and clients every week. Everyone in my office makes fun of me because I go through so much postage. I would love to paint you a card.
I thought I could help better flesh out your information about Americans and signet rings. My family has been in America since the 1600’s. My family got their fame and fortune from going on Crusades with King Edward the third. Later in the 1500s after the British military was restructured and lower level knights lost their stations in government many sold swaths of their land and reinstituted themselves in a more modern way into British life or like my family did left to go to the New World. It’s an unknown fact, but many English colonists in the new world had made great names for themselves and had coats of arms created that were recognized by the crown. they to separate themselves from the old money and old guard of British society were their signet rings on their right hand side, and those who came from old money, but were living in the colonies joined in with them and began wearing their family ring on their right hand pinky. I could get into more detail as to why CIGNA rings are not as popular in the United States at least in terms of family crest but I don’t want this to be super long or a jumbled mess of incoherent history.
Hey Damien. Love your videos all the way from Pakistan. I would like to request you to try a Pakistani outfit someday if you’re in the mood. Specifically Shalwar Kameez.
I bought my first signet ring from Signets & Seals in London a few years ago. I wear mine on my right hand not knowing that was the American thing to do. But what’s funny is I chose to wear it on my right hand for the very reason you said. I didn’t want it next to my wedding band. 😅 I’m not married anymore so maybe I’ll change hands? 🤔
It’s history of being an aristocratic ring/royalty ring would actually turn me off it, I personally think all a man needs in terms of jewellery is a watch and a wedding ring and that’s it IMO
I know man that’s why I wrote in my opinion, I suppose if you really wanna get pedantic a man doesn’t really need any of it 😂 mark of all it down as wants rather than a needs eh? 😁
Currently in the process of designing and ordering one. Thanks for the informative video. I was hoping after watching I would be able to make final decisions on size and finger, but I’m even more torn.
Hahaha personally I’d go with a left pinky finger or a right ring finger. As for the design. If it’s not a family crest make it personal to you. A symbol and the first letter of your last name maybe

Literally inspired to now look at my heritage from Scotland and might get myself a ring. Love the history that is being put into modern day fashion.
You definitely should. My aunt tracked our family all the way back to Denmark in 1014 🤯🤯

Wonderful to hear the history behind the signet ring would you say it is more common for men to wear signet rings than a woman?
Definitely more common. But absolutely not exclusively. King Charles famously gifted one to Diana

I mean you could change hands. But also no need if you’re comfortable wearing it there. It’s not incorrect by any means.
Where did you have yours engraved?
It’s a bespoke ring by an Irish master engraver, his brand is called Soul Engraver
Neat
