- Rust has cut short the garlic season slightly but today I manage to dig up a reasonable harvest. It's been one of those strange but wonderful weeks so I catch you up on various adventures as I dig up the last of the leeks: spoiler alert - it includes a 'stray duckling'! And, as promised, we pay a quick visit to Mike to see how his new venture is going - he's made quite a difference already!

The garlic you harvested in the first pallet collar is Cadours
And the second pallet collar is Lautrec pink Garlic. (we bought it together in Malvern 2022/23) a lovely harvest! Kinda glad!!! Saves me sending you the garlic I grew for you 😂😂
Aha! I knew there was a Cadours there somewhere - where on earth did I get Garcia from? I’m just so pleased they haven’t been hit by the rotten allium leaf miner - let’s hope they haven’t gone for the elephant garlic instead! Thanks Danny x
Better late than never on those Garleeks! You have a longer season than I do.
Those garlics look great even though you had rust.
Wow Mike's new plot is coming along....you can see the bones of it now.
I'm so tempted to get stuck in on Mike's plot but it's quite a busy time all around - he's done a great job so far! The garleeks are going in this afternoon - we shall see what happens. The garlic looks fine now it has been cleaned up - they would have grown a bit more if they'd stayed in but the rust was getting quite bad - there's always something! Thanks Robin x
Great harvest Jane! I must admit mine was better last year due to the colder winter. Not a lot of mine split this time as it wasn't too cold but mainly wet. However the unsplit garlics still make good eating!! Mike has worked so hard already on that plot, can't wait until the first plants go in. Happy gardening x
I think the damp winter is to blame for so many things - let's not mention the slugs! Yes they are just as tasty even if they haven't split aren't they - I roasted the tiny ones whole the other day and they were delicious! It will be great if Mike can get some stuff in this year - he's already talking about Christmas potatoes! Thanks Jenny.
Nice harvest of garlic to be honest I got one bulb this year, not sure what happened to the rest. It was a very nice bulb but I don't think it will.last us a year. Love Mike's new plot he's made lots of progress. Kind of feels like a treasure hunting uncovering the different things.
I'm sure that bulb will be savoured! Yes i'm already wondering what Mike will uncover in the final plot at the back - could be anything! Thanks Karen.
I love these videos. Very interesting.
That's nice to hear - thank you.
Nice garlic Jane. The winter and spring we had meant for mixed results but I was happy enough with what I got. Cool video Jane. Al
It's always great when we start getting harvests isn't it - and before you know it we're doing it all over again! Thank you.
Such a cute duck
It was a little beauty!
Lovely garlic & leek harvest jane, that duckling looked so cute hope it found its way safely back to its family, mikes plot is looking so much better already such a huge growing space cant wait to watch when the pond is uncovered. Looks like you had a beautiful day out with lovely food too.
I was half hoping we would have to adopt the duckling and bring it up with the chickens ... but really I 'm pretty sure it's mum would have been on the lookout so hopefully all is well. It's going to be fun rediscovering the pond - I wonder what else is in there - we should have a poll! Thank you.
@JanesGrowingGarden I think a poll is a great idea I'm sure there will be some weird and wonderful suggestions put forward 🤣. I would have been tempted to adopt the duckling too so cute.
@@JanesGrowingGardenused the quiet between Ur talking for sound effects for a video of mine where I needed UK garden sounds, every SFX on here is too loud non natural and sounds like a forest or loud birds..😂😂😂 this only natural sounds could find via UK garden 😂😂😂 so thank you...😉
@@Sol-Cutta glad you found it useful.
Hi Jane just a massive thank you for my tickets to GWL I was able to go on the Thursday instead of the Sunday and it was amazing. Sorry I missed you x
Oh I'm so glad you got there in the end - glad you enjoyed it!
Ooh lots of garlic, I definitely need to plant WAY more this year and your harvest has just confirmed this for me 🙂 That lunch looks scrumptious!
And here's me thinking I need to plant way more as well! The lunch really was amazing - and followed by gooseberry crumble with woodruff ice cream! Thank you.
@@JanesGrowingGarden haha all the garlic!! Wow that sounds divine - making me v hungry 🤤
🐝thanks for the great video🌻 ellyfgarlic is familie of leaks zo that why no rust. Ow wow i missed the new plot video!! need to watch
Let's hope they stay that way! Thank you.
Hi Jane, great harvest, food looked lovely.
You need a mini baler with all that straw, it's a very large plot.
Ha ha - we do! Hopefully once that lot is cleared there won't be too much more - fingers crossed! Let's sort a date out for August and you can come and see for yourself!
@@JanesGrowingGarden That would be lovely.
Subscribed - thank Niall
Oh hey nice to have you here - thank you - and thanks Niall!
Fab video Jane ❤
What a good garlic harvest.
Mike's plot coming along nicely with some good finds. What a difference already 😍
Awww that little ducking, what did you do with it afterwards?
Looks like you had a great time at Gardener's World event. Any bargains this time?
Have a great week ❤
I was really well behaved at GW - although once I heard about Kerry's bargains I wish I'd stayed longer! The duckling was put straight out into the back garden and was last seen going through the gate back up on to the canal - I did search later on but there was no sign of it so I hope it found it's family! I'm actually getting quite excited about Mike's garden now - it's taken a while but it's winning me round! Thanks Linda - hope you've been enjoying some of today's lovely sunshine x
So that is what I have got also!
I have been saving my own garlic for 5 years and probably my worst year, size wise, but rust was so early this year. Jo Devon 🙂
Yes the rust has certainly stalled them growing as much as they would normally - any harvest is good though! Thanks Jo.
I’d say your harvest was a success Jane, I planted 22 and only got 5 to harvest. Thats 5 more than I’ve ever got before though so it’s a win. I will use these to re sow this autumn. If they had rust is it ok to replant them dyu think? Also yay to Mikes he’s really cut that plot down now and so you can see what’s what. Still a lot of work to do though. Will be interesting to see how he progresses. X go Mike 👊🤜🏻x🤛🏻
I think as long as the cloves are sound they should be okay to replant but I must admit I've never tried. Well done on getting five - I bet you'll treasure them! Mike is itching to do more but still has a few weeks to go at work - once that finishes I think there will be so much progress - fingers crossed! Thank you.
Hi Jane & Mike, lovely harvest of leeks, and garlic. Wow! Ot looks,so much better after all the strimming. Lokking forward to the next update. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
He's doing a grand job isn't he - I don't think I'll see him at all once he retires! Thanks Christine.
Great harvest there Jane! Cute duckling.
We just pulled up our first and probably best row - Provence Wight -S.N. Out of 7 we planted, one didn't sprout, one was the size of a large marble and the stem had rotted, we had another that was ok, slightly bigger but still small and the rest were small but have some nice cloves. I don't hold much hope for the other varieties in the other rows as the stems are like spring onions but hey ho at least we got something! lol These and another row were sowed from last year cloves so at least it was kinda free crops.
Wow what a difference already to that plot! Well done Mike! How many reels of strimming wire has he gone through so far? I am sure the chickens would love a trip there.
Take care. x
Ha ha - let's just say he should have shares in strimming wire - he's gone through quite a bit! You never know what you're going to find with garlic until you dig them up so you might be pleasantly surprised - fingers crossed! Thank you.
Hello Jane, Another garlic harvest!!! Seems to me you had a wheelbarrow full of garlic that covered the entire table. This year looks much like the 2022 harvest. Fewer garlics those two years. Did you plant new varieties and were any of them your own replanted?
I planted about 150 cloves last October. 7 varieties a couple new ones. I have been taking ALL of the big cloves to plant for bigger bulbs. I cook with and use all the smaller one. The goal should be reached in a year or two. The goal being to sow all my own garlic without buying any garlic seed stock except for new interesting varieties. Also to grow all the garlic I need for a year from the garden. I am getting closer every year. Thank you for this video you have several great garlic videos. Peace and blessings for you and Mike. The new plot is making big strides in the right direction. Steven
That was the year! The thing is that harvest was so good that anything else seems a bit paltry now! I really can't remember which varieties are which but Danny from GrowUp has reliably informed me that one lot was Cadours and another was Lautrec - I think. There were a couple of cloves from last years bulbs but again - not sure of the varieties. I'm really hoping to get a bigger harvest again next year - I doubt it will be on your scale but I think with the extra plot we should have enough space! Thanks Steven.
His & hers plots...the secret to a long and happy marriage 😊
Ha ha - I think you might be right! Thank you.
i had so much rust too, nightmare, I think its just the allotment way. You don't get rust with elephant garlic as they are not true garlic, its a leek. I think im going to try and grow more and more elephant garlic as the rust is just killing my garlic.
I've never really tried storing elephant garlic - like you say it'd related to leeks so I'm wondering if it's freezable. The rust has been dreadful this year, hand in hand with the slugs - we need a nice cold winter to get things sorted - of course I'll be complaining about that as well if it happens! Thank you.
@@JanesGrowingGarden It stores perfectly, just like normal garlic, just cure it and then store just like garlic.
I have come back to subscribe again
Thank you!
bring some garlic my way plez!
Only in exchange for a posh coffee!
he needs goats, ducks and chickens to get rid of that couch grass!
He’s going to have to make do with a strimmer and a whole load of determination!
Hey I still don’t know when u I should be harvesting my garlic! They all flowered like my onions and same fire the elephant garlic
Once the leaves are turning yellow they’re not going to provide the bulb with much more so when you see them dying back that’s the time to lift. Mine would have stayed in longer if it wasn’t for the rust. Try to nip off the scapes before they flower or all the energy will be diverted into seed making. Sounds like yours are ready - good luck!
@@JanesGrowingGarden yeah I did try to cut of the buds before they flowered but can those still store or is it safe to say need to chop and freeze? thank you Jane!
Great video, garlic looks good too. What did you do with the duckling
Aw it was put back out into the back garden and was last seen waddling up the steps and through the back gate onto the canal - I'm just hoping it's mum found it. I looked later on but there was no sign so fingers crossed. Thanks Jean.
@@JanesGrowingGarden oohhhhh, hope mum found it .
is that Garleek.. i need it
Yep! I'm hoping it's not too late to grow but I'll keep you posted how it does!
compost toilet for the allotment ?
There’s a thought! Thank you.
garlic are like children, whatever will be will be.
Ha ha - full of surprises as well! Thank you.
