    To answer your question about the salted watermelon, salt draws the moisture inside the melon to the surface, giving it a sweeter taste when you bite down. As for the salt, well, sweet n' salty is a very popular flavor combo.

      @@Hauntaku Lots of people say that about things before they actually try them.
      Reminder that you're not seasoning the watermelon, you're just using the salt to draw out the sweetness. If you can taste more than a hint of salt, you did it wrong. Peebs saying in the video that he can barely taste the salt means it was done right.

    More Japanese products. But sadly, not much to translate this time. Just leaving a fun tidbit.
    7:20 - There is no native Japanese word for Banana, instead the Japanese use Katakana for it, which is the characters used to (normally, but not always) represent non-Japanese words. Hence Banana is simply バナナ. Ba-Na-Na.

  • @DigitalxGamer
    @DigitalxGamer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +102

    One of the things I love most about the Japanese language is that there's literally only one way to pronounce each character. Unlike in English where we have silent letters, letters that can be a hard or soft sound depending on what surrounds it, etc. If you see a Japanese word that says "ta" then it can only be pronounced "tah." If you see "ko" then it's "koh." When you see a Japanese word spelled out phonetically, it's actually likely to be easier to pronounce than an English word of the same length. xD

    • @Jake-dh7vh
      @Jake-dh7vh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Pretty true for the most part. Especially when compared to English or like any other Germanic language. Though Japanese does have its occasional oddities, like the lack of a proper distinction between "R" and "L" sounds, diphthongs and omitted vowels, etc.

      @sammer1097 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You seem to be forgetting that Japanese has at least 3 different alphabets, meaning there are multiple ways to write each sound, and it's (as far as I've seen) fairly common for words to mix alphabets (like using both hiragana and katakana together). I'm currently in the process of studying Japanese and am finding this _infuriatingly_ confusing.

    • @Jake-dh7vh

    • @RantingThespian

      Licorice doesn't have flavors. Licorice IS a flavor. What people call red licorice (like Red Twizzlers or Red Vines) is not licorice. Licorice candy is anything flavored with licorce. It is usualy paired with black colors, but can be any color that the confectioner wants to add. Licorice is a flavor extracted from the licorice (or liquorice) plant, and is usually quite intense and (IMO) very harsh and somewhat bitter.

You wouldn't get upset at French/Spanish speaker for rolling their Rs while speaking English just because that isn't how native English speakers pronounce it themselves. But for some reason Weeaboos act like it's a war crime when someone pronounces Ryu with an English R sound instead of the Japanese in-between L/R sound. If the person is legitimately accidentally completely changing a word due to their pronunciation, then go ahead and correct them. If not, then it doesn't matter. Mune is pronounced like Mew'n, close to moon. The Mune'eh sound is a misconception that comes from the Japanese accent as they wouldn't end a word with the Na sound. So saying things like "coffee house" even become Coffee'a House'oo but that's not what we say. It seems to be brought over from words that are mostly or maybe exclusively from Japan as we seek the pronunciation from a native Japanese speaker. I love the music choice for this vid,
    Yoshi’s story has some nice music.
    Also, Ramune/ラムネ is super nostalgic to me, I grew up with that.
    Ps. Please make an ASMR Channel, that’s totally characteristic for you.

    Y'know, me and my family put salt on our watermelon all the time when I was a kid. I never questioned it back then, but now that it's been called out it does seem a little odd. I will say the mix of salty and sweet does something for me. I imagine it's like why people enjoy saltwater taffy or salted caramel.

    • @Peebs
      @Peebs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I like saltwater taffy, salted caramel, and salty pretzels with chocolate, and stuff like that. But salt water makes me gag. And there’s so much water in a watermelon, lol.

    I've never tried Ramune but it seems like an interesting beverage!! As with most things there's always some weird flavors out there for the bold and daring. I don't know if you've tried Jones Soda Peebs but they have this Turkey and Gravy flavor. I just looked it up and I guess they're bringing it back this year. Ugh Smoked Salmon Patte, Broccoli Casserole, Peas, Corn on the Cob, Dinner Roll, Sweet Potatoes and Fruit Cake are some of the other less appealing ones I see here. You know what Peebs, I think we're gonna need you to do a video on some of these Jones Soda flavors.

    Here's something you should eat. A Swedish delicacy, surströmming. Though be warned, you must eat it outside, and you must open the can under water, and eat it with something.

    • @hippieduck
      @hippieduck 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ugh, why are some Swedes so darn keen on suggesting TH-camrs to try Surströmming. It's legit horrendous and your neighbors will hate you. Being assaulted by an awful, intense smell of rotting fish isn't funny for those who didn't sign up for it (newer generations). It lingers for hours, sometimes days. Just skip this one, Peebs. 😣

  • @drbowser166
    @drbowser166 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Anyone else who has had Ramune, have you gently popped the marble down and held your hand there till the initial fizz dies down in a similar way to slowly opening the cap on a shaken up soda so it doesn't explode? Or does everyone smash it and let it get everywhere?

  • @JayJay-qu4nw
    @JayJay-qu4nw 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The plastic containers for ramune lessen shipping costs therefore they make ramune cheaper to attain for sellers but that doesn't stop them from bumping up the price. I do love the glass aesthetic.
