There's a video of JPJ himself on here that was sponsored by D'Angelico where he literally shows that this is how he plays it. I'm surprised so few people knew this before TH-cam, but this is 100% the right way to do it.
Huh... I'm surprised too. I listened closely and figured out how to play it while I was just beginning to learn to play bass in the '80s. It always sounded obvious to me that it needs to be played with a pick.
@@v60i Yep, I just watch the JPJ video. He does a wicked double oct slide back and forth. It's freakin hard lol. Gonna take a lot of muscle memory. Crazy how the little things are so tech.... uggh
Never used a pick in my 8 years of playing. It's kicking my ass. After 8 days I'm finally feeling comfortable Playing this line lol. Awesome. I wasn't anti pick. Just never did before.
I hate this anti-pick mentality. Roger Waters, Paul McCartney, Chris Squire, Sting... The list goes on and on. It all depends on what the artist wants the sound to be. Personally, I love that grungy-raw feel from picks. :D
Every good bass player knows when to use a pick whenever they are in a cover band. Depends what song or band you are covering. You would use a pick on deep purple or grand funk, even the police.
Played with a pick while octaving the open E string with the A string on the 7th fret. That's if you wanna play the way JPJ played it on on the original record. But everybody feels free to perform it the way one pleases.
I don’t know to me it feels more solid and tighter using fingers. At least, when I play it live with a real band. I have tried both pick and finger technique. Either way this song rocks!
First off I already maid my comment. Fact I really do have a shit load of bass guitars. I've Been playing long time. Played in Castro valley with cliff Burton way back in the day..now I just have no love for music business at all.
Right, except for the fact that you are adding a beat to the meter near the end of the vid. The whole tune is in 4, not bars of 5 added (counting the faster quarter note pulse) which you are doing near the end. So, near the end of the vid it is actually incorrect rhythmically.
He's just whacking the strings good with the pick. The guitar is concert-tuned and in the key of E; the only other way to be in key for the E-string is to tune one octave lower --- then the string is so floppy that it's unplayable.

Almost... In the video j.p.j play the riff with a little slide. Except for that... This is exactly what he play

It's D'Addario he actually played it not plugged on any amps
@@justcyan123 yeah. It's hard to hear what he's doing. Wish someone could do a true proper technique over good quality

I need to learn how to use the pick as well. It’s tough at first
Don't bother
Freak! The sound is completly different! I have to restudy this track. Thx for this bass lesson, big up!

Not to forget John Deacon as well.
Entwistle used a pick and hes the goat by far
@Gavin Townsley ???
And those are all guys that started playing guitar first and then picked up a bass...
Finally someone that does it right!
I'm going to study the track with your video, thanks a lot 🎉

Agreed, that's what I hear listening to the isolated bass
And yes I know what I'm talking about..been playing bass for 53 year's.
Own 268 bass guitars.
A little side hobby of mine.
I’m better than you lol
In search for the perfect dozen eggs?
253 basses?
You only need one...
Still, you nailed it about the pick. James jamerson doesnt work here.
That's crazy.........no one needs more than 250 basses, haha.
@@goopvvizard3973 not likely
You are "The Man"...!
There's a video of John Paul showing how and this is the correct way 😲
So much easier to play this riff with a pick. The percussive sound is gnarly as f....
you always want to use a pick if you want ringing strings
I use a pick when my carpal tunnel starts kicking in. Nicely done!

you can't get the double D and double E effect with fingers....

lol I noticed that too.... but didn't notice while I was doing it. too early, not enough coffee at the time
Also needs a pick and to play in time
Started to wet my pants at the :25 mark! Nice job.
perfect
I don't even play bass and it sounded right to me
That’s why you think it’s right is a poor imitation
Awesome! Which strings are on this Bass?
GHS flats
@@razyhotex Are flats generally better than rounds...new to bass playing but very familiar with a jazz archtop and flats.
And JPJ was using flats too
Nailed it
This sounds so bad. Please use an amp next time.
Check out Bobby Vega
So it's about doubling the D and E, am I right?
Shalbeom doubling the open E and the E at the A string 7th fret
so you need pick then, and you ain't foolin'. Why down inside your pocket .... the ... the the .... the the the ... pick.
All you have to do is listen to the original to know its played with a pick.
Known bassists who didnt own a pick. Buy to do it right .............
yep you got it.
that's a floppy ass E string you've got there! how is your tension so low?

Yup.

Je la touche avec mes doigts Seulement, biensur ça c écoute tout differente
This is only half "correct". Watch JPJ do it...... v=eIFjXVYcFIU
Bass-pick 👎
Basse
Ass a bass player I 99% play with my fingers! Hence why do Bass Players make great lovers? THEY USE ALL THERE FINGERS! ALL KNOWING!
Yep!
Use both though, why limit yourself
There are many different ways PERHAPS
I agree
Sounds completely wrong
Was ist daran gut???
Real bass players never use a pick... It feels foreign to me to use a pick to play bass
tell that to Carole Kay
John paul jones picked with a pick.
Yep!!!
@@misterauctor7353guitar players that picked up bass
Use both. As a guitarist too, I also play with pick or fingers
que horror, vai tocar uma guitarra então.
Victor Wooten wouldn't use a pick
