I flew on first US Carrier flight (Pan Am) out of Narita, back in late 70's. Love the English signs on subway, now. That was not the case back in the day!
1:00 Those tunes are so funny! :-) Hearing them, I half expect Hello-Kitty to slide down some rainbow and run around the platform, yelling Japanese greetings in a high pitched voice.. hahaha...
While I agree that Haneda is much closer to the city and thus more convenient, Narita really isn't that bad either in comparison. The Keisei Skyliner highspeed train goes right into Ueno station was amazing when I visited in October 2012. Wasn't as expensive as many people were making it out to be. Especially when compared with how expensive the rest of Japan is. I guess what it really comes down to is whether you're trying to get to East or West Tokyo.
When I visit Japan for the first time - which should hopefully be soon, I’m putting cash aside when I can! - I’m definitely exploring the country rather than only sticking around the city flown into, and air travel combined with Japan’s renowned trains makes that quite appealing :) I think it’s very cool that widebodies are used on domestic routes over there; it’s a world away from over here in the UK, where the A320 family is used pretty much everywhere on BA’s domestic routes!
03:43 you'll be surprised that there used to be a 747-400D used in domestic flight. Boeing 747-400D was made with Japan airlines. But still, 777-200 or -300 and 787-9 is used in domestic flights nowadays. Also, Airbus A350-900 will be flying for domestic fights in Japan at September.
When my Army unit flew to Camp Higashi-Chitose in 2005 for a US-Japanese training exercise, we flew ANA to Sapporo/Chitose and took Air Do back to Haneda on the return flight. The dash from Narita to Haneda by bus on both occasions was epic... :)
Btw it's not unnecessary melodies, that's a different tune in every station in Tokyo, so you could tell at a glance of you're not paying attention to the sign or asleep on couch
Nice trip report! It's quite cool to see B767 doesn't have winglets and the big TV nowadays. I always love watching domestic airline like Air Do. It's cool to know that plane was bought from ANA and that plane was really old (23 years) but still looks new. Thanks for sharing this amazing video.
David - the melodies are specifically for incoming announcements - inbound and outbound trains, timing, etc. You will get used to it ... The longer you live in Tokyo. 😊
For me while watching your video: Lounge - 0 Boarding - 3/3 Cabin Overall - 3/3 Amenity Kit - 0 Food - 3/3 IFE - 0 Toilets - 0 Crew - 3/3 Total - 12/21 Overall - 1.7/5 A very lively airplane. From the livery to the safety video. So unique. Great video. Please do a Philippine carrier review if can. 🙂
Everyone know that there’s 1 plane in Naha that’s operated by Air do from Tokyo it is normally a nine operated flight because it flys to Hokkaido from Honshu
Yayyyyy!!! An Air Do trip report, I have been waiting for someone to do this! I also like Narita because I would like to sight see Chiba Prefecture while taking NEX. It is simply beautiful!
This is an ex ANA 767. The wall pattern on the bulkhead/galley areas gives it away with the white squared pattern. Perhaps not surprising though since Air Do is part owned by ANA.
Great video! Japan is the country that I want to visit the most. I love video games in addition to aviation! And they still have arcades, and some great retro game stores.
+Robert Scheck, those people with masks probably have colds. That's a very common sight in Japan. That's out of pure respect and consideration for their fellow citizens - they don't want to pass their cold viruses on to others. I really, really admire and envy how civilized the Japanese are!
There was extensive research into the arrival tunes at Japan's rail stations which unfortunately I can't quite recall as to the precise conclusions but needless to say for some reason they were found to be beneficial.
Not the emptiest flight, was once on a FlyDubai flight from Dubai-Najaf and there was 7 people in the all Economy cabin, me and my family and this couple. Was a nice flight, the flight attendants let us choose our own rows and we just lifted the armrests and slept. Was quite fun xD!
Everything is so clean! And I really like that little AirDo bear guy, did you buy the one they were selling in the magazine? Thanks, nice report Mr. David.
wow it amazing that air do still flying :) + simply aviation you should buy airlines magazine ( in japan ) if you like flying it a great magazine but only in japanese lol
Tokyo Haneda has the highest landing fee of any airport in the world. Closely followed by Tokyo Narita and KIX. I think the fee is around $5000-$6000 per flight.
The city in the "good morning Sapporo" part at 11:22 was probably Chitose, which is fairly large already and close to the airport. New Chitose Airport is too far from Sapporo for the plane to overfly the city so low on approach, and Sapporo city is further north (after the airport) for someone coming from Tokyo.
Also, in the previous scene one can see a relatively straight and smooth coastline. That matches the south coast of Hokkaido near Chitose, but not the very much curved bay near which Sapporo city lies on the north coast. My guess is that your plane came over the south coast (well, it had to anyway), overflew Chitose and then turned around 180º to land southbound. Google Maps shows that the airport runway is oriented north-south and lies just south of Chitose city, so everything fits.
Those "unnecessary melodies" are played in the station to annouce the departure of the train... They're deployed as a nicer and less annoying/stressful alternative to the bells 😀 especially in the hassle of commuting
@Simply Aviation it seems like the unnecesary melody function as a sign that u can aboard the train or so😅😀😀 The plane looks so wide inside...the safety instruction is so cute! The cup is so cute 😍😍
Does anyone know if ANA runs Air Do or also a 767 on the Wakkanai to Haneda flight? Nice trip report, I also recommend taking Star Flyer(especially to Kitakyushu or Fukuoka), it's like a boutique airline.
Yeah, but my hotel was in Shinjuku, not Ueno. And from Shinjuku it's at least 90min by NEX to Narita and approx. 45 to Haneda by Yamanote and the Monorail...^^
Which summer? If it's summer in Austria, that's mid-2017, but if it's summer in Australia, only in December or in early 2018 now... Anyway, people in tropical or subtropical locations (which includes parts of Australia, such as Queensland) usually rarely even mention seasons and don't use them to mark the time. From Europe, they operate flights from Amsterdam and London. They have the nicest staff ever! I'm not lying!. Anyways, thank you for reading this comment. Another great report, David! I love Japan's politeness and cleanliness. And they seem to be extremely efficient as well. Keep the reports coming.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting! :D
13:26 they even have Air Do sun shades with the bear on it for the cockpit.
HAHA, OMG I didn't even realize that! That's so cool! :D Very consistent marketing^^
Japan might be not so big, but is has enormous lenght. A flight between Sapporo and Fukuoka will take about 2,5 hours, to Okinawa even 3,5.
I know. ;)
Toras Do you mean height? North to south is height, and east to west is length.
Toras .
And it looks literally like a j
Its pretty much the size of the (3/4 i think) East Coast in USA
Btw it's not unnecessary melodies, that's a different tune in every station in Tokyo, so you could tell at a glance of you're not paying attention to the sign or asleep on couch

I've never ever in my life heard of this airline, Air Do! Thank you for the trip report :) I love these double reports per week
Also why do some people have masks on?

From the video it looked SUPER clean on subway.

Me expecting to see the aviation around the world, usually around Europe and America.
Now, that's my home town!!
The Runway at New Chitose Airport has yellow markings? 11:50
looks epic!
Mohammed AlShariff Must snow there alot, I believe it helps pilots see the runway when covered in snow
PhantomUniform0 Interesting...
PhantomUniform0 wouldn't the snow be cleared ,like, all the time?
The runway is yellow marked in the Tōhoku and Hokkaidō regions
OHHHHH what an awesome video! Your videos never keep me bored! Continue with the excellent work! :)
Thank you very much! :D Very glad to hear that!

May I ask what you do for a living? Or do you just love flying to random places and making videos of the trip
I watched this video for the third time and I just realised that at 10:22 it's kind of cloudy instead of sunny

Awesome Flight! Is it fun flying all the time?
Thank you! Yes it's fun every time. ;)
It's also 50 minutes when you fly from Manila to Iloilo, but it's 55 minutes when you fly from Iloilo to Manila.
You should consider flying around Australia
Jack Dent yes that would be good if he did
+Kyr4nB 06 I am going to this summer 😏

Adelaide???

Simply Aviation Yeah.. Really excited for AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines too!
Is 2-3-2 typical for a 767? I don't know why but I always though they were 3-3.
5:52 :lol the safety video Is so weird tho
Great Video, David 👍
