Seaweed has long been a staple food in Japan. But the chunky, slimy kelp hauled into fishermen’s boats is also starting to attract international attention for its potential as an eco-friendly supercrop. Research is flourishing into new applications for the marine plant - from carbon absorption to reducing methane emissions from cattle. Other countries are looking to Asia’s seaweed savvy to develop their own industries.

If whatever (pollution, climate change, human activity etc) that caused the seaweed to recede in the first place isn't fixed how does planting more help. If conditions are right/healthy the seaweed will spread by itself.
