I've seen the movie and read the book. The biggest difference is that near isn't in the book. The book pretty much goes off the Mangas continuity if Light got caught in the manga the same way he did in the movie. Near is brought up i think a couple times but he doesn't appear in the story.
I love this movie sm, it warms my heart seeing L taking care of Near and Maki. The final scene always makes me cry like a child
