I wouldnt trust every horse with every child. But a horse I had was over reactive to lots of things. Not frightened or abused. Just a drama queen. But if there kids in her paddock she was totally the reverse. Quiet tolerant patient. They know.

It can go the other way though - I once had a tourist put three pound coins down my boot! When it came to dismounting at the end of the guard, my heel dug into them as I hit the ground!! Interesting concept on tipping the entertainment I guess!!

I never pet, scratch or do anything with an animal without first asking the owner and if it is a working animal such as above I would never interfere. These horses and their Soldier partner are brilliant, I'm particularly impressed with this section of armed guards. These horses appear very inquisitive to their surroundings the going ons of these people and not upset even with the cheek of the overcrowding. Majority of people are respectful. They go up they get the picture, they stroke the horse and they move on... Then we've the asshats that move in and shove themselves in for the picture in front of others or don't have respect to read the horses language and rudely have no respect for others never mind the soldier and horse on duty. These Cleveland bays are exceptional in behaviour. If they didn't like this from tourists they would prevent them. Gives the horses something to watch all these tourists, probably less boring than no one there at all.

When the replacement guard and horse moved in, I could tell he had a friend he wanted to be with by the way he was acting, but I thought it was the horse that was leaving the arch. Only to discover that it’s the horse in the arch on the other side of the gate! They were commiserating together, lol.

Practice. British armed forces are trained in all weather conditions. Soldiers are often sent on very long arduous runs in full combat gear carrying up to 50lbs in their backpacks. So it’s no surprise really that they cope in uniform on hot days. However it’s not unusual for some soldiers to succumb to excessive heat exhaustion in the summer months.
I am trying very hard to understand the motivation of people mobbing this guard just to stroke a horses nose or get a pic while they touch it! No courtesy whatsoever.

They also have to clean and polish their tack and their uniforms, and muck out the stables, feed and groom the horses, exercise the horses, etc. They work a long day for their salary, not hourly, pay!

So many parents place or even push a child closer to the horse than they are. It is difficult to see a 50-100 pound child shoved within inches of a 1000 pound horse that is doing its best not to accidentally bang its giant skull on a tender human. Have you ever been struck on the chin/head/face by a well-meaning horse when you came too close? Pain & bleeding & possibly bone/cartilage fractures.

There is no need to gather around like that. I would get a group together and stand close to the tourists, not allow them a breeze. Wonder how that would go over@?
This is the Kings troop, they pull the gun carriages, they take over the guard duty at horse guards whilst the Hcav are on holidays or doing others duties else where, the blues and royals are either in Germany, musical ride, or Edinburgh..

That awful, awful day had far reaching affects, Michael Pederson who was riding Sefton on that day later stabbed himself and his two children to death. I do wonder whether there was any mental health support for those involved.

Irish Draught or ID crosses from Ireland. Not Cleveland Bays although the Queen was supportive of that breed. Both lots are handsome horses.

A little thing from the past, Sefton (survived the Hyde Park bombing), was also nicknamed Jaws by the grooms and his rider (amongst others). Jaws, was because he bit everyone!

@@Ann-vc1pyand he was still at it when he returned to duty! He retired at about 21 I think and went to what is now The Horses Trust, used to be The Home of Rest for Horses. That awful, awful day had far reaching affects, Michael Pederson who was riding Sefton on that day later stabbed himself and his two children to death. I do wonder whether there was any mental health support for those involved.
@j.ksmith7432 it was horrific. The images of that day haunt me still.
There was one mare that had far more severe injuries than Sefton, and she thankfully survived too.
We do have decent Mental Health available now, sadly the NHS isn't that good. I don't mean all of the NHS, just the Mental Health side of things.
