  • Wow ! Check this out. Back in the days when Dubai was Deira and not much else. I keep looking out for the skyscrapers and there aren't any.

Yes I remember at the time I filmed this the hotel I stayed in was full of Kuwaiti refugee families - some people called them the richest refugees in history.
I'm going back to UAE shortly to take video of the exact locations I filmed two years later in 1994 to contrast the past with the present. It's all previously unseen video from 1994 and I think the difference you will see between the two will be astonishing. Coming this year....

Well here's the nutshell version. This is the year that the Dubai Shopping Festival really got big. The neighborhood where I was living in was practically rebuilt (the streets, the storefronts, everything) changed dramatically, and Dubai started to look more like that until I left in 2007. I'm pretty damn sure that 2009 was another major milestone year since it was when the metro finally opened and public transport became worth something. Of course I wouldn't know for sure since, as I said, I left in 2007.
I should mention that prior to that, the bus system in Dubai was not worth a damn. I hated every single second of it. It was slow, spotty, and extremely unreliable. The traffic was so insane it was actually quicker to walk a kilometer or two than it was to take the bus that distance.
