    My name is Sam Smyers and in this video I go over how to use the multiband dynamics plugin that is a stock plugin in Ableton Live. This plugin uses upward and downward compression AND expansion, and I go over all of those types of processing in this video!

    Wow, Sidechaining using multiband dynamics as opposed to normal compressor gives much more flexibility! Nice one 😁

      Ableton's normal compressor has also possibility to sidechain only certain frequencies. Just click EQ on the right side of Sidechain and choose the band.

    Less than 2 minutes in, thank you for the incredibly clear explanation of expansion as opposed to compression! Like earned.

    Dude this is an amazing video. I never had an idea of how useful this is and how many headaches I could've avoided if I had learnt how to use this plug-in sooner, cheers mate.

    Very interesting tool, so much you can do with downward expansion, changing the character of samples, probably better to use than. an eq

    Using a multiband compressor is super nice since it allows me to make my music, which is sample based and very east coast, sound much cleaner by targeting particular frequencies and compressing different bands. It's one of the very few go-to's i have, even if it's only very subtle usage

    Why haven't ANY of the tutorials I've watched on compression mentioned the multiband dynamic compressor?? Seems like it has a lot more utility than the standard Ableton compressors when it comes to controlling what is side chained. I find the visualization on the multiband dynamics to be so much better but maybe that's just me.

    4:32 Peak and RMS are different ways to compress audio, it has nothing to do with speed. Peak compression is only compressing the peaks, the short term LUFS, and RMS compresses the overall volume of the input which is the integrated LUFS. As expected, RMS is used for smoother balancing and Peak is for only squashing the harsher transients.

    I have a question! I'm trying to reduce bleed from cymbals in my snare by applying downward expansion in the high range, around 2.5khz and up. The problem is that I'd like to trigger the threshold using a DIFFERENT range in the snare, somewhere in the midrange. I've tried setting up a "sidechain only" track where I solo that frequency in the snare and use that in the side chain, but the threshold in the multi band dynamics is not being met as it still only looks at those specific frequencies from the side chain. Is there anyway to trigger the threshold for the top end from a different frequency range?

    THANKS for the lesson! The expander seems like a good tool for re-energizing vocals that may have been printed with too much compression. Thoughts?

    totally get the theory behind the band-focused sidechain compression; but I kind of found that:
    1) in your particular example the before sounded better imho : ))
    2) sidechain compression kind of "typically" sucks ALL the air out, on purpose.
    So I'd be hesitant to use this technique, but still, keen to experiment - thanks!

    How do I type in the ratio amount? whenever I do it, I always get 1:0.50

    • @basho5493
      @basho5493 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the only options to change the ratios in ableton MBdynamics are to drag either the blue numerical display up and down, or the sliders left and right.
