      still confused how you got 24 as subnet mask at the end can anyone quickly explain this?

    • @networkingwithh4716
      @networkingwithh4716  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      subnet mask is decided based on how many hosts you want... for ex if you have point to point link then /30 is used,

    • @eighteen4379

      @@alexgonzalez-hy6xe See. The subnet mask was
      11111111.11111111.11111111.00000000
      So here, there are 24 '1's. So '/24' is just a shortcut way of saying 11111111.11111111.11111111.00000000
      Because you know if it is 24 '1's, it will be the first 3 octets.

    Simple and straight forward explanation. The way is illustrated is also clear.
    Nonetheless, not even with CCs on I was able hear the whole explanation clearly. Some people may say is the accent, there's no issue about it.
    The real issue is the speed of the way you talk. Some of us talk faster and some slower but in a tutorial, the ideal is that the way you speak must be clear and have a phase or speed that allows the viewer to understand your explanation.
    With this video, the way you explain the concept of a subnet mask is clear, but the words start to lose the clarity when you can't understand the words clearly, because the speed of the person who speaks is almost like listening "Rap God" by Eminem. And believe me, I enjoy some rap songs, but I've heard slower rap compared with the speed you talk. It ain't terrible, your content will be more enjoyable.
    I tried to see the video with CCs on, nope, didn't help. I watched the video 3 times to check if I was misunderstanding something, nope... I still got lost in some parts. I tried with a slower playback speed (0.75 which was a nice speed, but at 0.50 I could clearly understand every word) and it kinda worked.
    I'll rather a video of 5 minutes where I just need to see it once than a 3:47 video that I watched 5 times.

      @@networkingwithh4716 you're very welcome! Actually if you feel like it helps, you can use captions (this helps deaf people too) and if not, some TH-camrs write the script of the whole video in the description box. It helps also for deaf people and if someone wants to write or save in text your explanation. If you need any help with this, let me know and I'm more than glad to help :)

    Small correction. Since the advent of CIDR, classes don’t exist anymore. Addresses don’t have “default subnet sizes” like in the classful system.

    How would it work if you had a mask that didn't fit neatly into the octets? like /26? Would the host section just have to be a smaller number?

    Im still confused, how do you decide what on the subnet based off the ip address becomes a 255 or 0. Like what numbers in an ip address give me a /16 or /24? What makes it those based off the ip adress?

    78 being the host am I correct?

    • @SMURFwitAM21
      @SMURFwitAM21 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Edited:
      the Network [address space] portion would be
      12. {255.x.x.x}
      the Host [devices connected] portion would be
      34.56.78 {x.0.0.0}

    • @johndripper
      @johndripper 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      u hv to assign a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 if you want to use the last octet here 78 for host id.

    You can tell by the subnet mask ONLY which part of the IP address is the NETWORK part and which part of the iP adress is the HOST part. 255 = 1 = NETWORK part.

    Super good explanation! This shows, that didatics can be a form of art.
    Some questions:
    I think the majority is used to the /24 netmask. What are the benefits of having a smaller network portion? A performance gain? Are there any optimization baked in the TCP/IP protocol, that kick in when the netmask is reduced to amount of hosts needed?

    • @NurDerEffzeh1948
      @NurDerEffzeh1948 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Smaller Network Portions should lead to more hosts. Subnet Masks are classified in 3 Classes
      A: 255.0.0.0
      B: 255.255.0.0
      C 255.255.255
      if the host portion is smaller it reduces the maximum ammount of hosts
