The warnings my teacher gave me and other classmates right before graduating. 1. Make sure you get insurance, because you will come across someone who will try to sue you. It won't be anything you do. These people are the type of people who will try to sue someone who saved their life by performing cpr on them that saved their life. This is why the good samaritan law was passed. 2. Some companies will try to take advantage of you. Overwork you. 3. Some companies will expect you to give massages to clients that are contradictory (clients that should not be giving a massage.. clients that a massage can even be fatal to), because they are only in it for the money. I've had this happen to me. Of course I denied giving the massage. My advice Don't become a MT if you are grossed out about touching other people's dead skin and sweat.. Some people need to to learn how to exfoliate. You will come across people who are so relax they might pass gas.. one minute they are snoring the next they pass gas, and as professional you pretend it's nothing and finish the massage. Lol. Funny but true.
If you are starting out and maybe can't afford insurance (I'm not sure what the rates are either, newbie here) is it realistic to have a waiver that they are getting a massage at their own risk you can both keep a copy of?
I recently graduated massage school and found being a male can be a con...initially. It’s a pandemic now and that hasn’t stopped me from looking for jobs. When I browse, some postings say “prefer females” and I feel discriminated against. Needless to say, I keep telling myself once I do find a place that accept me being a male therapist, I could get steady clientele over time.
I was scrolling through the comments and saw this. First,I'm sorry you have to experience that but don't let it discourage you! Have you thought about being independent? Start your own business with it. You've already completed the schooling which is the most important part. I hope that you do find something and prosper at it!!💕
Speaking as a therapist, I make about $22/hr. If tips were consistent, it would be alright. But since my everyone tips or tips enough, it unfortunately doesn't cut what I need for bills etc.
@Texasgirlinacrazyworld Ah, well, thankfully my situation has changed now. I do a hybrid of working at a spa that pays me $33/hr + very good client tips, and I have a private practice that gives me just enough of a boost that things are going a lot smoother!
I'm definitely considering going to massage therapist school. I have worked as a certified nursing assistant in the nursing home for 14 years. So, I have seen people's bodies. And I am ready for a new career. Thank you for the pros and cons. I wanna work on a cruise ship as a LMT.
Really appreciate the video! Just dropped out of college because I’m not sure what I want to do and have been contemplating going to massage therapy school. You gave a lot of great insight !
I'm considering going into this field. I'm a bio major at a four year college, but I underestimated everything, to put it simply, and am not doing too well. My advisor advised me to attend a different school, two year program, but I don't meet the requirements to attend the program, so I'm thinking of halting school for the moment-if not forever- and going to a two year school where I can go into this field, or be a surgical tech, or optician, or a radiological assistant/tech, or some type of welder. It's quick schooling, less expensive, and the pay is usually generous for a one-two year degree. I considered doing it, but wanted to get out of the house, but since I'm planning on getting a car in the near future, maybe going back home for a year, while working and going to school won't be so bad. I can always come back and get my Bachelor's. I didn't want to. I wanted to get my four year degree in four years, but I know myself and I don't even know what I want to do yet. I'm already behind by a year and a half, so at least this way, I have some work under my belt and if I want to come back to school after a few years of working, I will. But if I'm satisfied and happy with what I'm doing, there may be no point in getting my Bachelor's in Biology. I still want to do it because I love science, I'm just not good at it and fail at everything science related. I need to look at the reality and make some changes. So, here I am, typing accidentally long paragraphs on youtube. I might go into this, I might not. But so far, it seems like a pretty decent career.
Mind if i ask you what you ended up doing and how it’s going for you ? Read this comment and you actually related very well to my current position now 😅 Still unsure what i’m doing and what career I want & haven’t been doing well (only i’ve been studying at a 2 year, longer than I should be)
I'm in Massage therapy school now. Today was my first day. The job Market for the north-west suburbs of Chicago, it's about 45 minutes away from Chicago, the market is paying a lovely salary. Of course Chicago is a big city. Clinics are hiring, cosmetic clinics are hiring. Wages from 29 to 50an hour. The money is good but, my professor did say if I decide to be my own contractor I must get my own insurance though. I haven't checked out the benefits. I just been looking at jobs and salaries so far. I'm really excited. I do want to relocate somewhere in Los Angeles at some point. I do want to have my esthetician and cosmetology license along with the massage therapy. My goal is to have a spa/salon. I do want to start with an hour job, build my clientele. Save and work on my business on the side until I'm ready to be my own boss.
I have been considering going to massage school for several years now, and just as I was getting closer to pull the trigger, and as my best friend went to school and is now completed his program and doing fairly well for himself. I actually ended up fracturing my proximal phalanx of my pinky finger and it healed with a malunion. I had to get several x-rays and CT scans and I feel like my hand has a lot more information and arthritis already setting in. However there is a part of me that thinks maybe Doing that massage therapy program could actually be better for my hand in someway. Because I am getting more exercise for it. I’ve always enjoyed learning about natural alternative remedies through herbalism as well as essential oils. I know they have different techniques where you can limit the use of your hands and also use other parts of your body like your elbows or even bamboo etc. i’m not sure I have such a good opportunity to go to school in Texas because it’s so close to where I’m at. Plus it’s a very affordable program. I just don’t know if I’m ready to commit to that yet. I would look at doing massage more like a side hustle part-time on the evenings and weekends around a full or part-time job at hopefully offers benefits
I work in Orange County, no PTO, no 401k, no medical, etc. However, I still love being a massage therapist- I still make enough to invest in my own plans and would recommend to anyone who feels that LMT would be a good fit for themselves.
Thank you for this video. I'm only a freshman in high school but I have been thinking about becoming a message therapist for awhile and researching to make sure I really want to do this and what to expect.
Graduated last year and have an opportunity out of state! Of course since we are in the middle of a pandemic I did think twice about having another source of income just in case they shut down massage in that state. So I got certified as a phlebotomist just in case for backup. However, I am so excited! Since the pandemic happened it slowed down the process of graduating and preparing to go work as well. But I appreciate this video, makes me even more excited to go work now and finally do what I’m so passionate about 🙏🙂
Here in Canada, the standard is a 2 year, 2200 hour program. After paying $7000 out of pocket, I have a remaining $19,000 CAD student loan debt. Crazy how different it is between countries! Loved the video
someone who wants to be an independent contractor (like myself), should I invest into my own materials, get a cert in Esthetician, should I make consent forms? how to attract contractors like other spas and businesses? make deals for first time customers? lastly, what type of insurance I need?
I see this video is a few years old. Just wondering if you're still working in the field. Ive read that most LMTs only work 3-5 years, but I think this depends on their modality and work environment.
I am graduating soon but wish I knew more details of different modalities. Even deep pressure tissue massages, my deep pressure is questionable. Most of the things we did was Swedish massage. Not terrible, but just want to improve and I am nervous. How do you get the nervous feeling away when you massage?
Think you could have prepared a bit more for this, but overall this was good in comparison to some other 'Massage Pro & Con' clips. Glad you mentioned the feast or famine thing. If you work for yourself in this profession, you only make income when you have clients; no clients means no income. Also when you work for yourself, there are no benefits; no paid sick time nor vacation time, no retirement plan, no collecting time and a half for overtime nor holidays. You only generate income when you get clients. Additionally, LMTs get solicited from time to time for more than a 'massage,' and you need to figure out how to deal with that; do you turn them away, refer them to someone that you know of that does that kind of stuff, or when you're in a famine stage do you chance it 'cause you need the income? This can be a very rewarding profession, but it's not for everybody.
I am currently a nurse and I am looking to make a career change into being a massage therapist. I am also a certified yoga teacher and ayurvedic health coach.
En Argentina realmente mucha gente trabaja "en negro" o fuera del sistema, pero si trabajas por tu cuenta también tenes la opción de registrarte como monotributista y pagar impuestos. También hay una lista de obras sociales a las cuales podes afiliarte.
Hey man, a little late to your video haha. I’m 20 years old and I recently have gotten interested in becoming a massage therapist. Is it hard doing this job as a man? I know some people prefer things differently. One of my biggest questions, hopefully you see this!!
I am in massage therapy school now and insurance is one of the most important things and I’m in New York so I gotta research that. Great vid. I’m looking forward to more facts on pros and cons to being a MT . Appreciate the info! What else should I expect as MT?
Thanks for the video, I'm still deciding whether or not to jump into the program. How does the hour long massage session feel? Is it exhausting? Fulfilling? Painful? Does it feel like forever? Or does it go by fast?
I am currently in a massage therapy program and I have to say, that hour absolutely flys by for me. I always feel like it's not enough time to address most people's whole body effectively. It can be exhausting. And it can be painful. But proper body mechanics minimize it. And more often than not, I'm energized by giving massage. People genuinely appreciate and need the work you are doing. It's very fulfilling.
I start school in September, how did you go about getting into chair messages at marathons and stuff? Did you do it for free as a way to self promote yourself?
I've been considering getting a massage therapist license.... how has it been for you personally during this virus? are massage therapists considered essential? i think they would be...
If you are starting out and maybe can't afford insurance (I'm not sure what the rates are either, newbie here) is it realistic to have a waiver that they are getting a massage at their own risk you can both keep a copy of?
Hi, am from Singapore, do you think it is better to go overseas eg. Canada to enroll in a Massage Therapy school for 2 years or stay local and take private courses which are way shorter that give WSQ Certificates?
Thanks for the video. I got a question... when you all (therapy masseuse) talk about hurt body and hands is it perhaps the first days or is always? I ask about because that's scary to me. I know that each body is different but I don't want to start to study and later be suffering in each section, you know. Lol
Great video. Have you come across physical therapist going back ti college to study massage therapy? Is it worth it as a part time job to do massage therapy? Thank you
I'm 22 and not in school rn. Recently Ive made the choice to try and get into the massage field. Can I get anybody to reply and give me some tips and insights into becoming a massage therapist
Male massage therapist here, I never realized how much of a con it can be by just being a male in a female dominanted field. I know it comes with the territory but I remember my first year into my career, on how it would bum me out when I would hear from the clients on how they refuse to be worked on by me.
Absolutely not. There was a 70 year old graduate where I now attend. She graduated, moved to a 55+ community in Florida and now makes BANK 💸 💶 ‼️. Go for it and best wishes to you sir🫶
Watching this in 2022 and laughing when you said, we may be able to work in 2 weeks!🤣 Bruh, covid shut everything down! Thanks for the informative video though.❤
Do you find another con would be people making sexual advances, specially if your a women? Im not a therpaist myself, but I know my GF wants to do this.
Thats is definitely one con as well and I’m a male. I would say she should find a company that will protect her if anything should happen. There are businesses that might get upset if she would report such a thing. Also finding a position that specialize in couples massage it helps that another therapist is in the room with you.
@@akm960 Have you ever had women make sexual advances? I am in mail considering doing massage therapy and I am very concerned about the potential. I am 34 years old so I am a lot older than most I have a professional courtesy however you just never know
@@DanielGennaro To be very honest women(in my experience) are a lot less likely to make those kinds of advancements and if they do its very subtle. As long as you stay professional and set clear boundaries you should be fine. Another about female clients is that some do not prefer to have a male massage therapist(don’t take it personally its just how it is). I was 29 when I got my massage license and first massage job. It was the best decision I’ve ever made.
@@akm960 that is so good to hear my friend. I have been looking into it for several years and I am pretty heartbroken because about two years ago I fractured the proximal phalanx of my pinky finger. I do have good mobility with it, but the joint healed with a slight malunion. So I don’t know, I am mostly doubting myself and whether it will give me more arthritis and inflammation in the long run. Definitely bothers me a little bit but it is not completely debilitating. The school I was looking at starts up next month and I have such a good opportunity to go there because I live so close to it, I just don’t know if I’m ready to pull the trigger yet. I definitely want to combine it with all kinds of other healing therapies if I did such as naturopath a herbalism, Reiki energy healing as well as maybe facial rejuvenation treatments because I like that kind of anti-aging therapies
@@DanielGennaro If i was you I would probably speak to a doctor about you concerns with your pinky. I will say thats one finger we hardly use to massage with plus there is other massage techniques that don’t require your hands that u can utilize.
I’m 20 and I have no clue what to do for a career path but massage therapy has always been interesting to me. I’m just worried about a steady income but it seems like you can make a decent living off of this career!
@Kenya Carter that’s exactly how I feel!! I feel like I could do good at so many things but I want to be happy and have a stable income as well!! Thank you for the response!
One thing about being a massage therapist was the flexible schedule. But if u are a new therapist go into business for your self especially if you are a MALE. Stay away from Massage envy and massage heights very cookie cutter places.
I’ve been at this for 14 years. I have worked in some big industries including the government. I might make a video but I am VERY honest. To keep it brief I don’t recommend Massage therapy as a career to anyone.
It certainly is and I had my doubts about being a male massage therapist, I still have been considering going back but unfortunately I fractured a couple bones in my left hand as I was coaching Wrestling about a year ago and I’m really not sure how long I could last. However I think there are a lot more men in the field and I think a lot of women actually prefer men. My body just finished his school he is 34 years old like me, and he already has like 15 client scheduling every week with him.
Mmmm I think there is a grain of truth to that but not entirely. I think the majority of people do not care what you look like they just want a good massage
Pros:
1. Qualification is fairly fast to obtain (at least 9 months.).
2. Flexible shifts.
3. Involves movement rather than sedentary behaviour.
4. Work environments are versatile.
Cons:
1. Be available when everyone else is available (working night shifts/ weekends/holidays).
2. Labour Intensive.
3. Benefits are most likely unavailable.
4. Salary is a personal responsibility (IF self employed) .
Gathering info, and doing research on massage therapy before I decide to go to school
Do it, its an excellent job, love it over a decade later
I just applied!

My advice
Don't become a MT if you are grossed out about touching other people's dead skin and sweat.. Some people need to to learn how to exfoliate.
You will come across people who are so relax they might pass gas.. one minute they are snoring the next they pass gas, and as professional you pretend it's nothing and finish the massage.
Lol. Funny but true.
😂
The most useful pieces of advice that I found in these comments 🤣
This is real. Idk if I can deal with farting let alone a smell coming from it 😂
I can deal with farts, the super loud snoring has to go! Bye! But be professional... lol

Where I work I was blessed to pick my own days and hours. So I work Mondays, Wednesday, Thursdays and Saturdays from 3-9 with 5 clients per day.
That sounds very reasonable, what was your yearly pay with those hours and what place was it?

Thank you for this video. I am still debating whether to go to school for this
Hey do you know how long it takes for the school and how much it cost to become one??
I've been considering getting a massage therapist license.... how has it been for you personally during this virus? are massage therapists considered essential? i think they would be...
Depends on the state.
Yea I think depends on locations because spas are not essential but MT working at nursing places might be
Very informative. Thank you
Thank you for the video. Still thinking about switching my career. Just subscribed. Research research research
If you are starting out and maybe can't afford insurance (I'm not sure what the rates are either, newbie here) is it realistic to have a waiver that they are getting a massage at their own risk you can both keep a copy of?
Thx for the useful info sir! Subscribed 🙏🏻
Is the program hard or easy?
I'm going to be a massage therapist + professional tarot card reader.
Hi, am from Singapore, do you think it is better to go overseas eg. Canada to enroll in a Massage Therapy school for 2 years or stay local and take private courses which are way shorter that give WSQ Certificates?
What is wsq
The pay in Canada seems to be phenomenal right out of school $85-100/hr and are in very high demand here.
Salary plus tips think about that!
Thank you
That's what I was going to do. Study PTA then go to massage therapy
Thank you! :)
Great Video!!
hi im thinking about getting certified at my community college. the only thing is that im 6 foot, do u think im going to develop chronic back pain?
I felt that Blue Cliff, where studied is a better school than Virginia College. Now I'm wondering what was all the hype about.
I'm 22 and not in school rn. Recently Ive made the choice to try and get into the massage field. Can I get anybody to reply and give me some tips and insights into becoming a massage therapist
Nice info, I appreciate it.
No problem, let me know if you any questions. Thanks!
Male massage therapist here, I never realized how much of a con it can be by just being a male in a female dominanted field.
I know it comes with the territory but I remember my first year into my career, on how it would bum me out when I would hear from the clients on how they refuse to be worked on by me.
Good vid, I always considered becoming an electrician, but it turns out a massage therapist makes more money than an electrician here in my state.
What state ?
If your going in for the money you will burn out very fast
I'm a 67 year old man is it too late for me to become a massage therapist?
no sir! We had a retired fire captain in my class and he said he loved it and didnt regret it for a second!
Yes
Absolutely not. There was a 70 year old graduate where I now attend. She graduated, moved to a 55+ community in Florida and now makes BANK 💸 💶 ‼️. Go for it and best wishes to you sir🫶
No sir!! You are still young ‼️🫶
It’s never to late
Bro this video is useful! Thanks

I mean its better then working construction or other shit job tbh
One thing about being a massage therapist was the flexible schedule. But if u are a new therapist go into business for your self especially if you are a MALE. Stay away from
Massage envy and massage heights very cookie cutter places.
Why stay away from those places?
I’ve been at this for 14 years. I have worked in some big industries including the government. I might make a video but I am VERY honest. To keep it brief I don’t recommend Massage therapy as a career to anyone.
Why?
I’m interested in the field but few like it’s a female dominated career
It certainly is and I had my doubts about being a male massage therapist, I still have been considering going back but unfortunately I fractured a couple bones in my left hand as I was coaching Wrestling about a year ago and I’m really not sure how long I could last. However I think there are a lot more men in the field and I think a lot of women actually prefer men. My body just finished his school he is 34 years old like me, and he already has like 15 client scheduling every week with him.

If you're not attractive, DO NOT waste $20,000!
It has nothing to do with how good you are at it, or how good you did in massage school.
Mmmm I think there is a grain of truth to that but not entirely. I think the majority of people do not care what you look like they just want a good massage
You should do a video. I totally believe this and have heard this from other massage therapist.
I could definitely see why you’d say that. People generally would want an “attractive” person touching on them in the manner that MT have to

Thank you
