  • J. Robert Oppenheimer, a physics professor at the University of California, Berkeley, is best known for creating the atomic bomb during WWII as the wartime head of the Los Alamos Laboratory. He famously witnessed the first atomic bomb detonation in New Mexico in 1945 and later quoted the Bhagavad Gita saying "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." This documentary examines Oppenheimer's life, from his early years to his involvement with nuclear physics and his later advocacy for nuclear weapons controls, featuring brand new interviews and insights from those who knew him and those impacted by his legacy.

That plutonium device did not take 100s of thousands of workers. The material for the implosion bomb came from a small fast breeder reactor. The gun device was the one requiring huge numbers of people to separate U-235 to weapons grade.

Ok... I see what you are saying about the plutonium production reactor at Hanford Washington. However... it was fueled with highly enriched uranium produced at the K-25 plant in Oak Ridge Tennessee. The amount of enriched Uranium used in Little Boy was far eclipsed by the amount used to fuel the B Reactor producing plutonium. So it's fair to say that thousands of people were needed to produce plutonium...

I find it very interesting Harvard was very anti Semitic during his time there. And yet still is in recent news events pertaining to the head of Harvard and her lack of understanding and actions to stamp out such behaviour…

Harvard has always been antisemitic . First, Jews were barred for over 200 years. Eventually, Harvard allowed a small quota of Jews to attend. In this day and time, there is an unwritten rule that admissions keep that quota in the name of student diversity.

He was intelligent and privileged. He was not only a scientific capability designed atomic bomb projects. There were 1000000 practical and physical theorists' brains( 🧠) besides the American financial miracle capability, which subdued all other force shapes. on the planet.

It is absolutely amazing how Germany, Russia and Japan had some very brilliant scientists, but the Allies - Anglos from England & America - would somehow in the USA devise a perfect setting with the best supervisor from the military and science - Oppenheimer - to solve the Engineering of the first Atomic Bombs. I firmly believe that Providence provided for the best Custodians for this device. Imperfect as we were, we were Gifted. Thank God.

Yes Susan, I know. I was referring to the Countries of Britain & the United States that are connected through the original American Colonies. Without these two countries cooperating during WW II the war could have had another result. These two countries gave tremendous support through Lend Lease to Russia which contributed greatly to Germany's defeat First. I am of German and Irish (Gentile) heritage but an American, nevertheless. Thanks for the reply. @@SusanRubinstein

Perfectly absurd. This business of ascribing human events to the magical machinations to a sky god is wholly ridiculous. To suggest that horrible doomsday incinerator would be a gift of the gods is nasty stupidity. They built it at a time and place for one damn dumb reason: because they could.
