  • This is SANYO 1984 Boombox M9706.
    Radio was okay, cassette deck did not work.
    I found out that NAKAMICHI idler tire was broken.
    So I replaced it to new one, then cleaned body inside and out.
    Nice boombox!!

    I have a BX-300. I fixed the idler tire problem by removing it , install
    a dental rubber band, then reinstall the old idler tire. I had a
    feeling it wasn't the surface of the rubber that was the problem, it was
    that the idler tire has shrunk over time so it can't make good
    contact/pressure on the wheel mechanism. It works. I tested with a
    3000Hz speed calibration tape, the result was 2970Hz which is
    acceptable.

    That's called an
    "Idler tire" used on the great Sankyo mechanism used on many great tapes, including the venerable Nakamichi.
    For Nakamichi classic mechanism the idler tire is larger, so be careful when you buy idler tires for your Nakamichi!

    Does your record button work? I just found this boombox at a thrift store and I find that I can't press my record button down :(
    Everything else works though so I'm not sure what the problem is. I haven't opened it up yet...

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check the tape itself for the write-protect tab is still there or not. Then check the cassette deck, there is a tiny knob switch that will be pushed away by the tab for the recording. Without pushing this switch away, you can not press the record button.

      Teddy Hashee I'm not sure where the knob/switch is. Maybe you could attach a picture?

      You see the black color plastic in the center of the pictures, that is stopping the record button, and when the cassette tape tab push back that switch, you can press the record button. You need to open up the body and need to check it. Maybe it could be cracked.

    Nakamichi? Why are you calling it that?

      I know who Nakamichi is, I have owned their products. But just because a generic replacement is the same size doesn't make it that brand of a part. Maybe you were trying to convey the idea that the part offered on eBay was usable?

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nakamichi tire is the name all I know when I need to replace it. If everyone is calling it Nakamichi, then I follow them. I have no idea why, but since Nakamichi made good quality of cassette deck, they might used or started to use this small tire. That's my guess.

    • @RuneTheFirst

      Not criticizing... I have been at this since the 70's and agree that finding parts can be a problem and you sometimes have to deal with people who have odd names and requirements..Most of these tires go back to the peak of the VCR days. PRB, a company out of Whitewater, MI made and sold millions of these. They are sorely missed. If you needed a rubber part they probably had it and in some cases would make it for you. They sold out to a NYC-based outfit, which is where the eBay venders get theirs. No more new products, unfortunately.
      But never despair, there are plenty of sources for tires and belts. Auto parts stores have rubber tires and o-rings, and sewing & vacuum cleaner shops are a goldmine for tires and heavier belts which will fit reel-to--reel recorders and movie projectors. Chinese sellers on Banggood, Amazon, and eBay are starting to sell rubber parts now too.
      You really poured some love into that boombox. Few would have but preserving the neglected is great. Someday these will be museum pieces and only you will have made that possible. I tip my hat to you (watch out for the clare where I used to have hair.)

      Hi, Ray. Thank you for the detail info. As you said finding the parts especially vintage item is totally difficult thing and I always wondered is there any good way to locate them. I think I need to do more homework to find out them. You seem like know many things when it coming to the restoration. Thank you!!
