This video was made before the DLC released, and man we got some very interesting environmental lore on the living jars. Maybe we can revisit the topic in the future. Thanks for watching everyone.
The first time I met this guy, I knew he would break my heart. Not because of him turning evil, but that he would want to prove himself beyond his normal limit. And I know it’s what he wanted in the end, but it doesn’t make it hurt any less.
First time I did his quest I shed a single tear of masculine respect. But now I do it all the time because he gives one of the best talismans in the game.
Why...why do they have to be such fools?! But...I mourn for great fallen spirits. They are foolish..but they were Great, no question about it. They had what defines a hero more than any other one.
Alexander be like, 'I am nothing but a crock! All it took was one hit and my innards went spilling' My brother in the greater will, you CARRIED the fight
One of my favorite moments of video game immersion was truly roleplaying my Tarnished on my first run through Elden Ring, deeply invested in Alexander's journey. It was gut wrenching to hear his resigned shame over being defeated with a single blow of Raddahn (no less!) despite being so braggadocios yet charmingly eloquent with his power and title before the festival. Yet, the reveal that he is fueled by the visceral essence of fallen warriors, churning and distilling it within his body, literally and symbolically tempering himself to be tougher, he won me over. All culminating in proving his worth as a fighter against the Fire Giant when summoned as an ally. I truly wished you could have given him the option of becoming your knight and champion after achieving Elden Lordship, but he is not bound by servitude, but the warrior path, which is always one of death in glory. But death all the same. He may have felt fear, but courageously overcame it, and accepted a shattering defeat, delighted to have journeyed further than any Jar has ever done. And even then, his legacy not only lives in the Tarnish's memories, but literally inside of his nephew Jarbin.
I agree, but early on he emphasizes parts of his voice a bit more than normal. What I love about this channel is his natural delivery and I felt he exaggerated it a tad too much in parts of this one.
I love him. You don't realize it at first, but Alexander's questline is like a microplay of the entire plot of Elden Ring, since Marika is just a vessel for The Elden Ring. It even ends with a god slain.
often, a vessel can be measured by its contents, but a warrior is made by the deeds, and the times and places it has done them in. Alexander is more than the sum of his volume, or his ceramic firmament, he is Iron Fist Alexander, every inch his choices, spirit, and wisdom. So live on, little Jar Bairn, and become the warrior the Lands Between needs again, now that Uncle Alexander has become the warrior they _had._
Was not expecting this. Excellent. Still very sad whenever I do his quest, only a homie as real as him helps me with the Fire Giant (BS boss). I use his shard with pride.
The beautiful thing about his character is that he has passion for something that he isn't really made for. He's so fragile as a pot but still pursuits the ways of a warrior to seek after those who hunt his family down jarburg (poachers). He even thinks about the player by making us a helmet along his journey. It's a story about passion and the fact you should do what you love no matter who or what you are. There is a warrior jar in all of us.
I think Alexander is our friend, but he is a Warrior Jar, and he sees you as his equivalent. One of you must take the other's boons for the road ahead, as two heros of lesser measure simply will not be enough. think he even shows friendship through the honor of his final encounter, he could have ambushed you or something but instead he sits at the end of a road and waits for you to accept the same conclusion he has.
I find it very interesting that Jars do not have the Undead attribute and weaknesses. If the Jars are naturally occurring by virtue of the Rune of Death's destruction/theft compelling them to live in death, how are they different?
My thought is that they are made by the golden order to convey the remains of people to the erdtrees so they can go back into the samsara cycle of the golden order. The life force of the people within are temporarily used to animate the jars. So probably not created by the deathroot's influence
I’m gonna be honest, the first interaction you have with him, I thought a normal person was trapped inside a jar lmao I was not expecting it to be a warrior jar.
Alexander being sad after the Radahn fight confused me during my first playthrough. He actually did most of the work for me XD. I understand there's a story being told besides what my gameplay shows me but I legit got hard carried and he said I was a better warrior.
It's actually kind of inspiring that, out of all the characters you meet, only 2 ever make it to the END endgame zones. Obviously, you have Millicent making it to the depths of the Haligtree, and then you have Alexander making it all the way to Farum Azula (Technically, Corryhn, Goldmask, Yura, and and Gideon all make it to AN endgame area but Gideon is a boss, and Goldmask and Corryhn stay in a relatively safe and out of the way spot, and Yura... well... he ain't Yura anymore). He was a LOT stronger than he gave himself credit for. In fact, he survives really well against the Fire Giant. He's able to soak a LOT of damage, so clearly, tempering himself on Mt. Gelmir and consuming warriors of the shattering worked really well.
Steve Harvey got a big belly laugh out of me 🤣 Also, how is this the first time I find out you can talk to Alex at Mt. Gelmir by standing on the rock?? My dumbass was right in the lava for the conversation 🤦
Iron Fist Alexander is hands down the best character in Elden Ring. There are more flashy folks, more intricate folks, there's Boc, and they're all great. But there's none that feel like a labour of love added because someone wanted to like Alexander.
i love the brief otogi shoutout at the start. it and its sequel were two of my all-time favorite games as a kid, i've always felt they've been unfairly forgotten.
Im a big sucker fir the onion knight characters. They were always my favorites. I was so saddened at first when I killed Alexander, but it was the end he wanted. Dying to a great warrior and passing his legacy onto his nephew. I wore the jar helmet he gave me, and the plumpest set of armor I could find and took up the mantel of Jar Knight to help anyone who would summon me.
A new video game peida video is always nice to see. What an amazingly written NPC, the heart of warrior who goes out laughing. From Software makes such memorable characters with arcs of their own... and this one is a lovable jar.
Iron Fist Alexander is another cherished NPC that gets addded to FROMSOFT's long list of endearing companions who's fates can end in some form of happiness or tragedy. Thanks for giving the lovable Jar Uncle the Ghostcharm treatment.
Rather than canopic jars its more than likely the Pair Dadeni (Cauldron of Rebirth) from welsh mythology. that has the ability to resurrect the the dead. It was destroyed by welsh anti-hero during with a battle with the irish. Seeing the irish use the cauldron to revive their warriors he hides amongst the dead and is thrown in, and destroys it from within, sacrificing himself. Its also what the black cauldron from the movie The Black Cauldron (and the books the movie is based on) is based on. It fits the celtic vibe as well.
Ghost you are a blast to watch. Your takes when it comes to games, lore, or even the smallest concepts are fantastic. I can’t wait to see what other masterclass your going to make next.
Alexander is my favorite npc in ER no contest. I've always really enjoyed the kind of aloof and goofy characters they've done in the series, with Siegward being my other favorite. He always reminded me of Winnie the Pooh, same w Alexander.
I brought Alexander in against the Fire Giant, and was left in awe as his big, fiery uppercut staggered the Fire Giant in his first phase. It made me gasp, took me back to watching Tarkus solo the Iron Golem. Also, there's a link between Alexander and the Jarwright puppet you can buy from Seluvis, though it's a bit sad if you look into it.
"strong enough, i deserve to have uncles insides" 💀💀💀💀 this sounds sooooooo wrong to me also i do believe alexander is our friend, he even asks permission at the end. instead of attacking without warning which could have been the deciding factor in him actually getting our insides inside of him
Encountering Iron Fist Alexander in Farum Azula, you know what's coming. As painful as it is to put an end to an absolute Lad and your mate, it would be more painful to deny him his dream. Blessed be IFA, a warrior to the end.
I find it weird that the small Jar is called Jarbin and the town Jarburg; but Alexander isnt called something like "Jarvis" or "Jarthur", or maybe "Alexanjar". But.. the sample size is too small to know if theres any actual jar naming conventions.
The great warrior Iron Fist Alexander. With blows mighty enough to topple a Giant, a body strong enough to resist the Starscourge, and the impeccable tenacity and wisdom to reach the fabled Farum Azula. A hero and a legend, let us give praise.
I had a theory about the Arteria Leaf being grown with the blood of nobles, and it kinda steamrolled into theories about the perfumers. Since Dominula is filled with women skinning and killing nobles, and Leyndell is a short walk away, it makes sense why the villages are absolutely covered with the leaves. You need Arteria Leaf to make exalted flesh, of which states it's rare in the badlands, likely due to nobles not venturing there too often. You also get a replenishable supply of them from the giants in Moutaintops, lending credence that the giants are closer to the erdtree than the golden order would like to admit. The word exalted is usually reserved for describing noblility, elite, poweful, or the holy; anything considered superior. This ties in why almost everyone in Leyndell is a misbegotten, a commoner, a soldier, a page, or a perfumer. There's no nobility left in Leyndell beyond the scorned misbegotten, and those who fought in the wars. I believe the perfumers killed many of the nobles, and fed them to the Miranda Flowers to harvest ingredients for perfumes to defend the erdtree. Miranda Flowers being explicitly carnivorous plants, and very poisonous, hence their ingredients being used in producing perfumes. Miranda Flowers being carnivorous is not unlike the Erdtree having its roots in every catacomb, and the minor Erdtrees having broken jars littered around them, sucking on warrior meat. It makes sense why they're considered holy. "You are what you eat," is a heavy theme in Elden Ring. The Miranda Flowers also spew out poison and pollinate(?) holy lights akin to how the Erdtree occassionally showers golden leaves which gives you a buff. Why I'm bringing that all up is that the jar fragments are used in perfumes as well, meaning that perfumes are potentiated with divine flesh, as well as the strong warriors' flesh in the lands between. That's where the depraved perfumers come in. Their set says they imbibe their perfumes, changing their body and mind. Since the Ironjar and Bloodboil aromatics, the two aromatics that are specifically made from Jar shards, and Arteria leaf respectively, relate to "changing body and mind," it makes it quite clear why they're depraved. They're essentially cannibals. Other perfumes are simply used like a weapon, but not ingested; talk about splitting hairs. The other ingredient in Bloodboil aromatics is a land octopus ovary, succinctly because land octopi eat humans. We also see a lot of perfumers taking care of and looking after misbegotten, which might mean they may be able to yield divine blood like Margit, Mohg, the crucible, and the giants. If they've run out of nobles for perfumes, then it makes sense to take the next best thing and breed misbegotten. The perfumers seem mainly interested in protecting the erdtree, so they must have some reason for caring about the misbegotten, since Margit is quite disdainful about his own accursed blood, and logically wouldn't be sympathetic to the misbegotten either. That is assuming he gives his subjects any orders whatsoever. All in all, the "poachers" are likely all perfumers, of which care very little about jar flesh being properly circulated through the erdtree. Whether the goal of the jars is to provide quality nutrients to the erdtree like the giant Miranda Flower it is, or to give the strong warriors a unique burial, they contain a vestige of the erdtree worth coveting.
It's so sick to finally see an "obscure" good videogames list that isnt just mentioning cult hits for once! Fantastic videos and now I have some games I need to look into
When it became apparent he was challenging me, I knew it was a foregone conclusion that our main character would be victorious. But his opening attack was the massive epic leap punch ground slam, and for a split second I was like, "😧 Oh shit I'm so screwed." RIP, legend.
Its true though 😂 In Titanic the relationship was "lol we banged" In ER the relationship to Alexander is a lot more nuanced; we saved him twice; we battled gods together; we met his nephew.. RIP jarbro
I believe Warrior Jars bring the remains of the dead, particularly those that died well in battle, back to the catacombs or the minor Erdtrees scattered around. They do this because of Erdtree burial.
Iron Heart Alexander is a true warrior who shall live forever in the annals of history! I am sad though that you have to kill him, although he wouldn't have it any other way I suppose. (also that note at the end is super cute)
damn ghost, you are truly an under rated content creator right now. if you keep posting like this it will make every one of us very happy fans! i cant get enough of these videos!!!!
alexander can never grow in power without external force to help himself, his body cannot be honed anymore then it is. Like, how do you train ceramic and stone muscle, that material can never grow using mortal training like what Alexander is doing.
Absolutely amazing video! At the end you mentioned Alexander maybe not being the subscribers first choice for characters but I think what sets you apart from others is how much passion you put into smaller stories or characters. Always go for a story you care about, the quality will reflect your passion. Thank you for making these videos!
Man, I knew it was something from Dark Souls, but I wish that I guessed it was going to be this legendary guy, it was going to be a matter of time. So glad to see Ghost back with another banger upload.
I just discovered your channel and you're absolutely dope!! I watch a lot of TH-cam while working and these videos made my day go by faster and interesting
I'd love to see Jarl Balgruff shown some love, but I'd also love to see Arthur Morgan paid tribute in your style of video. He's a complex character and you do a great job analyzing them.
You think he finally went down in Farum Azula, but we all know he still lives. Just with a different name and in a different place where help is very much needed. The Haligtree.
I keep falling for characters in games named Alexander... First FFXIV, then Elden Ring... It's a running theme... Alexander my beloved, you didn't deserve what happened to you...
He was my friend. A warrior to the end. But alas a warrior must fight alone. So we moved on alone. With naught but the memory of the iron fist to keep us going.
0:05 into the video and Demon Souls main menu got me already sad. I truly truly wish I could see the alternative world of what the evolution of Demon->Dark->????? would've been without the need to make money.
It is possible that the erdtree avatars create the jars as a means to repurpose the souls who are not reincarnated by the erdtree. Maybe it is some type of hell, where offenders against the golden order have their remains sealed inside for eternity.
Nice deep dive into the charnel crockery. Do you think the harvested souls are held in a kind of purgatory and denied Valhalla - endlessly fighting and dying? Or do they ascend if their remains happen to provide nourishment to the Ygdrassil seedlings?
I would assume the souls are released when the vessel is broken and the innards are returned to the minor erdtrees, the dead being in some sort of holding or stasis. Probably not very pleasant being stuck in one of them mfs. Though I guess it depends on who you're stuck in there with
Yet another amazing entry, Ghost! Loved it, especially since Alexander is my favorite NPC from Elden Ring right next to Sellen. I did think it was hilarious when you were talking to Jar Bairn at the end that one of the PC shades was killing him in the background, too, though it's completely unrelated!
Hey, all the guesses of Guts were at least very slightly in the right direction, with the Berserk influences on the Dark Souls games and subsequently Elden Ring (though Elden Ring is even more original).
This video was made before the DLC released, and man we got some very interesting environmental lore on the living jars. Maybe we can revisit the topic in the future. Thanks for watching everyone.

When it became apparent he was challenging me, I knew it was a foregone conclusion that our main character would be victorious. But his opening attack was the massive epic leap punch ground slam, and for a split second I was like, "😧 Oh shit I'm so screwed." RIP, legend.
Getting emotional over the ending of the jars quest at 2am? yes.
There is a metaphor for life in there somewhere.
The show must go on
Women: he didn't cry during titanic? Do men even have feelings?
Men battling a fictional sentient jar: 😭
Its true though 😂
In Titanic the relationship was "lol we banged"
In ER the relationship to Alexander is a lot more nuanced; we saved him twice; we battled gods together; we met his nephew.. RIP jarbro
I genuinely cannot think of a worse fate than being trapped as part of the consciousness of a jar person.
I haven't watched it yet but I just wanna say I really enjoy the videos. I just started watching your vids and their really good!
I believe Warrior Jars bring the remains of the dead, particularly those that died well in battle, back to the catacombs or the minor Erdtrees scattered around. They do this because of Erdtree burial.
It's definitely fitting to have him join you in the Giant fight the same as the fight against Yhorme
Iron Heart Alexander is a true warrior who shall live forever in the annals of history! I am sad though that you have to kill him, although he wouldn't have it any other way I suppose. (also that note at the end is super cute)
would consider doing Fia the Deathbed Companion and The Loathsome Dung eater with same exceptional in depth dive as this for Alexander ?
damn ghost, you are truly an under rated content creator right now. if you keep posting like this it will make every one of us very happy fans! i cant get enough of these videos!!!!
I think Hewg is probably my favorite character. Poor fella
I ruined Alex's dream by fighting Radahn solo
35:00, Yes, yes it was.
You know Ghostcharm definitely gets Maidens with this bangers he drops
alexander can never grow in power without external force to help himself, his body cannot be honed anymore then it is. Like, how do you train ceramic and stone muscle, that material can never grow using mortal training like what Alexander is doing.
Subliminal messages of crockpots are telling me to name mine Alexander.
Absolutely amazing video! At the end you mentioned Alexander maybe not being the subscribers first choice for characters but I think what sets you apart from others is how much passion you put into smaller stories or characters. Always go for a story you care about, the quality will reflect your passion. Thank you for making these videos!
"There is no serious items to gain from this characters"
*laughs in Alexander shard*
Great video good sir
I've beaten this game multiple times and I refuse to fight Alexander. In all of my completed games, he's still out there somewhere...
You’re videos are always so chill and radical. I appreciate how genuine you are. Keep up the great work
He was my friend. A warrior to the end. But alas a warrior must fight alone. So we moved on alone. With naught but the memory of the iron fist to keep us going.
He just wanted to be strong and heroic...Ahhh Alexander.
