I understand Dave's reaction but I know of parents who have been devastated by this, and no longer have much of a relationship with their son/daughter. often because their children no longer wish have them as a part of their lives. The vast majority of people in Monique's situation shrug, hope their kids figure it out at some point, and keep them in their will. This is pretty closed minded. Different people think and analyze situations differently. I am a pretty hard capitalist amd politically middle-right. My family however are ALL pretty hard left. They say and believe pretty wacky stuff sometimes. But it is good that these other viewpoints exist so they can be aalyzed and proven right or wrong. Yes, the American version of the Bible edits out the part in the story of the Rich Young Ruler (Mark 10:17ff) when he refuses to sell all he has and give it to the poor (that part is in the American version) and then Jesus tells His disciples to go and forcibly take all that he has and give it to the poor (that part isn't in the American version).
It's your call whether you want to include your kids in your will or not, but inheritance shouldn't be used as a tool to manipulate your children or to cast judgement. If you choose to include terms, in my opinion they should be clear, consistent, and reasonable, otherwise don't include them.

No one is entitled to an inheritance. On the flip side, Money with strings attached is not good money no matter who it’s coming from. Make your own money and don’t depend on or anticipate any kind of inheritance. That way if you do get one you get a pleasant surprise and if you don’t get one you’re content because you didn’t need one anyway and you lived your life the way you wanted to live it without someone dangling money over you.

I am a Christian libertarian. If you are an atheist, you can do what you want and not believe in God just like this woman can do what she wants with her money. Her kids don't need to follow her at all. Why should they care about their mother's money, whether they are poor or rich (which the daughters seem to be, especially the one percenter)? And love is indeed conditional despite what romantics want it to be and despite the preaching of Christians. It is grace that is unconditional.

That can make those like this woman’s children feel others should get handouts from the govt vis student loan forgiveness. I was blessed to have most of my college paid for and felt some guilt. But my parents broke down the cost and told me the max they would help and that encouraged me to be an ra to cover the rest. My parents also taught me stewardship of money from a young age. So when I continued my adult life i paid for things cash or didn’t buy it and I didn’t take out loans to go into debt.

Not passing wealth down to your kids because they are socialists is the most boomer thing I've ever heard of. Boomers had a lot of economic advantages that the younger generations do not have. I am a Christian libertarian. If you are an atheist, you can do what you want and not believe in God just like this woman can do what she wants with her money. Her kids don't need to follow her at all. Why should they care about their mother's money, whether they are poor or rich (which the daughters seem to be, especially the one percenter)? And love is indeed conditional despite what romantics want it to be and despite the preaching of Christians. It is grace that is unconditional.

I’m getting ready to do a trust and would really like to know. I absolutely don’t want to leave money/property to someone who is blowing it in life. Life has rewards, making sound decisions has rewards. Spinning off in a direction that doesn’t warrant rewards shouldn’t receive said rewards.

Sounds like to me its over a disagreement in politics which really shouldn't (morally) be a reason to exclude your kids from a will - as long as they are functioning, working members of their society. It's fine to have deep beliefs/an ideology, but to even have the caller state what the "line in the sand" was would have been really helpful to know. That can make those like this woman’s children feel others should get handouts from the govt vis student loan forgiveness. I was blessed to have most of my college paid for and felt some guilt. But my parents broke down the cost and told me the max they would help and that encouraged me to be an ra to cover the rest. My parents also taught me stewardship of money from a young age. So when I continued my adult life i paid for things cash or didn’t buy it and I didn’t take out loans to go into debt.
This was such a weird call. This lady barely gave an explanation of what her kids were doing and Dave's take was quite reductionist. I think John had a better and more nuanced answer that makes sense.
I wish Dave would have tried to get the lady to explain why she thinks that about her children. I'm guessing it's probably about healthcare and higher education.
