In 1995 I left my abusive marriage and moved to a city where no one knew me. I spent 6 years in a horrible custody battle. Hardest years of my life 😞 I listened to Amanda Marshall through those years. Her music soothed my Soul and eased my weary Heart! I wish I could afford her concert this summer in Winnipeg.
Either way I will still keep listening to her ! Her music is magic ❤ that she’s back!!

Amanda Marshall is such a good artist and her contribution to the 90's Canadian music scene is undeniable. It's unfortunate how "Birmingham" was the only song of hers to break onto the US charts. So awesome to see her again and creating new songs!! Great interview.

I found Amanda's music in a very unusual way: The US professional figure skater Rosalyn Sumners used "Beautiful Goodbye" for one of her most well-known professional programs back in the 90s, and I loved the song immediately and sought out the CD. So I also found her from a song that was not a single. I loved all of Amanda's albums and I'm so happy to see her finally back. I didn't know until today that she has a new album out so I am off to listen to that, and may have to buy the physical CD to go with the first three just for old times' sake 🙂

I first saw her open for Tom Cochrane in Saskatoon. I didn't know who she was till she sang "Birmingham" and realized I had heard the song on the radio. We were in the 4th row of the Centennial Auditorium and she came out and absolutely blew us away!! We heard this super powerful voice coming out of this tiny little woman and I instantly said to myself "This woman is a Star already, the rest of the world just doesn't know it yet!!" I bought the CD and played it to death! I have been wondering for the last 20 years what the hell happened to Amanda Marshall?? It is a shame she has not been able to share her amazing talent with the world all this time, but I am sure glad she is back recording and entertaining!! A beautiful Canadian Gem!! I have followed her career since when she was playing at the Horseshoe Tavern. Became immediately obsessed with her voice, her vibe! Her CDs are on repeat on weekends.
No one is allowed to speak (just sing) when her music comes on in the car.

You were one of my favourite singers in your heyday mostly because of your authenticity and sincere feelings about what you were (and are) singing. Same as the advice given you that "records are business and the stage is soul" you definitely are all SOUL. I am a romantic and I just loved when you would slow down and sit on a stool and sing "Marry me". And also, I have over the years reminded myself, especially in these difficult times, that "Everybody has a story that could break your heart..." Telling stories...You and Bon Jovi...Take care and welcome back...Oh by the way...I think you have a similarity to Rita Coolidge who was also one of my favourite singers. Ciao for now. Linda

First time I saw Amanda was at Grossmans in Toronto. I think she was 17? A small duo (Dave and Laura) featured her a couple of nights. Even then Amanda had such strength and confidence. Wow. She blew us all away. We knew she would go places. ❤

Saw her last week and she was fabulous! Maybe someone can get David Furnish to do his Canadian sister a service and have Elton mention her again !

What a delightful interview, Tom. Great questions and great answers. I saw Marshall twice in concert back in the early days of her career, and she's one of those people you've just _got_ to see live, because even though the record is good and she sounds good coming through your speakers, nothing prepares you for the stage presence and that _voice_ . The very first time I bought CDs, I picked up the debut albums of two Canadians. One was Diana Krall's (who'd already put out three albums by that time, I think), the other was Amanda Marshall's. Blown away by both. People remember _Dark Horse_ and _Birmingham_ , and l liked those, but I always loved _Beautiful Goodbye_ best from that first album. Anyway...
Thanks for this; I'm glad to see Marshall hasn't completely disappeared into the ether.

I knew of Amanda’s music, but can’t say I was a fan. Saw her last night for the first time. One of the best vocal performances I’ve ever heard, if not the best. If you get a chance to see her this year, you should.

I do remember hearing Dark horses for the first time. I was in my 20's and I couldn't get it out of my mind cause it's so good. I'm so happy that she's bringing new music out again. That's a really good talk with Amanda Tom. Good work. I really enjoyed it.
