Yeah, I’m really impressed with the uc1 and haven’t got it. My understanding on uc1 is there will be other versions of the channel strip available in the future such as a 4000. I’d really like to see softube implement the active open plugin fader jump
Great video, thanks. I would have been jumping on this setup, but then Avid updated their control App with the custom plugin mapping feature and now the S1 is a fantastic piece of hardware for controlling Pro Tools... So I'm on the fence now and waiting on SSL for providing an update on the 360 system, that could change my mind and choose their solution. UC1 has a much better aesthetic looking controller, BUT custom mapping plugins out over several S1's and/or Duck is amazing! 👍😄
The custom mapping is tempting and as long as you’re happy to sit down and map out the controls for your most used plugins this should be fine. I think coming from console one, the amount of time I save not having to map through controls and pages snd just have all channel controls in front of me regardless of the options selected in front of me has been a revelation, it’s second nature in a sense. The limitations around UC1 at the moment will be that it’s currently only supporting one channel strip at the moment which was the same for softube when I bought it. I am tempted to try hiring an s1/dock combo to do a comparison between the 2 units
@@JonConStudio the layout on the Control One is brilliant thought out and I would be happy, to get one if was better integrated in Pro Tools. The layout on the UC1 is even better, but needs to be able to control more, than just the two stock plugins. The few reports I've heard about the S1/Duck so far, is that people are pretty fast, to navigate the fewer knobs on the Dock, now that they have fully control over the placement. It's sooo easy to map the parameters and changing, and saving presets. It's only to clicks away. The knobs can have multiple functions, so one push on the screen right next to the knob, will give access to more control, like bypass or engage a sidechain filter. Program the most used functions to the 8 knobs, on the Dock and have the rest layed out on the S1, right next to the Dock. Hopefully it will make op, for not being as convenient as the Console One. The freedom to control all of your plugins and find a rutine that shoots your workflow the best. I suspect of course, that there will be room for improvement, in future updates. Not seen any real in depth reviews yet. I will also like to see, if it should be possible to integrate the UC1 with the S1 somehow. It looks like the S1 does the track follow thing, open the SSL Native strip shouldn't be a problem. Well I still prefer the aesthetics of the UF8. At some point, I will have to try them both. But we'll see about that. 😄
@@lydfar2392 I think I've had console one now for 7 years. I think Avid have no intention of opening up PT to third parties for the foreseeable as is their usual business plan to the level that would allow further integration and some of the issues on C1 appear in UC1 as well (automatic track numbering not available, fader touch selects the plugin). As it is, C1 is pretty well ingrained on my workflow and I'm used to it now, I think UC1 has managed to pick up on the one flaw most people will say C1 has and thats surrounding the lack of channel text identifiers. Honestly, I have been tempted to hire an S1 Dock Combo to compare it and see if I made the right choice. I'm looking to the future a little with the UF8, eventually I'd love to be in a position where I get a 3 bay mastering style desk and have the Uf8 plug in the furniture like the artist mixes. HA! The VS700 system was in a league of its own on the driver front, I really liked the controller for it as I was a Sonar user when it came out. I'm sure the VS700 system came out at a similar time to the nucleus didn't it? I remember considering both at one point but only wanted the controller and cake/roland wouldn't break their system up at the time so ruled it out (didn't need the converters). Dodged the bullet a little bit there. I switched to pro tools because Sonar was unstable to the point of being unusable on my system. Before the UF8 came out, the nucleus 1 was still popular as most people were using other sound cards and I just wanted the controller element of the board. The mic preamps were a bonus for nucleus users and can still be used today. The Nucleus 1 USB soundcard element was developed by a third party as I understand it and there was an issue around updates after a certain point which was then outside of SSL control. In nucleus 2, adopting the dante protocol should mean that it'll be supported for a much longer time period even after the Nuke stops getting updates from SSL but the MCU protocol is supported as is ipMIDI. Even now a 16 channel control surface which contains 2 standalone SSL preamps isn't a bad deal on the second hand market.

How are the colors on your UF8 purple when you're using it? I can't seem to find any color identifier on the controller that correlates to the channel selected. The colors of my soft keys don't change at all...
It depends on the mode you select on the UF8 and may be dependent on the DAW you use. There is a channel inspector view in pro tools that display the pan and send information across the rotary knobs and that happens when I select the channel option on the left of the UF8. What I’ve also found with using other DAWs is not all the function buttons light up so could be down to that reason. Just to be clear though, there. Isn’t an option to display the colour of the channel like you can on the S1

Hi Jon, Great video !! Tons of excellent info here. I have purchased the UF8 in high hopes that I could assign or program the faders to be dedicated. Have you tried turning on the “Auto select channel strip” option in plugin mixer settings (SSL 360)? It’s off by default. That works for me to have it change between channels as you touch fader/knobs. I’m using Logic. Not sure if it works in ProTools. Also, I have a UC1…I’m assuming that it’s not a UC1/SSL channel strip only thing.
Knowing pro tools, it probably won’t , it usually has the least options available compared to the other DAWS and this is down to avid and the feature requests from avid customers. I think it’s likely we’ll see ARA before updated Aax implementation for third party plugins and controllers AFAIK Console one does this too so it’s dependent on the information the plugin gets from the DAW (why some plugins can do automatic numbering and others can’t).
